About Gold Reef City Mint

A Private South African Mint in Germiston

Gold Reef City Mint is a South African bullion manufacturer and dealer based in Germiston, Gauteng. The business traces its roots to Gold Reef City Coins and Stamps, a retail coin and stamp dealer established in 1986 in the Gold Reef City precinct of Johannesburg. On 30 January 1987 the first coins bearing the GRC mint mark, a Krugerrand proof set, were struck under contract with the South African Mint, and in 1988 the company took over the Gold Reef City Mint operation from the South African Mint Company and began operating as an independent private manufacturer.

It is one of two private mints in South Africa licensed by the South African Mint to strike legal tender coins, an authorised dealer and distributor of the South African Mint, a registered dealer with Rand Refinery, and an accredited member of the Jewellery Council of South Africa. In 2009 its manufacturing operations relocated to the Rand Refinery Complex in Germiston.

Beyond Krugerrand minting, production spans investment rounds, silver bars and platinum bars, and commemorative medallions. The company runs a walk-in counter at its Germiston premises, and prices on its website are quoted in South African Rand.
