About the 5 oz Perth Mint Kangaroo Gold Coin

Perth Mint's Flagship in a Large Gold Format

The 5 oz Perth Kangaroo gold coin extends the Australian Kangaroo series into large-format territory, containing 5 troy ounces (155.5 g) of .9999 fine gold. The Perth Mint introduced the 2 oz, 10 oz, and 1 kg sizes in 1991, with the 5 oz (face value AUD $500, later reduced to a proportional amount) fitting between the standard 1 oz and the institutional-grade 10 oz and kilogram coins.

Like all Kangaroo coins, the 5 oz version carries a reverse design that changes annually, each year featuring a new depiction of the red kangaroo against a stylised Australian landscape. The obverse shows the current monarch (King Charles III from 2024, preceded by various Queen Elizabeth II portraits). This annual design change is a feature the series shares with very few other sovereign bullion programmes, most notably the Chinese Panda.

The Perth Mint's micro-laser engraved authentication letter appears on each coin, detectable only under magnification. This was introduced as a security measure with the 2016 silver bullion release and has been applied across all Kangaroo bullion denominations since. It provides a verification method that, combined with the Perth Mint's "P" mintmark and precise weight and dimension tolerances, offers reasonable anti-counterfeiting protection, though the Mint does not offer a digital coin-level authentication system like the Royal Canadian Mint's Bullion DNA.

The Perth Mint is the sole bullion mint in Australia (the Royal Australian Mint in Canberra handles circulating currency) and has operated since 1899 as a government-owned entity of Western Australia. It holds LBMA accreditation, placing its products among the globally recognised standard for gold quality and provenance.

The 2026 edition marks the 40th anniversary of the Kangaroo series (launched as the "Australian Gold Nugget" in 1986), with gold coins carrying a special nugget privy mark that references the series' original identity. The Kangaroo name came into use from 1989 when the reverse design shifted from famous Australian gold nuggets to kangaroo motifs.

5 oz Gold Kangaroo Tax Treatment

Australia

Investment-grade gold bullion (99.5%+ purity) is GST-free in Australia. The Kangaroo exceeds this threshold at .9999. Capital gains tax applies on disposal, with individuals who hold for longer than 12 months qualifying for a 50% CGT discount.

United States

The gold Kangaroo is IRA-eligible, meeting the IRS Section 408(m) requirement for gold of .995+ purity. It must be held by an approved custodian. Sales tax varies by state; roughly 35 states exempt bullion purchases entirely. Capital gains are taxed at the collectibles rate of up to 28% for holdings exceeding one year.

United Kingdom

VAT-exempt as investment gold. Not CGT-exempt, as only UK legal tender coins (the Britannia and Sovereign) receive that benefit. Gains above the annual CGT allowance (GBP 3,000) are taxable at the individual's rate (18% basic, 24% higher).

Canada

Exempt from GST/HST as gold refined to 99.5%+ purity. Capital gains taxed at a 50% inclusion rate. Not eligible for RRSP or TFSA accounts.

Singapore and Hong Kong

In Singapore, the Kangaroo qualifies as an Investment Precious Metal (IPM) and is GST-exempt. Hong Kong levies no sales tax, import duty, or capital gains tax on gold bullion. Both jurisdictions are strong markets for Perth Mint products due to geographic proximity.

New Zealand

Fine gold bullion of 99.5%+ purity is GST-exempt. The Perth Mint is the nearest major sovereign mint for New Zealand buyers, making Kangaroo products a natural choice in this market.

5 oz Gold Kangaroo vs Competitors at This Weight

The Kangaroo's main rival at the 5 oz gold weight is the 5 oz gold Panda. Both series change their designs annually. The Kangaroo has the edge on purity (.9999 vs .999), consistent troy ounce weights (the post-2016 Panda's 150 g is 3.5% lighter than 5 troy ounces), and authentication features (micro-laser engraving vs no digital verification on the Panda). The Kangaroo also comes from a single identifiable mint, whereas the Panda is struck at multiple Chinese facilities without standardised mintmarks. For US buyers, the Kangaroo is IRA-eligible; the gold Panda generally is not.

The 5 oz Commander gold coin from Scottsdale Mint offers .9999 purity but is exclusively available through SD Bullion, limiting its secondary market reach. The Kangaroo benefits from the Perth Mint's government backing, LBMA accreditation, and availability through hundreds of dealers worldwide.

Against 5 oz Super Pit gold from the same Perth Mint, the Kangaroo has broader recognition and longer history. The Super Pit's appeal is thematic (mining heritage) and its mintage tends to be tighter, but for pure investment liquidity, the Kangaroo is the safer choice as the Perth Mint's flagship series.

For buyers comparing the 5 oz format against smaller denominations, the per-ounce premium on a 5 oz gold coin is typically lower than on 1 oz Kangaroo coins, but the total outlay is substantial. The 5 oz format appeals to buyers building a concentrated gold position who want fewer, larger coins with the liquidity benefits of a major sovereign mint programme.

5 oz Perth Mint Kangaroo Gold Coin: frequently asked questions

The 5oz Perth Kangaroo weighs 5 oz (155.52g) and is struck in 999.9 fine gold by Perth Mint in Western Australia. It is Australian legal tender with a face value set by the Australian government. The coin's reverse design changes annually, a feature shared with the Chinese Panda series.
The Perth Mint has changed the kangaroo reverse design on its gold bullion coins annually since 1989, when the series was redesigned from its original gold nugget theme. Each year's coin shows a different kangaroo pose with landscape elements. This annual design change gives each issue mild collectible appeal beyond its bullion value, and is one of few gold bullion series to do this alongside the Chinese Panda.
In Australia, investment-grade gold bullion is GST-free, and individuals who hold for more than 12 months qualify for a 50% CGT discount on any gain. In the UK, investment gold is VAT-free, but CGT applies at 18% to 24% on gains above the £3,000 annual allowance. US investors are taxed at up to 28% on gold coin gains. The coin is IRA-eligible in the US due to its .9999 purity.
