About the 10 oz ABC Cast Bar Silver Bar

Australia's LBMA-Accredited Cast Silver Bar

The 10 oz ABC Refinery Cast Bar is a poured silver bar from Australia's only independent LBMA-accredited refinery. ABC Refinery has operated since 1978 and is part of the Pallion group, Australia's largest independent precious metals services company with origins tracing to the 1950s. The refinery holds accreditations from the LBMA, COMEX, and the Shanghai Gold Exchange, placing it among the most internationally credentialled refineries in the Southern Hemisphere.

Cast bars are produced by pouring molten silver into a mould, giving each bar a slightly rough, organic appearance. No two cast bars are identical: surface textures, cooling marks, and stamp placement vary from piece to piece. This contrasts with minted bars, which are cut from rolled sheet and stamped with a die for a uniform, polished finish. Cast bars typically carry slightly lower premiums than minted bars of the same weight, reflecting the simpler production process.

The 10 oz weight class is widely considered the best balance of premium savings and liquidity in the silver bar market. Per-ounce premiums at 10 oz are significantly lower than on 1 oz bars (typically 3-6% versus 5-15% for 1 oz), while the bar remains easy to handle, store, and resell. Every major bullion dealer buys and sells 10 oz bars readily.

The bar contains 10 troy ounces (311.035 grams) of silver at a minimum purity of .999 fine, with most ABC silver bars testing at .9995 fine. Each bar is stamped with the ABC Bullion swan logo hallmark, weight, and purity designation. Serialised bars carry individual serial numbers for traceability. The refinery's labs hold NATA (National Association of Testing Authorities) and ISO accreditation for assaying, meaning purity stamps are independently verified.

Tax Treatment for the 10 oz ABC Cast Silver Bar

ABC Refinery bars are not legal tender. They carry no face value and are taxed as investment silver or precious metals bars.

Australia

ABC Refinery's primary market. Investment-grade silver bars at 99.9%+ purity are GST-free on first supply after refining, and input-taxed on subsequent supplies. ABC Refinery explicitly markets its cast bars as GST-exempt for Australian investors. The bar must be in "investment form" (bars, ingots, or coins in the form and character of the metal only, carrying a mark guaranteeing fineness). Capital gains on disposal are assessable income. A 50% CGT discount applies for individuals holding longer than 12 months. Australia has no equivalent of the UK's legal-tender CGT exemption.

United Kingdom

Silver bars carry 20% VAT on purchase. Bars have no CGT exemption regardless of manufacturer or LBMA accreditation. Capital gains tax applies at the individual's rate. ABC Refinery bars are available through UK dealers but are less common than Swiss-branded alternatives.

United States

Silver bars at .999 purity from LBMA-accredited refiners generally qualify for IRA inclusion via approved custodians. ABC Refinery's LBMA accreditation and .999+ purity satisfy the requirements. Capital gains are taxed at the collectibles rate of up to 28%. Sales tax varies by state.

Singapore and Hong Kong

Singapore exempts investment precious metals (silver at 99.9%+ from LBMA-accredited refiners) from GST. ABC Bullion has a Singapore presence. Hong Kong has no sales tax, import duty, or capital gains tax. The tael-weight variant (37.5g) of ABC's gold bars specifically targets the Hong Kong and Chinese markets.

Canada and New Zealand

Canada exempts silver at 99.9%+ purity from GST/HST. New Zealand exempts fine silver at 99.9%+ from GST. Both countries recognise LBMA-accredited refinery bars for exemption.

ABC Cast Bar vs Other 10 oz Silver Bars

The ABC Cast Bar competes in the 10 oz silver bar market, where the primary considerations are brand recognition, premium level, and resale liquidity.

In the Australian market, the most direct comparison is with Perth Mint silver bars. Perth Mint is government-owned (Government of Western Australia) and has held LBMA accreditation since 1957 for gold. Perth Mint has greater international brand recognition, particularly in Asian and European markets. ABC Refinery's advantage is its independence and a strong domestic dealer network through ABC Bullion's retail stores in Sydney, Melbourne, and Brisbane. Both produce .999+ fine silver at similar premiums for the Australian market.

Internationally, PAMP Suisse and Valcambi from Switzerland dominate the branded silver bar segment. PAMP Fortuna bars carry higher premiums due to the Lady Fortuna design and VeriScan authentication. Valcambi bars are more price-competitive. Both Swiss refineries have broader global distribution than ABC. For buyers outside Australia, Swiss-branded bars may be easier to resell due to familiarity, though ABC's LBMA accreditation ensures acceptance by any dealer who trades in LBMA-credited products.

Compared to American private mint products such as Sunshine Minting and SilverTowne, the ABC Cast Bar carries a different market positioning. American bars dominate the North American market; ABC bars are strongest in the Australian, Asian, and increasingly the Singapore markets. The ABC cast bar's organic, hand-poured aesthetic is shared with SilverTowne's cast products, though the designs and brand heritage differ.

The key selling point of the ABC 10 oz Cast Bar is its combination of LBMA accreditation, Australian origin (appealing to domestic buyers and the Asia-Pacific market), and the lower premium inherent to cast production. For Australian investors, the domestic supply chain means no import costs and straightforward GST-free purchasing.

10 oz ABC Cast Bar Silver Bar: frequently asked questions

The cheapest 10oz ABC Cast Bar is currently A$1,040.00 from Bradford Coins, based on the A$93.63 silver spot price. The bar contains 10 troy ounces of 999.5 fine silver. Use the comparison table above to see all available dealers and their current prices side by side.
A cast bar is made by pouring molten silver into a mould and allowing it to cool. The result has a slightly rough, organic surface where each bar is unique. A minted bar is cut from a rolled sheet and stamped with a die, giving a uniform finish and sharper detail. Cast bars typically carry a lower premium per ounce than minted bars because the production process is simpler and less equipment-intensive.
The 10oz ABC Cast Bar currently trades at around 11.8% over the A$93.63 silver spot price. Cast bars tend to carry lower premiums than minted bars of the same weight because pouring molten metal into a mould requires less tooling and finishing than die-striking. The 10 oz size also benefits from economies of scale compared to smaller retail bars.
Every ABC cast bar carries the ABC Bullion hallmark stamp along with its stated weight and purity. Most retail-size bars include a unique serial number. Check the weight (311.03 g for a 10 oz bar) and dimensions against specification. Silver is not magnetic, so a magnet test rules out steel counterfeits quickly. For further assurance, an ultrasonic gauge or acid test will confirm the silver content without damaging the bar.
