About the 1 oz Sunshine Eagle Silver Round

The Sunshine Minting 1 oz Silver Round

The Sunshine Minting silver round is the only generic round on the market with a built-in anti-counterfeiting verification system. The MintMark SI (Scrambled Indicia) feature, a micro-engraved security pad integrated into the reverse of every Sunshine round, is invisible to the naked eye but reveals the word "VALID" and a sunburst pattern when viewed through a proprietary decoder lens. No other private mint offers anything comparable for rounds.

Sunshine Minting has an unusual position in the bullion industry. Founded in 1979 (originally as TENTEX in California before relocating to Idaho's Silver Valley), the company became the world's largest silver blank supplier to the minting industry. That includes supplying the planchets for the American Silver Eagle to the US Mint. The same facility that produces the blanks for the world's most popular sovereign silver coin also strikes the Sunshine round, one of the cheapest branded rounds available. The company relocated to Nevada in 2025 after four decades in Idaho.

The round itself is straightforward: one troy ounce of .999 fine silver in a conservative, brand-focused design featuring a bald eagle in flight before a radiant sun. The visual approach is intentionally plain compared to themed rounds like the Scottsdale Cowboy or the Silver Shield series. Sunshine's pitch is not artistic merit but rather a recognisable, liquid, security-verified generic round at minimal premium over spot.

For stackers comparing 1 oz silver rounds, the MintMark SI feature is the deciding factor. Buyers who want quick in-hand verification for their silver, particularly useful when purchasing on the secondary market or selling to dealers unfamiliar with the seller, get a meaningful security advantage. Buyers who do not own or plan to buy the decoder lens ($5-$10 separately) are paying a small premium for a feature they will not use, and may find better value in a SilverTowne Buffalo or other generic round.

MintMark SI Security System

The MintMark SI is a micro-engraved security pad on the reverse of the round. Verification requires the Sunshine Mint Decoder Lens, a separate optical-grade polymer device sold by Sunshine Minting. Two-step verification: tilt the lens at one angle over the security pad and the word "VALID" appears; rotate the lens 90 degrees and a sunburst pattern becomes visible. The system is entirely optical; no batteries, apps, chemicals, or electricity are needed. The lens features crosshairs and rotation arrows on its reverse side for alignment.

MintMark SI was introduced to address growing counterfeiting concerns in the private bullion market. It predates the Royal Canadian Mint's Bullion DNA technology by several years. The same feature appears on all Sunshine Minting products, not just rounds, so a single decoder lens works across bars and rounds.

Design

The obverse features a bald eagle in flight in front of a radiant sun, with "SUNSHINE MINTING" arced above and ".999 FINE SILVER" and "1 TROY OZ." below. The reverse shows a sunburst/starburst pattern radiating from the centre with the MintMark SI security pad integrated into the central area. Older "vintage" Sunshine rounds (pre-MintMark SI era) feature a slightly different layout and lack the security feature; these have a separate collector following.

Packaging

  • Individual plastic flip
  • Tubes of 20 (mint tube)

Sunshine Silver Round Tax Treatment

The Sunshine round is a private mint product with no legal tender status. Tax treatment is identical to other .999 fine silver rounds and bars in all jurisdictions. The form (round vs bar vs coin) does not create purchase tax distinctions, but the absence of legal tender status means the round cannot benefit from CGT exemptions available to sovereign coins in certain countries.

Purchase Tax

  • United States: No federal sales tax. State-level exemptions apply in approximately 35 states for investment bullion. IRA eligibility is limited: most IRA custodians require sovereign legal-tender coins or rounds from COMEX/NYMEX-approved refiners. Some custodians accept rounds from recognised private mints including Sunshine Minting; confirm eligibility with your specific custodian before purchasing for IRA purposes.
  • United Kingdom: 20% VAT on silver rounds. Not commonly stocked by UK dealers; purchases from US sellers incur shipping plus VAT on import. Not CGT-exempt (no legal tender status).
  • Canada: GST/HST exempt at 99.9%+ purity. The .999 purity qualifies for the investment precious metals exemption.
  • Australia: GST-free as investment-grade silver meeting the 99.9% purity threshold.
  • New Zealand: GST-exempt at 99.9% purity. No capital gains tax on disposal.
  • Singapore: GST-exempt under the Investment Precious Metals scheme for qualifying silver at 99.9% purity from qualifying sources.
  • Hong Kong: No sales tax, no import duty, no capital gains tax on precious metals.
  • South Africa: 15% VAT on all silver bullion. No exemption for non-gold products.
  • EU: Standard VAT rates (17-27%) apply to silver rounds. Import VAT charged on rounds from non-EU sources.

