About 5g Gold Bars
5g Gold Bars
A 5g gold bar contains 0.161 troy ounces of gold, placing it firmly in the small-bar category where premiums are high and the target buyer is someone entering the gold market at a low price point. At approximately $500-$550 (based on current gold prices), a 5g bar costs roughly the same as a 1/10oz gold coin. Both formats serve the same buyer: someone who wants physical gold ownership at the most accessible outlay.
The premium economics at 5g are unfavourable compared to larger bars. Premiums of 8-12% over spot are typical, driven by the fixed costs of manufacturing, assaying, packaging, and sealing a tamper-evident assay card. Those costs represent a substantial percentage of the bar's metal value. Moving up to a 10g gold bar provides a modest improvement; stepping up to a 50g gold bar drops premiums significantly (typically 3-6% over spot); and a 1oz gold bar (31.1g) sits in the 3-5% range. The premium difference between 5g and 50g is meaningful enough that buyers who can afford the larger bar will get substantially more gold for their money on a per-gram basis.
That said, 5g bars have a specific role. In European markets, particularly Germany, Switzerland, and Austria, metric gram bars are the natural unit of purchase. A 5g bar is a common entry-level size in these markets. In the Middle East and South Asia, 5g bars are popular for gifts and small savings, sold through banks and jewellers as well as bullion dealers. In the UK and US, 5g is less popular than the equivalent fractional ounce coins (1/10oz Britannia, Eagle, or Maple Leaf), because troy-ounce products dominate retail bullion and carry stronger brand recognition.
All major LBMA-accredited refineries produce 5g minted gold bars: PAMP Suisse, Valcambi, Argor-Heraeus, Heraeus, Perth Mint, and Metalor. The bars are universally sealed in credit-card-sized assay cards with certificates of authenticity, serial numbers, and the refinery's hallmark. Storage is compact: multiple 5g bars stack flat and take up very little space.
Premium Structure for 5g Gold Bars
At the 5g weight, premiums are primarily determined by the fixed costs that do not scale with bar size. Every bar, regardless of weight, requires the same assay process, the same serialisation, the same tamper-evident packaging, and the same dealer handling. When the underlying metal is worth $500, those fixed costs represent 8-12% of the value. When the metal is worth $5,000 (as in a 50g bar), the same fixed costs represent a much smaller fraction.
Among the major LBMA-accredited bars at 5g, the 5g PAMP Suisse Fortuna typically commands the highest premium, consistent with PAMP's position across all sizes. The 5g Valcambi bar and the 5g Metalor bar are generally at the competitive end. The difference between the cheapest and most expensive LBMA bar at 5g can be a full 2-4 percentage points, which in absolute terms is $10-$20 on a $500 purchase.
Compared to the alternative at a similar price point, a 1/10oz gold coin from a sovereign mint (approximately $500-$550) generally carries premiums of 5-10% over spot. The coin offers better liquidity and brand recognition in markets like the UK and US. The 5g bar may carry a slightly lower percentage premium than a comparable fractional coin, but the difference is narrow enough that the choice often comes down to preference for coins versus bars rather than pure cost analysis.
Resale is where the premium picture becomes important. The high acquisition premium on 5g bars is not fully recoverable. Dealers buy back small bars at tighter margins than large ones, meaning the effective cost of the round trip (buy and sell) is higher per gram than for larger formats. Buyers who intend to hold long-term may be less concerned; buyers who may need to liquidate within a few years should consider whether the premium penalty at 5g makes a larger bar a better choice.
Major 5g Gold Bars
The 5g gold bar market is served by every major LBMA-accredited refinery. All produce minted bars at 999.9 fineness, sealed in individual assay cards.
The 5g PAMP Suisse Fortuna is the most recognised product at this weight. The Lady Fortuna design, introduced in 1979, was the first decorative motif placed on a precious metals bar. Each bar is enrolled in PAMP's VeriScan digital authentication system and sealed in CertiPAMP packaging. Dimensions are approximately 13.1 x 22.1 x 0.9mm. The Fortuna's brand premium is highest at small sizes, where it represents a larger percentage of the metal value.
