About the Rwandan Lunar Ounce Gold

A Zodiac Gold Coin with a Distinctive Finish

The Rwanda Lunar Ounce is an annual gold coin series following the Chinese 12-year zodiac cycle, issued by the National Bank of Rwanda and struck by BH Mayer Kunstprageanstalt GmbH in Munich. Launched in 2017 with the Year of the Rooster, the series is scheduled to complete a full zodiac cycle in 2028 with the Year of the Monkey.

The series' signature feature is its "cracked ice" or "shattered glass" surface treatment. Each zodiac animal is rendered as a mosaic of angular fragments, creating a textured, frosted effect reminiscent of stained glass. No competing lunar programme uses a comparable finish, which makes the Rwanda Lunar visually distinct from the more traditional photorealistic engraving found on the Perth Mint Lunar or the contemporary Asian-influenced style of the Royal Mint Shengxiao Collection.

The 1oz gold coin is struck in .999 fine gold with a face value of 100 Rwandan Francs. Gold mintages are very limited, making these among the scarcest modern gold lunar coins available. The series also exists in silver (the primary bullion product) and platinum, with platinum mintages sometimes as low as 88 pieces.

Rwanda chose the Chinese zodiac despite having no cultural connection to it. The zodiac is used purely as a numismatic and collector framework with global commercial appeal, a common strategy for nations that license their sovereign minting rights to private mints. BH Mayer, which has been minting since 1871, also produces Rwanda's African Ounce wildlife series and Nautical Ounce ship series.

The obverse across all years features the coat of arms of the Republic of Rwanda, a traditional dwelling flanked by two warrior shields, with inscriptions in Kinyarwanda identifying the issuing authority and denomination. The reverse depicts each zodiac animal using the cracked-ice mosaic technique, surrounded by inscriptions including "LUNAR OUNCE," "YEAR OF THE [ANIMAL]," the year, and weight/purity specifications.

A 1/12 oz gold version has been introduced for some recent releases, providing a fractional entry point. The face value of 100 RWF is nominal, worth approximately USD 0.08, far below the coin's intrinsic gold value.

The platinum version of the Lunar Ounce deserves specific mention. At .9995 fine platinum with mintages sometimes as low as 88 pieces, these are among the scarcest modern platinum bullion coins in existence. The silver version, struck in .999 fine at 40mm diameter with a reeded edge, is the primary bullion product with wider availability. Select years have included a 2oz silver proof alongside the standard 1oz BU. All three metals carry the cracked-ice surface treatment on the zodiac animal, which creates a complex, difficult-to-replicate texture that serves as an informal anti-counterfeiting feature alongside the Kinyarwanda-language inscriptions on the obverse.

Tax Position for Rwanda Lunar Gold Coins

The Rwanda Lunar gold coin is legal tender of the Republic of Rwanda at 100 RWF face value. At .999 fine gold, it qualifies for investment gold tax exemptions in most major jurisdictions.

In the United Kingdom, the coin qualifies for VAT exemption as investment gold: it is legal tender in its country of origin and meets the 900+ fineness threshold. It is not CGT-exempt, as that applies exclusively to British legal tender coins. UK buyers seeking CGT exemption with a lunar theme would need the Royal Mint Shengxiao Collection, which carries UK legal tender status.

In the United States, the coin meets IRA purity requirements (.999 fine gold from a sovereign government). However, IRA custodian acceptance of Rwandan coinage varies; buyers should confirm eligibility with their specific custodian. State sales tax exemptions for bullion apply in roughly 35 states.

Canada exempts gold bullion at 99.5%+ purity from GST/HST. Some Canadian dealers list the Rwanda Lunar explicitly as tax-exempt. The coin is also eligible for RRSP and TFSA holding through approved custodians.

Australia treats the coin as GST-free investment gold at 99.5%+ purity. In the EU, gold coins that are legal tender and meet the 900+ fineness threshold are VAT-exempt under the Investment Gold Directive. Germany is a particularly strong market for the series given BH Mayer's Munich base. Singapore classifies qualifying gold coins as IPM, exempt from GST. Hong Kong has no sales tax on gold.

Rwanda Lunar vs Other Lunar Zodiac Gold Coins

The lunar zodiac coin market has at least six major competing programmes, and the Rwanda Lunar occupies a specific niche within it: the most collector-oriented offering, distinguished by low mintages and a unique surface treatment.

The Perth Mint Lunar is the benchmark. Running since 1996 (now in Series III), Perth produces lunar coins at .9999 purity in sizes from 1/20 oz to 10 oz, with vastly higher mintages and the deepest secondary-market liquidity of any lunar programme. The Perth Lunar uses traditional photorealistic engraving, a sharp contrast to Rwanda's cracked-ice mosaic. For buyers prioritising resale confidence and broad recognition, Perth is the standard choice.

The Royal Canadian Mint produces its own lunar series at .9999 purity with Canadian legal tender status. Higher mintages than Rwanda, lower premiums, and the full backing of a G7 sovereign mint. The Royal Mint Shengxiao Collection offers a UK-specific advantage: CGT exemption as British legal tender. For UK-based gold investors, this tax benefit can outweigh the Rwanda Lunar's aesthetic appeal.

The Rwanda Lunar's key differentiator remains the cracked-ice finish. Across the entire global lunar coin market, no other programme replicates this surface treatment. Combined with very low gold mintages, this positions the Rwandan programme as a collector's lunar coin that happens to contain an ounce of gold, rather than a pure bullion product that happens to carry a zodiac design. Buyers focused on gold accumulation at the lowest premium should look to Perth or RCM. Those seeking scarcity and visual distinction will find the Rwanda Lunar fills a gap that larger mints do not attempt to serve.