Capital Gains

  • US: Taxed as a collectible at a maximum 28% long-term rate (held over one year). Short-term gains (under one year) taxed as ordinary income. Net Investment Income Tax of 3.8% may apply additionally.
  • UK: CGT at 18-24%. Not CGT-exempt (no legal tender status). Annual exemption of £3,000.
  • Canada: 50% of capital gains included in taxable income.
  • Australia: CGT with 50% discount for holdings over 12 months.
  • Singapore, Hong Kong, NZ: No capital gains tax.

Sunshine Round vs Other 1 oz Rounds and Coins

The Sunshine round's competitive position is defined by one feature: MintMark SI. Every comparison comes down to whether that security technology justifies any premium difference.

The 1 oz SilverTowne Buffalo Round trades at similar or slightly lower premiums. SilverTowne has been operating since 1949 and the Buffalo design is the most ubiquitous private-mint round on the US market. The SilverTowne round has no security features beyond its mint mark and reeded edge. For buyers who want the cheapest named-brand round with maximum dealer recognition, the SilverTowne Buffalo is the standard. For buyers who value quick verification, the Sunshine round is worth the marginal cost difference.

The 1 oz Scottsdale Stacker Round offers a different kind of differentiation: a precision interlocking mechanism for stable storage. The Stacker and the Sunshine round compete on separate axes (physical storage engineering vs authentication technology), making them complementary rather than directly substitutional. The Stacker typically carries a higher premium.

The 1 oz Scottsdale Cowboy Round adds .9999 purity, Western-themed design, and multiple finishes (BU, proof-like, antique) at a higher price point. It targets a different buyer: one who values aesthetics and collectibility over cost efficiency.

Against the 1 oz American Silver Eagle, the irony is sharp. Sunshine Minting supplies the silver blanks to the US Mint for Eagle production. The final Eagle, struck on a Sunshine-supplied planchet, sells at $4-$8+ above the Sunshine round that was struck from the same-grade silver at the same facility. The Eagle's legal tender status, universal recognition, and IRA eligibility command that premium. For buyers focused on metal accumulation rather than those features, the Sunshine round delivers equivalent silver at a fraction of the Eagle's markup. The 1 oz Silver Philharmonic, consistently one of the lowest-premium sovereign coins, narrows the gap further.

1 oz Sunshine Eagle Silver Round: frequently asked questions

The cheapest 1oz Sunshine Eagle silver round listed here is CA$99.38 from NHB Bullion, at 7.3% over spot. As a private mint round, its price tracks the silver spot price closely, with a modest premium reflecting the Sunshine Minting brand and the built-in MintMark SI anti-counterfeiting feature.
Sunshine Minting is a private mint, not a government body, so its rounds carry no legal tender status or face value. Sovereign coins from government mints command a higher premium partly because of legal tender backing, government quality guarantees, and broader secondary-market recognition. Private rounds like the Sunshine Eagle are priced primarily on metal content, making them a lower-premium way to buy silver for investors focused on spot value rather than numismatic or legal-tender benefits.
Both a 1oz silver round and a 1oz silver coin contain the same weight of .999 fine silver, so their melt value is identical. However, sovereign coins typically trade at a higher premium over spot because of legal tender status, government backing, and deeper secondary-market liquidity. Rounds like the Sunshine Eagle usually trade at a smaller premium, which benefits buyers focused on silver content. Resale liquidity for rounds is good but generally narrower than for popular sovereign coins.
Sunshine Minting, Inc. is a private mint based in Nevada, known as a major supplier of silver blanks to the US Mint for American Silver Eagle production. The 1oz Sunshine Eagle round carries the MintMark SI security feature: a micro-engraved pad on the reverse that, when viewed through Sunshine's decoder lens, reveals the word "VALID" at one angle and a sunburst pattern at 90 degrees. This optical verification requires no batteries or apps and is the primary authenticity check for modern Sunshine Minting products.
