About the Legendary Warriors Silver

Warrior-Themed Silver from MINT XXI and Niue

Legendary Warriors is a silver bullion series produced by MINT XXI (Mint 21) featuring full-figure portraits of historic warriors spanning cultures and millennia. The series exists in two distinct product formats: 1 oz 999 fine silver rounds with no legal tender status, and 2 oz 999 fine silver legal tender coins carrying a $5 NZD face value issued by Niue. This dual-format structure means buyers need to be clear about which version they are purchasing, as the tax and investment implications differ.

The warriors featured span an ambitious range of historical figures. Released designs include Spartacus, Joan of Arc, Genghis Khan, Geronimo, Julius Caesar, Achilles, Alexander the Great, and Eric Bloodaxe. Announced future releases include William Wallace, Sitting Bull, Leonidas I, Miyamoto Musashi (confirmed for 2025), Arminius, Attila the Hun, and Hannibal, bringing the planned series total to 15 warriors.

The 1 oz silver round is the most accessible format, trading at moderate premiums above generic rounds due to the detailed design work. These rounds measure 39 mm in diameter with a Brilliant Uncirculated finish. The legal tender coin versions from Niue feature antique finishing with selective gold plating and high-relief striking, positioned as premium collector pieces rather than pure bullion plays.

The series is primarily distributed through US dealers including GovMint, SilverTowne, and Pinehurst Coins, with some availability in Canada and Europe. The range of historical and cultural traditions represented (Greek, Roman, Norse, Mongol, French, Scottish, Native American, Germanic, Carthaginian, and Japanese) gives the series broad thematic appeal across collector interests.

Design Techniques

The legal tender versions use three advanced minting techniques: selective gilding (gold-coloured highlights on specific design elements), digital printing (colour details), and high-relief striking (raised 3D effect). The obverse of legal tender versions carries the portrait of King Charles III (or Queen Elizabeth II on earlier issues) with the Niue denomination. The 1 oz BU rounds have a simpler finish but share the same warrior portrait designs.

Tax Treatment Depends on the Format

The Legendary Warriors series has a split tax profile because the 1 oz rounds and the 2 oz coins have different legal statuses. Buyers should identify which format they hold.

1 oz Rounds (No Legal Tender)

As private-mint silver rounds, these receive standard non-sovereign bullion treatment. In the UK, they face 20% VAT on purchase and are subject to CGT on disposal. They are not IRA-eligible in the US (no sovereign legal tender status). In Canada, they qualify for GST/HST exemption at 99.9%+ purity. In Australia and New Zealand, the 999 purity meets the 99.9% threshold for GST exemption.

2 oz Coins ($5 NZD Legal Tender)

These carry Niue legal tender status, which changes their tax profile in several jurisdictions. In the US, they may qualify for IRA inclusion as foreign government-issued legal tender coins meeting 999 purity requirements, but Niue-issued coins are not commonly listed on standard IRA-eligible product lists, so custodian acceptance should be confirmed. In the UK, silver coins are subject to 20% VAT regardless of legal tender status (only UK legal tender coins are CGT-exempt). In New Zealand, as NZD legal tender at 99.9%+ purity, the coins should be GST-exempt.

Both Formats

Because the coins trade at premiums well above both face value and spot price, capital gains treatment depends on whether the jurisdiction views them as investment or collectible items. In the UK, they face CGT at 18-24%. In the US, silver is taxed as a collectible at up to 28% long-term. In Canada, the 50% capital gains inclusion rate applies. Hong Kong and Singapore have no capital gains tax; Singapore's IPM scheme may cover the legal tender versions.

Legendary Warriors vs Other Themed Silver Series

The closest competitor is the Warriors of History series, a 2016 Royal Canadian Mint collection also issued on behalf of Niue. That series featured 1 oz 999 silver coins with a $2 NZD face value, including Viking warriors, at a mintage of 5,000 per design. The Legendary Warriors series differentiates with its broader cultural scope (15 warriors across a dozen civilisations versus a single-culture focus), dual-format offering (BU rounds plus legal tender coins), and more advanced minting techniques (high relief, selective gilding).

Against Perth Mint's Gods of Olympus series, which features Greek mythological figures on silver coins, the Legendary Warriors takes a historical rather than mythological approach. Perth Mint carries stronger global brand recognition and established resale channels, while the Legendary Warriors' appeal is in the design detail and the breadth of its warrior roster.

For buyers looking at warrior-themed silver purely as bullion, the 1 oz BU rounds compete with other premium generic rounds. The Incuse Indian from Golden State Mint trades at similar premiums and offers a distinctive incuse format. The GSM Morgan round provides the most iconic American numismatic design at comparable pricing. Both lack legal tender status, same as the Legendary Warriors rounds.

For buyers who want themed silver with legal tender backing and established resale liquidity, the Royal Mint Myths and Legends series offers UK CGT exemption and 999.9 fine silver, with Robin Hood, King Arthur, and Beowulf story arcs. The Myths and Legends coins carry higher premiums and focus specifically on British folklore rather than the global warrior roster, but the Royal Mint brand provides stronger resale confidence than a MINT XXI product. The Tudor Beasts, also from the Royal Mint, offers another CGT-exempt themed alternative for UK buyers.
