1/2 oz Johnson Matthey Silver Bar: frequently asked questions

No. Johnson Matthey exited retail silver bar production around 2015 after its refining business was sold to Asahi Holdings. The 1/2 oz bars sold today are secondary-market items, sourced from dealers who have acquired existing stock rather than new production. Buyers should bear this in mind when comparing premiums.
Johnson Matthey bars carry the JM logo, a weight and purity stamp (1/2 troy oz, .999 fine silver), and the Johnson Matthey name. Verify authenticity by checking the sharpness of the stamping and confirming the piece weighs 15.5518 g. Because these are secondary-market bars no longer in production, buying from a reputable dealer is the most reliable safeguard.
Each bar contains exactly one half troy ounce of fine silver: 1/2 oz (999 purity). The .999 fineness means the bar is 99.9% pure silver with only trace base-metal content. One half troy ounce is approximately 15.55 grams.
