About the 10 oz Magnificent Maples Silver Coin

The RCM's Large-Format Maple Leaf Silver Coin

The 10 oz Magnificent Maples is the Royal Canadian Mint's primary entry in the large-format silver bullion coin market. Introduced in 2017 as the RCM's first 10 oz silver bullion coin, it carries a $50 CAD face value, .9999 fine purity, and the full suite of RCM security technologies: radial lines, micro-engraved laser maple leaf privy mark, and Bullion DNA anti-counterfeiting verification.

The reverse design by Canadian nature artist Celia Godkin features two sugar maple leaves (Acer saccharum) attached by their stems in a naturalistic falling-leaf pose, distinguishing it from the single-leaf design on the standard 1 oz Silver Maple Leaf. This dual-leaf design has remained consistent across years; only the date and privy mark change. The series has since expanded to include a 5 oz "Grand Maple Leaf" variant (introduced in 2025 through an exclusive distribution partnership with SD Bullion) and a 1 oz version, establishing a family of large-format Maple Leaf silver products.

Four-nines purity in a 10 oz silver coin is unusual even among sovereign mints. Most competitors produce at .999. The RCM's refining capability, developed across decades of Maple Leaf production, allows it to achieve .9999 purity at scale without a prohibitive cost premium. This positions the Magnificent Maples above peers like the 10 oz Britannia (.999) and 10 oz Noah's Ark (.999) on a pure specifications basis.

The open mintage (no fixed annual production cap) keeps premiums competitive, struck to demand rather than artificial scarcity. Monster boxes hold 24 coins, and the 76.25 mm diameter makes the coin a substantial display piece with a presence that 1 oz coins cannot match.

The obverse initially carried Susanna Blunt's 2003 portrait of Queen Elizabeth II, the first uncrowned effigy used during her reign. From 2024, this was updated to Steven Rosati's portrait of King Charles III. The 5 oz Grand Maple Leaf variant introduced in 2025 uses a Red Maple Leaf reverse by Nathalie Lagace rather than the Celia Godkin sugar maple design, creating a visual distinction within the family.

Tax Position for the 10 oz Magnificent Maples

Canada

As an RCM product at .9999 purity, the Magnificent Maples is exempt from GST/HST under the Excise Tax Act. Precious metals refined to 99.9% purity or higher in bar, ingot, coin, or wafer form qualify for this exemption. Capital gains on disposal are taxed at a 50% inclusion rate. Physical bullion is not eligible for RRSPs or TFSAs in Canada; only mining stocks and precious metals ETFs qualify for these registered accounts.

United States

The Magnificent Maples is IRA-eligible. Its .9999 purity exceeds the IRS Section 408(m) minimum of 99.9% for silver. The coin must be held by an approved custodian in an IRS-approved depository; home storage is not permitted. Sales tax varies by state, with approximately 35 states exempting investment bullion. Capital gains are taxed at the collectibles rate of up to 28%.

United Kingdom

Silver bullion carries 20% VAT in the UK, and the Magnificent Maples is not exempt from this. The coin is not CGT-exempt because only UK legal tender coins qualify for Capital Gains Tax exemption. UK buyers seeking CGT-free silver should consider the 10 oz Silver Britannia. The 20% VAT on purchase plus CGT liability on gains creates a significant cost drag for UK-based buyers compared to domestic Royal Mint silver.

Australia and New Zealand

In Australia, the coin is GST-free as investment-grade silver at .9999 purity from a recognised government mint. Capital gains apply with a 50% discount for holdings over 12 months. In New Zealand, silver at 99.9% purity or above is GST-exempt, and there is no formal capital gains tax.

Other Jurisdictions

  • Singapore: GST-exempt as an Investment Precious Metal (legal tender silver at 99.9%+ purity).
  • Hong Kong: No sales tax, import duty, or capital gains tax.
  • EU: Gold Maple Leafs are VAT-exempt under the investment gold directive. Silver coins are subject to local VAT, with margin scheme treatment potentially available in Germany, Netherlands, and other member states for legal tender coins.

Magnificent Maples vs Other 10 oz Silver Coins

The Magnificent Maples' competitive position centres on its .9999 purity, Bullion DNA security, and the Royal Canadian Mint's established global reputation. It is one of the few 10 oz silver coins that combines the highest available purity standard with institutional-grade authentication technology.

vs 10 oz Britannia (Royal Mint)

The 10 oz Britannia carries .999 purity (slightly lower than the Magnificent Maples' .9999) but offers CGT exemption for UK buyers, annually changing reverse designs, and four visual security features from 2021 onward. For UK residents, the Britannia's tax advantage is decisive. For Canadian and US buyers, the Magnificent Maples' higher purity, Bullion DNA, and domestic availability make it the stronger choice.

vs 10 oz Kookaburra (Perth Mint)

The 10 oz Kookaburra matches the .9999 purity and adds annual design changes that create collector demand and secondary market price support. The Magnificent Maples uses a fixed design, prioritising bullion consistency over collectibility. The Kookaburra has a larger collector following built over decades (silver Kookaburra since 1990), while the Magnificent Maples (since 2017) is newer but benefits from the Maple Leaf brand's global recognition.

vs 10 oz Maple Leaf (RCM)

The 10 oz Maple Leaf is a sibling product from the same mint at the same .9999 purity. The Maple Leaf uses the classic single-leaf design; the Magnificent Maples uses the dual sugar maple leaf design. Both carry the same legal tender status, security features, and tax treatment. The choice between them is purely aesthetic and availability-driven. The Magnificent Maples was purpose-designed for the 10 oz format, while the Maple Leaf extends the standard design to a larger coin.

vs 10 oz Armenian Noah's Ark

The 10 oz Noah's Ark typically carries lower premiums and benefits from margin scheme VAT treatment in the UK and EU as a legal tender coin. Its .999 purity is lower than the Magnificent Maples' .9999, and it lacks comparable anti-counterfeiting technology (no equivalent to Bullion DNA). The Noah's Ark is the value choice in European markets; the Magnificent Maples is the quality choice with superior specifications.

10 oz Magnificent Maples Silver Coin: frequently asked questions

The cheapest 10oz Magnificent Maples silver coin we track is CA$996.07 from BullionMart, currently around 7.1% over spot. Because each coin contains 10 troy ounces of .9999 fine silver, the price tracks closely with silver spot movements.
The Magnificent Maples was introduced in 2017 as the Royal Canadian Mint's first 10 oz silver bullion coin. It carries a $50 CAD face value and is struck in .9999 fine silver (four nines purity). The reverse, designed by Canadian wildlife artist Celia Godkin, features two sugar maple leaves in a naturalistic falling pose, distinguishing it from the single-leaf 1 oz Silver Maple Leaf. The series has an open mintage and is struck to meet annual demand.
Royal Canadian Mint Magnificent Maples coins carry several security features. The primary one is Bullion DNA technology, an electronic authentication system used by the Mint and authorised dealers that verifies each coin against a registered digital record. Coins also feature a micro-engraved laser maple leaf privy mark near the reverse stem, visible only under magnification, containing the last two digits of the year. Precise radial lines in the coin field provide an additional layer that is difficult to replicate.
2 dealers currently list the 10oz Magnificent Maples, with 2 listings tracked. Availability was last updated recently. The coin's open mintage and distribution through major dealers in North America and Europe means supply is generally consistent, though stock can thin during periods of high silver demand.
