About the Scottsdale Stacker Silver

Interlocking Bullion from Arizona

The Scottsdale Stacker series is the only major silver bullion line where the physical interlocking mechanism is the core product feature. Most "stackable" bars on the market are simply flat rectangles that sit on top of each other. Scottsdale's bars have precision-engineered beveled edges: the top of each bar has a raised bevel that nests into a recessed channel on the bottom of the next bar, creating stable, space-efficient stacks for vault or safe storage. The concept is simple, but no other major producer has replicated it at scale.

Produced by Scottsdale Mint, a private mint founded in 2008 in Scottsdale, Arizona, the Stacker line spans two product families. Rectangular bars come in 10 oz, 20 oz, 1 kg, and 100 oz sizes. The Lion Stacker Rounds come in 1 oz, 2 oz, 5 oz, and 100g sizes, all sharing the same 38.8mm diameter so they interlock across denominations within a single stack. Bars and rounds use different interlocking mechanisms and do not interlock with each other.

All silver Stackers are 99.9% fine. Scottsdale also produces gold Stacker bars at 99.99% fine in sizes from 1 oz to 20 oz. The mint holds ISO 9001:2015 certification and manufactures everything on-site in Arizona using CNC minting equipment, producing to order from raw materials rather than maintaining finished inventory.

The Lion Stacker rounds all share the same 38.8mm diameter, with only thickness varying by weight. This allows 1 oz, 2 oz, 5 oz, and 100g rounds to interlock within a single stack, which is unusual for bullion products across different denominations. An Eagle Stacker variant exists in the 5 oz size, featuring an eagle design instead of the lion.

Security Features

Bars carry unique serial numbers stamped on each piece. The reverse of bars features a distinctive anti-forgery swirl pattern, CNC-machined with a pattern unique to each piece. Some products ship with Certi-Lock tamper-evident assay cards featuring mobile verification. Rounds rely on the precision machining and the interlocking design itself as authentication features. The series does not use holographic or decoder-lens technology like Sunshine Mint's MintMark SI system.

Tax Treatment for Scottsdale Stacker Products

Scottsdale Stackers are private mint products with no legal tender status and no face value. This classification affects their tax treatment in several jurisdictions.

  • United States: Silver bars and rounds at 99.9% purity are IRA-eligible for self-directed precious metals IRAs. Sales tax varies by state, with most states exempting investment-grade bullion. Scottsdale's home state of Arizona exempts precious metals from sales tax. Federal capital gains are taxed at the collectibles rate of up to 28%.
  • United Kingdom: Silver bars and rounds are subject to 20% VAT on import. No CGT exemption is available for bars or rounds, as they are not legal tender. Gold Stacker bars at 99.99% purity are VAT-exempt under the UK's investment gold exemption.
  • Canada: Silver bars and rounds at 99.9% purity are generally GST/HST-exempt as investment precious metals under the Excise Tax Act.
  • Australia: Silver at 99.9% purity from recognised producers qualifies as investment-grade and is GST-free. Gold bars at 99.99% purity are also GST-free.
  • European Union: Silver bars and rounds are subject to local VAT rates (typically 19-27%). Gold bars at 99.5% purity or above are VAT-exempt under the EU Investment Gold Directive.
  • Singapore: Silver bars at 99.9% purity from qualifying producers can be classified as Investment Precious Metals (IPM) and exempt from the 9% GST. No capital gains tax.
  • Hong Kong: No sales tax, no import duty, no capital gains tax.

Stacker vs Sunshine Mint, RCM, and Generic Bars

The Scottsdale Stacker occupies a specific niche: branded private-mint silver with a functional design feature that generic bars lack. This positioning places it between commodity-priced generic silver and premium sovereign-mint products.

Against Sunshine Mint bars, the comparison centres on authentication. Sunshine uses its proprietary MintMark SI anti-counterfeiting system, visible only through a special decoder lens, which provides a more sophisticated security approach than Scottsdale's serial numbers and swirl patterns. Sunshine bars are generally available at lower premiums. The Stacker's advantage is the interlocking design and the distinctive Scottsdale Lion branding, both of which provide practical value that plain Sunshine bars do not.

Royal Canadian Mint silver bars are 99.99% fine (four nines compared to Scottsdale's three nines), carry government backing from the Canadian Crown, and feature serrated edges with serial numbers. RCM bars command higher premiums due to their sovereign-mint status and broader international recognition. They do not have an interlocking stacking feature. For investors who prioritise government backing and maximum purity, RCM bars are the stronger choice. For those who value the physical stacking mechanism and are comfortable with a private mint product, Scottsdale offers a unique proposition.

Generic silver bars from producers like Asahi, Republic Metals, and others trade closer to spot with minimal brand premium. The Scottsdale Stacker carries a clear brand premium over these generics, justified by the interlocking design, the lion hallmark's recognition, and the serial number traceability. Investors focused purely on metal accumulation at the lowest cost will do better with generics. Investors who value organised, secure storage and brand recognition at resale may find the Stacker premium worthwhile.

The 10 oz Scottsdale Stacker bar is the most popular size in the range and serves as the flagship product. The 100 oz King Stacker, at approximately 3.11 kg, is the largest and offers the lowest per-ounce premium. For investors building a significant silver position, the kilo and 100 oz sizes combine Scottsdale's interlocking storage advantage with premium efficiency that approaches commodity bar pricing.
