About the 1 oz Armillary Gold Round

A Transformable Gold Coin from Valcambi

The 1 oz Valcambi Armillary Gold Round is one of the most unusual products in the bullion world. Produced by Valcambi SA, one of Switzerland's largest LBMA Good Delivery refiners, it consists of four concentric gold rings that can be separated into four individual 1/4 oz coins or twisted together to form a three-dimensional armillary sphere, the historical astronomical instrument used for celestial navigation from antiquity through the Age of Exploration.

Issued as Cook Islands legal tender at a total face value of $100 CID ($25 per ring), the Armillary uses Valcambi's patented CombiBar technology adapted into a circular format. Each ring is a standalone legal tender coin that can be individually stored, traded, or worn as jewellery. Valcambi markets the piece as combining investment value with wearable art, positioning it at the intersection of bullion, collectible, and luxury goods.

This is not a stacking product. The complex manufacturing process and novelty value mean premiums significantly exceed those of standard 1 oz gold rounds or coins. Buyers are paying for the engineering, the transformative design, and the conversation-piece quality alongside the gold content. For pure metal accumulation at the lowest cost per ounce, conventional bullion is more efficient. The Armillary appeals to buyers seeking a distinctive gift, a display piece with inherent precious metal value, or a product that combines bullion ownership with artistic design.

The piece does not conform to standard coin dimensions. Four rings of varying diameter interlock to form the complete assembly. Valcambi ships each unit in a sealed assay card listing weight, purity, and certified authentication. The perforated CombiBar construction is described as extremely difficult to counterfeit due to the precision engineering required for the separable, interlocking ring mechanism. The Valcambi name is inscribed across the dividing lines between rings, providing visual authentication.

Separation into four individual coins is mechanically straightforward but reassembly into the armillary sphere form is described as challenging. The precision fit of the interlocking rings means that once fully separated, reconnecting them requires careful alignment. Each ring functions independently as a legal tender coin with its own $25 CID face value, making partial liquidation possible without destroying the complete set. Valcambi SA processes approximately 1,800 tonnes of gold annually and holds full LBMA Good Delivery accreditation, making the Armillary among the most unusual products from one of the world's most established refiners.

Armillary Tax Treatment by Jurisdiction

As a .9999 fine gold legal tender coin issued by a recognised sovereign authority (Cook Islands), the Armillary qualifies for investment gold tax exemptions in most jurisdictions. Its legal tender status provides advantages over generic rounds in tax classification.

  • United Kingdom: VAT-exempt as investment gold. The Cook Islands issue qualifies under retained EU rules for legal tender coins of at least 900 fineness struck after 1800. Not CGT-exempt, as the Cook Islands are not a British Crown dependency and the coin does not carry UK legal tender status. Subject to CGT at individual marginal rates (18% or 24%) with the £3,000 annual allowance. The divisible nature means each ring could be disposed of separately, each potentially falling within the CGT allowance.
  • United States: Qualifies for precious metals IRA as a .9999 gold legal tender coin. The legal tender status from the Cook Islands strengthens IRA eligibility compared to private rounds without face values. Sales tax exempt in states that exempt investment gold. Capital gains taxed at the 28% collectibles rate for holdings exceeding one year.
  • EU: VAT-exempt as investment gold under Directive 98/80/EC. Legal tender coin above .900 fineness from a recognised issuing authority qualifies across all EU member states.
  • Canada: GST/HST exempt at 99.5%+ purity in coin form.
  • Australia: GST-free as investment-grade gold exceeding 99.5% purity.
  • Singapore: GST-exempt under IPM provisions for gold at 99.5%+ purity. The coin format from a recognised issuer supports qualification.
  • New Zealand: GST-exempt as gold of 99.5%+ purity in coin form.

Armillary vs Standard 1 oz Gold Bullion

The Armillary exists in a category of its own, making direct comparison to standard bullion somewhat academic. It competes less on premium-per-ounce and more on the distinctiveness of the product as a gift, display piece, or conversation starter.

Against Valcambi's own 1 oz Valcambi Gold Bar, the Armillary carries a substantial premium markup reflecting its complex manufacturing process. The CombiBar (a flat bar scored into separable 1g segments) uses the same divisibility concept but in a purely utilitarian format. The Armillary adds the artistic and jewellery dimension that the CombiBar lacks, along with the three-dimensional sculptural quality.

Against sovereign coins like the 1 oz Gold Britannia or 1 oz Canadian Maple Leaf, the Armillary trades at significantly higher premiums and has substantially lower resale liquidity. Dealers may not offer competitive buyback pricing on unusual format products, and international recognition is limited to specialist dealers. The sovereign coins offer far better value for pure bullion accumulation, but cannot match the Armillary as a novelty gift or wearable art piece.

For buyers specifically interested in divisible gold, fractional sovereign coins (1/4 oz Britannias, 1/4 oz Maple Leafs) offer the same weight granularity with superior liquidity and universal recognition, though without the transformative design element that makes the Armillary unique in the global bullion market.