The 5g Argor-Heraeus bar features kinebar holographic security technology, providing a visual authentication check embedded in the bar itself. Argor-Heraeus is a Swiss refinery founded in 1951 in Mendrisio, now a subsidiary of the Heraeus Group. The kinebar hologram is one of the longest-established security features in the bar market.
The 5g Valcambi bar comes from the world's largest precious metals refinery by volume (over 2,000 tonnes annually). Valcambi bars carry a clean, minimalist design and typically trade at competitive premiums. The refinery is based in Balerna, Switzerland.
The 5g Perth Mint bar is the only government-backed option at this weight. Owned by the Western Australian government, Perth Mint bars feature a kangaroo design and CertiCard packaging with a security hologram. Government-mint provenance distinguishes it from the private Swiss refineries.
The 5g Heraeus bar is from Germany's largest precious metals refiner, founded in 1851. Heraeus bars are widely available in the German-speaking European market and trade at competitive premiums. The 5g Metalor bar comes from the Swiss refinery that was the first to be admitted to the London Good Delivery List in 1934. All six bars contain the same gold at the same purity; the differences are in security features, brand recognition, and premium.
Liquidity, Resale, and Storage at 5g
5g gold bars from LBMA-accredited refiners in sealed assay cards are liquid. Any reputable bullion dealer will buy them back. The question is not whether they can be sold, but at what spread. The buy-sell spread on 5g bars is wider than on larger formats because the dealer's fixed handling cost is the same regardless of bar size. A dealer who pays 2% below spot for a 1oz bar might pay 3-5% below spot for a 5g bar. That wider spread, combined with the higher acquisition premium, means the total round-trip cost is significantly higher per gram than for larger bars.
Branded bars from PAMP, Valcambi, and Argor-Heraeus in sealed packaging consistently achieve the best buyback prices. Bars from less recognisable refiners, or bars with broken seals, face additional discount. Keeping the assay card intact is important: a 5g bar removed from its packaging may require re-assaying before a dealer will offer a fair price, and the re-assay cost can be a meaningful fraction of the bar's total value.
Storage is one area where 5g bars genuinely excel. Each bar in its assay card is roughly credit-card-sized, making it compact and easy to store. Multiple 5g bars stack flat and take up very little space in a safe or safety deposit box. The low weight and small size also make 5g bars highly portable.
For buyers using 5g bars as a starting point, the most cost-efficient progression is to accumulate towards larger sizes over time. A single 50g gold bar holds the same gold as ten 5g bars but costs less in total due to the premium difference. Buyers who plan to build a substantial gold position will pay meaningfully less per gram by buying fewer, larger bars rather than many small ones.
5g Gold Bars: frequently asked questions
-
The raw metal value of a 5g gold bar is $4,193.50 per troy ounce multiplied by 5g. Dealer prices will be higher than this because they include a per-item premium; the listings on this page show current offers from multiple suppliers.
-
The costs of minting, assay certification, packaging, and handling are largely fixed per bar regardless of size. Spread across just 5 grams of gold, those fixed costs push the premium per gram much higher than on a 100g or 1oz bar. Buying larger bars is more cost-efficient if capital allows.
-
Yes. Bars from LBMA-accredited refiners (PAMP Suisse, Valcambi, ABC Bullion, and similar) typically carry a tighter resale spread because dealers and buyers recognise them without question. Bars from smaller or less well-known refiners may sit at a higher initial premium or prove harder to sell at fair value.
-
A 5g gold bar is a small, thin piece roughly the size of a thumbnail. Most come sealed in a tamper-evident assay card printed with the bar's weight, purity, and a unique serial number. Check that the packaging is intact, the hallmarks match the stated refiner, and the card has not been opened or reprinted.
