About the 1g North View Products Gold Bar

The 1g North View Products Gold Bar

This bar contains one gram of 999.9 fine gold, the smallest standard gold bar weight and the lowest-cost way to own physical gold outright. At one gram, the entry price sits far below any coin-sized purchase, which is the format's entire reason for existing: gifting, novelty, an introduction to gold ownership, or maximum divisibility for someone who wants their holding split into many small pieces.

The economics need stating plainly. Premiums on 1g gold bars typically run 8-15% over spot, the highest premium-to-metal ratio of any bar weight. Manufacturing, assaying, packaging, and distribution cost roughly the same whether a bar weighs one gram or one hundred, and spread over a single gram of gold those fixed costs dominate the price. Buying a full ounce of gold as thirty-one individual gram bars costs dramatically more than a single 1 oz bar of the same total weight.

Resale follows the same logic. Gram bars from globally recognised refiners in sealed assay cards trade readily; bars from smaller or less widely known producers have a narrower buyer pool, and unbranded or opened bars have poor resale prospects generally. Anyone buying at this weight should keep the original packaging intact, since at gram scale the packaging and its certification carry a meaningful share of the resale value. As a wealth-building vehicle the format is inefficient by design; as a low-cost first piece of gold or a gift, it does exactly what it is meant to.

A 1g gold bar is a small, thin wafer, typically around 8mm by 15mm, and at this weight bars are normally sealed in an assay card: a tamper-evident credit-card-sized package carrying the bar's weight, purity, and the producer's hallmark. The card is not just packaging. Breaking the seal reduces resale value because the bar may then need re-assaying, so the card should be stored flat and protected from bending.

The 999.9 purity is the standard for retail gold bars across the industry, comfortably above the 995 minimum that defines investment gold in the UK and EU. Storage is trivial at this size: the bar takes effectively no space and needs no special handling, since gold neither tarnishes nor corrodes. The main physical care point is the softness of pure gold, which scratches easily if removed from its packaging.

Tax Treatment of 1g Gold Bars

Gold receives the most favourable tax treatment of the precious metals, and a 999.9 fine bar qualifies as investment gold almost everywhere.

  • UK: 0% VAT, since the bar exceeds the 995 fineness threshold for investment gold. Bars are not CGT-exempt, however; that exemption is reserved for UK legal tender coins, so gains above the £3,000 annual allowance are taxable. At 1g the sums involved make this largely theoretical.
  • EU: 0% VAT on investment gold bars at 995+ fineness across all member states.
  • US: no federal sales tax, and most states exempt bullion, though some states apply minimum purchase thresholds that a single gram bar will not meet. Gains are taxed at the collectibles rate of up to 28%. IRA eligibility requires bars from accredited refiners held at an approved depository, so gram bars from unaccredited producers are unlikely to qualify.
  • Canada: GST/HST exempt at 99.5%+ purity.
  • Australia and New Zealand: GST-free as investment-grade gold at 99.5%+ purity.
  • Singapore and Hong Kong: Singapore exempts qualifying investment gold from GST; Hong Kong charges no sales tax or duty. Neither taxes capital gains.

1g Bars vs Swiss Gram Bars and Larger Sizes

The benchmark products at this weight are the Swiss refiner bars. The 1g PAMP Suisse Fortuna is the most recognised gram bar globally, with its Lady Fortuna design and sealed assay card, and Valcambi's gram bars share that universal dealer acceptance. Brand recognition matters more at this weight than any other, because the premium paid is high and recovering any of it at resale depends on the buyer trusting the bar without testing. A gram bar from a less established producer should therefore be priced noticeably below the Swiss names to be worth choosing.

Valcambi's CombiBar offers a structural alternative: a perforated sheet of 50 individual 1g bars that snap apart as needed. The per-gram premium is lower than buying gram bars separately, and the sheet stores as one unit, making it the better vehicle for anyone who specifically wants gram-level divisibility in quantity.

Up the weight ladder, the case for staying small weakens fast. Premiums fall to roughly 2-4% at 100g and 1-2% at 1kg, and even the modest step to a 5g bar or 10g bar dilutes the fixed production costs considerably. The 1 oz bar remains the sweet spot of premium efficiency and resale liquidity. A 1g bar earns its place as a gift or a first step; beyond that, larger units buy meaningfully more gold for the same money.

1g North View Products Gold Bar: frequently asked questions

BGASC currently has the best price at $186.09, roughly 38.9% over the $4,176.20 gold spot price. Small bars like this carry higher per-gram premiums than larger bars. The comparison table above shows live prices from all dealers we track.
The North View Products 1g gold bar weighs 1g and is 999.9 fine (24 carat gold), produced by North View Products. At one gram, it is a small gold bar and contains a single gram of gold at investment-grade fineness.
Gold melts at approximately 1,064°C. Most house fires peak at 600-800°C, so a 1g gold bar would typically survive intact, though it may be discoloured or deformed in an intense blaze. The main risk is locating a small bar in debris afterwards. A fireproof safe or bank deposit box gives additional protection.
The cost of refining, assaying, packaging, and distributing a gold bar is largely fixed regardless of size. Spread over just one gram of gold, those fixed costs represent a much larger percentage of the metal value than they would on a 100g bar, pushing the 38.9% premium higher. Buying larger bars reduces the premium per gram.
