Founded in 1961, it holds LBMA Good Delivery accreditation for gold and silver and LPPM accreditation for platinum and palladium. Its bars are accepted for settlement on major precious metals markets worldwide.

Valcambi is owned by Rajesh Exports, a Bengaluru-based Indian gold company listed on the Indian stock exchange. Rajesh Exports acquired 100% of Valcambi in 2015 for $400 million through its Singapore subsidiary REL Singapore Pte Ltd. The refinery continues to operate from Balerna with its own management team.
