About the Archangel Michael Gold

The Ukrainian Archangel Michael Gold Coin

The Archangel Michael is a gold and silver bullion series issued by the National Bank of Ukraine since 2011. Produced by the Ukrainian State Mint (the Banknote Printing and Minting Works of the National Bank of Ukraine), it carries .9999 purity in both metals, matching the highest standard among sovereign bullion coins worldwide. The series earned a place in the Royal Canadian Mint's "Fabulous 15" collection in 2013, a curated set of the world's 15 premier silver bullion coins alongside the Maple Leaf, Britannia, American Eagle, and other flagship programmes.

Archangel Michael is the patron saint of Kyiv and has been depicted on the city's coat of arms since at least the 13th century. The coin's reverse portrays him as a warrior in full armour, holding a flaming sword with wings spread. A circular inscription in Ukrainian quotes from Taras Shevchenko's poem Haydamaky (1841), which deals with the 1768 Koliyivshchyna uprising. Shevchenko (1814-1861) is Ukraine's most revered poet and the founder of modern Ukrainian literature. The pairing of national patron saint and national poet makes this one of the most culturally layered bullion coin designs in production.

The gold versions are available at 1 oz and fractional sizes (1/2 oz, 1/4 oz, 1/10 oz). Mintages are among the lowest for any government-issued bullion series: under 10,000 per denomination per year for gold, and as low as 5,000 for the silver 1 oz (2021 vintage). This genuine scarcity supports secondary market premiums that exceed those of mass-produced sovereign mint coins.

Production has continued through the conflict with Russia that began in February 2022, though with fluctuating mintages. The wartime vintages (2022 onwards) carry particular historical interest as coins minted by a nation under active military threat, something without precedent in the modern bullion market.

All denominations are Brilliant Uncirculated only; no proof versions exist in the standard bullion programme. The obverse features the coat of arms of the National Bank of Ukraine with weight and fineness markings inside an octagonal cartouche. Face values are denominated in Ukrainian hryvnia (UAH); the 20 UAH face value on the 1 oz gold coin represents approximately $0.50 USD, placing it among the most extreme face-value-to-metal-value ratios in sovereign bullion.

The gold coins depict Archangel Michael standing above a dragon, symbolising the triumph of good over evil. This differs from the silver version, where Michael is shown in a warrior stance without the dragon. Coins ship in individual capsules. No specific anti-counterfeiting technology has been documented for the standard bullion issues, though special "F15" privy mark versions were produced for the Fabulous 15 collection.

Known Gold Mintage Ranges

Gold mintages have never exceeded 10,000 per denomination per year. The 1/10 oz gold has historically been the highest-volume gold denomination, an unusual pattern; most bullion programmes see the 1 oz as the volume leader. This may reflect the collector-oriented buyer base and the relatively high per-coin cost given the premiums above spot.

Tax Treatment for Archangel Michael Gold Coins

As official legal tender of Ukraine, the Archangel Michael qualifies for investment gold tax exemptions across major markets. The .9999 purity exceeds every jurisdiction's minimum threshold for gold tax relief.

  • United Kingdom: VAT-exempt as investment gold. Legal tender coins minted after 1800 with at least 900 thousandths purity qualify for 0% VAT. Subject to capital gains tax at 18%/24% with a £3,000 annual allowance. Not UK legal tender, so no CGT exemption. Available through specialist UK dealers, though not widely stocked by mainstream bullion retailers.
  • United States: No federal sales tax. State exemptions apply to investment precious metals in most states. The standard 28% collectibles capital gains rate applies at federal level unless held in a tax-advantaged account.
  • European Union: VAT-exempt as investment gold under the EU Investment Gold Directive. Legal tender coins of at least 900 fineness minted after 1800 qualify.
  • Canada: GST/HST-exempt as investment gold above 99.5% purity. Available through Canadian dealers.
  • Australia: GST-exempt as investment gold of at least 99.5% purity.
  • Singapore: Qualifies as an Investment Precious Metal at .9999 purity. GST-exempt. No capital gains tax.
  • Hong Kong: No sales tax, no import duty, no capital gains tax.

Kyiv's Patron Saint on a Modern Bullion Coin

Archangel Michael's association with Kyiv predates the modern Ukrainian state by centuries. He has appeared on the city's coat of arms since at least the 1200s, and the Monastery of St. Michael of the Golden Domes (founded 1108-1113) remains one of Kyiv's most recognisable landmarks. The decision to place him on a bullion coin connected modern Ukrainian economic sovereignty with deep historical and spiritual identity.

The series launched in 2011, during a period of relative stability for Ukraine. The early years saw mintages around 10,000 for the silver 1 oz, growing to 40,000 by 2018. The 2021 vintage dropped to just 5,000 silver coins, the lowest recorded, making it one of the scarcest sovereign bullion issues of any year.

The Russian invasion of February 2022 added an unplanned historical dimension to the series. The National Bank of Ukraine continued issuing Archangel Michael coins through 2022 and 2023, with the mint operating under wartime conditions. These wartime vintages are without precedent in modern bullion production; no other sovereign mint has produced standard bullion coins during an active existential military conflict. Since 2022, special gilt (gold-coloured) variants of the silver coin have been produced with selective colouring on the Archangel figure, adding visual distinction to the wartime issues.

The reverse inscription from Shevchenko's Haydamaky, translated as "For us and souls of righteous men, and Archistrategos Michael's strength," has taken on additional resonance in the wartime context. Shevchenko's poem dealt with an 18th-century uprising against Polish rule; the choice of text connects historical resistance to contemporary struggle, whether or not the original designers intended that reading.

The gold version's design, showing Michael standing above a vanquished dragon, draws on a different artistic tradition from the silver's warrior stance. The dragon motif connects to both the Book of Revelation (Michael fighting the dragon) and to broader European iconographic traditions where the archangel represents divine protection against evil.

Archangel Michael vs Maple Leaf, Britannia, and Philharmonic

The Archangel Michael gold coin competes with mainstream sovereign bullion on purity but diverges significantly on mintage, premium, and liquidity. The comparison is between a niche collector-bullion coin and the mass-produced coins that dominate the gold market.

The 1oz Gold Maple Leaf matches the Archangel's .9999 purity and Royal Canadian Mint quality. Maple Leaf mintages run into the millions, producing the deepest secondary market liquidity and lowest premiums among four-nines gold coins. The Maple Leaf's MicroEngraved security features surpass anything on the Archangel. For pure gold accumulation at minimal cost above spot, the Maple Leaf is the clear choice.

The 1oz Gold Britannia offers .9999 purity with UK CGT exemption for British buyers, a tax advantage the Archangel cannot match. The Britannia also carries the Royal Mint's security features and broad global recognition. Its premiums sit between the Maple Leaf and the Archangel.

The 1oz Gold Philharmonic is .9999 gold with euro-denominated legal tender status, making it popular in continental Europe. Like the Maple Leaf, its high mintages keep premiums low. The Philharmonic's silver version is .999 (three nines), giving the Archangel's .9999 silver a purity advantage in that metal.

The Archangel's case rests on genuine scarcity. With gold mintages under 10,000 per denomination annually, each coin is meaningfully rarer than the millions produced by the Canadian, British, or Austrian mints. This scarcity supports secondary market premiums but reduces liquidity: selling an Archangel may require finding a specialist dealer or collector rather than accepting an instant buyback quote. The wartime vintages add a historical dimension that no other current bullion programme can claim, though translating historical significance into monetary premium depends on collector demand rather than metal content.
