About the 5 oz Bearlin Silver Bar

A Limited-Edition Cast Silver Bar from Germania Mint

The 5 oz Germania Mint Bearlin Silver Bar is part of a highly limited commemorative cast bar series launched in 2024. The Bearlin programme takes its name from a portmanteau of "Bear" and "Berlin," drawing on Berlin's centuries-old bear emblem that dates back to the Middle Ages and appears on the city's coat of arms to this day. Germania Mint, a private mint now based in Poland with roots in Germany, created the series to mark their attendance at the World Money Fair (WMF) in Berlin.

The 5 oz edition (released 2025) is the largest format in the series, following the inaugural 2 oz bar from 2024. Each edition is individually serial-numbered with an extremely limited mintage of around 500 pieces, accompanied by a Certificate of Authenticity. This positions the Bearlin firmly in collector territory rather than as a standard bullion stacking product. The premiums reflect this: expect to pay well above spot for the combination of limited availability, artistic design, and the tactile quality of the cast production method.

The .9999 (four nines) purity sets the Bearlin apart from standard .999 silver bars. This matches the refining standard of sovereign mints like the Royal Canadian Mint and places it alongside Germania Mint's other premium products in the Allegories and Germania bullion series.

The cast production method gives each bar a more organic, handcrafted appearance compared to minted bars, with slight variations between individual pieces that are characteristic of the casting process rather than defects. The antique finish adds a darkened patina that highlights the relief of the bear design, creating visual depth that polished finishes cannot achieve. Germania Mint designs and manufactures their own packaging in-house through a dedicated packaging division, using eco-friendly materials for the presentation boxes. Security features rely on the individual serial number, COA verification, and the extremely low mintage rather than embedded technological anti-counterfeiting measures like microtext or optical verification. The combination of cast process, antique finish, and limited production means no two bars are perfectly identical, which adds to the collectible appeal but also means each piece must be evaluated individually for condition grading.

Tax Treatment for Germania Mint Silver Bars

The Bearlin is a private mint cast silver bar with no face value or legal tender status. Its tax treatment follows standard silver bar rules in each jurisdiction, unaffected by its collector premium or limited mintage.

  • European Union: Subject to standard VAT rates. In Germany (the series' cultural home), the standard 19% rate applies to silver bars. The German margin scheme (Differenzbesteuerung) applies only to pre-owned silver, not new-production bars from the mint.
  • United Kingdom: 20% VAT applies as a non-legal-tender silver bar. No CGT exemption.
  • United States: State-dependent sales tax; most states exempt bullion. No federal sales tax. Capital gains at 28% collectibles rate.
  • Canada: GST/HST exempt (exceeds .999 purity threshold at .9999).
  • Australia: GST-free as investment-grade silver (exceeds 99.9% purity threshold).
  • Singapore: GST-exempt under IPM scheme (.999+ purity).
  • Hong Kong: No sales tax or duties.

The collector premium above melt is included in the full capital gains calculation where CGT applies. In Germany, gains on physical precious metals are tax-free if held for more than one year, which may offset the VAT burden for German collectors planning long-term holdings.

Berlin's Bear: From Medieval Heraldry to Modern Silver

The bear-Berlin connection dates to at least 1280, when the bear first appeared on Berlin's city seal. Local legend holds that the city's name derives from the German word for bear, though linguists generally favour a Slavic origin meaning "swamp." Regardless of the etymology, the bear became inseparable from Berlin's civic identity, appearing on the coat of arms, public monuments, and most famously in the Buddy Bear public art installations scattered across the city.

Germania Mint created the Bearlin series specifically for the World Money Fair, one of the numismatic industry's largest annual events held in Berlin. The inaugural 2024 edition (2 oz, antique with colour) was the first release, featuring a roaring bear in a contemporary style with the Brandenburg Gate visible in the background. The obverse carries Germania Mint's shield glyph. The colourised elements of the first edition made it the most visually distinctive in the series.

The 2025 scaling to 5 oz maintained the bear-and-gate motif while stripping back to a pure antique finish without colourisation. The 2026 edition returned to 2 oz with a stamped finish variant. Germania Mint's cast bar programme, which includes Bearlin alongside other series, was noted by numismatic press outlet AgAuNEWS as receiving less industry coverage than their coin series despite high production quality. The series' profile remains niche but is gaining recognition among collectors of limited-mintage bullion art.
