About the 1g Holy Land Mint Gold Bar

A 1g Gold Bar: The Smallest Standard Entry into Gold

One gram is the smallest standard gold bar weight, equal to 0.03215 troy oz, and at roughly $100-$120 depending on spot it is the lowest-cost physical gold purchase available. Bars at this size are produced as small, thin wafers, typically around 8mm x 15mm, sealed in assay-card packaging that does the heavy lifting on authentication and resale. The card certifies the bar and protects it; in its card a 1g bar is roughly credit-card sized and stores anywhere.

The economics at this weight are blunt. Manufacturing, assaying, packaging and distribution costs are roughly fixed regardless of bar size, and spread over a single gram of gold they dominate the price: typical premiums for 1g gold bars run 8-15% over spot, the highest premium-to-metal ratio of any bar weight. Worked through, buying a full ounce as thirty-one separate 1g bars at a 12% premium costs roughly $280 more than one 1 oz bar at 3%. Nobody accumulates serious gold weight a gram at a time.

That is not really what the format is for. The 1g market runs on gifting, novelty and ultra-low-budget entry: weddings and religious occasions in the Middle East and South Asia, entry-level and gift purchases in the US and UK, and small traditional gold gifts in India. As a first piece of physical gold, a way to introduce someone to bullion, or maximum divisibility in small denominations, a 1g bar does a job that no 1 oz gold bar can.

Tax on a 1g Investment Gold Bar by Country

Standard retail gold bars are struck at 999.9 fineness, comfortably above the 995 threshold that defines investment gold in most jurisdictions, so gold's favourable tax treatment generally applies even at this tiny size.

  • UK: 0% VAT on investment gold bars at 995+ fineness. Bars are not CGT-exempt (that applies only to UK legal tender coins), though at this value a single bar sits far below the £3,000 annual CGT allowance.
  • EU: 0% VAT under the Investment Gold Directive for bars at 995+ fineness.
  • USA: Most states exempt bullion from sales tax, but threshold states matter at this price point: California exempts only above $2,000, New York above $1,000 and Florida above $500, so a single 1g bar is typically taxed there. Long-term gains are taxed at the collectibles rate of up to 28%.
  • Canada: 0% GST/HST for gold at 99.5%+ purity in bar or wafer form.
  • Australia: 0% GST for investment-grade gold at 99.5%+ purity.
  • New Zealand: GST-exempt at 99.5%+ gold purity.
  • Singapore: 0% GST under the Investment Precious Metals scheme; no capital gains tax.
  • Hong Kong: No sales tax, no import duty, no capital gains tax.
  • UAE: 0% VAT on investment gold bullion.

1g Bars vs CombiBars and Larger Sizes

The 1g class is dominated by the big Swiss names. The PAMP Suisse Fortuna is the most recognised 1g bar globally, with Valcambi, Argor-Heraeus, the Perth Mint, the Royal Mint and the Istanbul Gold Refinery also producing the weight. Brand matters more here than at any other size: recognised bars in sealed assay cards stay liquid and dealer-accepted, while unbranded bars or bars with opened packaging have poor resale prospects. Buyback prices reflect the steep acquisition premium, so sellers often do better on secondary markets than selling back to a dealer.

For buyers who want gram-level divisibility without paying the full 1g premium on every gram, Valcambi's CombiBar is the structural alternative: a perforated sheet of 50 or 100 individual 1g segments that snap apart as needed. The per-gram premium is lower than buying separate 1g bars, and the sheet stores like a single bar until divided.

For anyone whose goal is gold accumulation rather than gifting, the size ladder is the real comparison. Premiums fall quickly with weight, with 5g gold bars in the 8-12% range, larger bars cheaper again, and 1 oz minted bars at 1-4% over spot. The honest framing from the research: a 1g bar is a gift, a keepsake or a first step, and a deliberate trade of premium efficiency for the smallest possible ticket size.
