About the 10 oz First Mint Silver Bar

Direct from First Majestic's Own Mint

The 10 oz First Mint silver bar is produced by First Mint, LLC, a wholly owned subsidiary of First Majestic Silver Corp. (NYSE: AG, TSX: FR). The parent company mines silver in Mexico, refines it, and mints finished bullion at their facility in Las Vegas, Nevada. This makes First Majestic the only primary silver producer in the world operating a complete mine-to-mint pipeline.

The 10 oz cast bar format gives each piece individual character from the hand-pouring process. First Mint describes their cast bars as "struck and burnished by individual artisans," producing slight pockets, dimples, and ripples that distinguish hand-poured silver from machine-struck bars. The bars carry debossed weight and purity markings with First Majestic or First Mint branding.

First Mint's commercial sales began in March 2024, with the facility processing approximately 700,000 oz of silver in its first year of operation. CEO Keith Neumeyer stated that the in-house facility was built because "sales could have been substantially higher had we not been constrained by limited supply from our minting partners due to the incredible demand the silver industry is currently experiencing." Prior to First Mint's opening, First Majestic sold branded rounds through third-party minting partners, generating over $11 million in revenue from 440,000+ ounces in 2022.

The practical appeal is straightforward: documented silver provenance from mine to finished bar, competitive premiums at or near generic bar levels, and direct-to-consumer availability through firstmint.com with free US shipping on orders over $299.

Tax Treatment for First Mint Cast Silver Bars

First Mint cast bars are private-mint silver without legal tender status. Standard bullion tax rules apply based on the .999+ purity qualification in each jurisdiction.

  • United States: State-dependent sales tax. Approximately 35 states exempt silver bullion entirely; others apply threshold-based exemptions (California over $2,000, Florida over $500, New York over $1,000). IRA eligibility: the .999+ purity meets IRS fineness requirements under Section 408(m), but First Mint's ISO 9001:2015 certification (in progress at launch) may be required by some custodians before accepting these bars. Verify directly with your IRA custodian. Capital gains taxed at the collectibles rate of up to 28% federal rate for holdings over one year. First Mint offers free US shipping on orders over $299, with most orders shipping in 1-2 business days via FedEx.
  • Canada: GST/HST exempt at .999+ purity. First Majestic is a Vancouver-headquartered TSX company (ticker: FR), providing domestic brand familiarity. Available through Canadian dealers including Sprott Money.
  • United Kingdom: 20% VAT on purchase. Not CGT-exempt (not legal tender). Import from US dealers adds shipping costs and potential customs handling fees.
  • Australia: GST-free as investment-grade silver at .999+ purity from a qualifying source.
  • Singapore: GST-exempt under the Investment Precious Metals scheme for .999 silver.
  • Hong Kong: No sales tax, no import duties, no capital gains tax.

First Mint Cast Bar vs Other 10 oz Silver Bars

The First Mint 10 oz cast bar competes across two segments: the hand-poured artisanal market and the standard private-mint bar market.

Vs 10 oz First Mint First Majestic Round: Both products come from the same facility using the same .999+ silver from First Majestic's Mexican mines. The cast bar has a hand-poured aesthetic with individual character in each piece. The round has a more uniform minted finish with the Mayan dancer design. The choice is purely aesthetic; pricing and silver content are equivalent.

Vs Scottsdale Mint "Chunky" pour bars: Scottsdale is the most prominent competitor in the US hand-poured bar market. Their chunky stackers have strong brand recognition and established secondary market demand. First Mint's cast bars are newer to the market (2024) and still building that recognition, but offer the unique mine-to-mint provenance that Scottsdale cannot claim.

Vs generic minted bars (Sunshine, Asahi, SilverTowne): Minted bars have uniform dimensions and typically slightly higher premiums than cast bars. The First Mint cast bar should price at or slightly below minted equivalents while offering distinct hand-poured character. For pure silver accumulation at lowest cost, generic minted bars from high-volume producers may offer tighter premiums due to greater competition.

Vs 10 oz First Mint Cast Bar: This is the same product in the database under its series designation. First Mint produces a single cast bar product in 10 oz with various branding variants (standard, Freedom Bar, Folds of Honor). All share identical specifications and production method.
