About the 1 Kilo Bull and Bear Silver Coin

RCM's Financial-Themed Kilo Coin

The 1 Kilo Royal Canadian Mint Bull and Bear silver coin brings the financial market motif of the Bull and Bear series into a substantial format. At 1,000 grams of .9999 fine silver, it combines the Royal Canadian Mint's highest purity standard with a weight class that minimises per-ounce premiums. The Bull and Bear series launched in 2025 as a collaboration between the RCM and TD Precious Metals, making it the first Canadian bullion coin directly linked to a major bank's precious metals division.

The financial market theme is distinctive in the bullion world. Most sovereign coins feature national symbols, wildlife, or historical figures. The bull-and-bear motif directly references stock market forces, a concept immediately recognisable to the investment community that buys bullion. The bull represents rising market optimism; the bear represents falling market caution. Julius Csotonyi's reverse design shows the two animals locked in combat against a stylised market chart, creating a coin that speaks directly to its audience.

At .9999 purity, this kilo coin matches the standard set by the 1 Kilo Silver Maple Leaf and exceeds the .999 purity of most competing kilo coins from other mints. The four-nines standard means 999.9 parts per thousand are pure silver, with minimal base metal content. As Canadian legal tender backed by the federal government, it carries the same institutional guarantee as all RCM bullion products.

The Bull and Bear series uses precise radial lines as its primary security feature, identical to those on the flagship Silver Maple Leaf. A micro-engraved laser maple leaf with the year numeral is visible only under magnification. These are the same anti-counterfeiting measures applied across RCM's bullion range, providing authentication without requiring specialist equipment beyond a standard loupe.

Steven Rosati became only the third Canadian artist to develop a monarch portrait for Canadian coinage, and the first to create a portrait of King Charles III for the RCM. The obverse shows a left-profile relief following the same style used across current RCM bullion products.

Tax Treatment for the Bull and Bear Kilo

As a .9999 fine silver coin from the Royal Canadian Mint, the Bull and Bear kilo qualifies for favourable tax treatment in several jurisdictions. The four-nines purity exceeds the thresholds set by most countries for investment-grade precious metals.

  • Canada: GST/HST exempt. Investment-grade precious metals refined to 99.9% or higher purity are zero-rated for federal sales tax. RRSP-eligible through approved dealers, as .9999 silver coins from the RCM qualify for registered retirement savings plans.
  • United States: No federal sales tax. State sales tax varies; approximately 35 states exempt bullion purchases. The .9999 purity exceeds the IRA threshold of 99.9% for silver, though custodian approval should be confirmed for this specific newer issue.
  • United Kingdom: Subject to 20% VAT on purchase. Not UK legal tender, so not CGT-exempt. Silver carries the full standard VAT rate regardless of purity.
  • EU: Silver coins are subject to VAT at local rates (17-27% depending on member state). The margin scheme may apply to pre-owned examples in Germany and the Netherlands, reducing the effective tax to the dealer's profit margin only.
  • Australia: GST-free as investment-grade silver at 99.9%+ purity.
  • New Zealand: GST-exempt as fine silver bullion at 99.9%+ purity.
  • Singapore: GST-exempt under the Investment Precious Metals scheme (silver at 99.9%+ purity from qualifying coins).
  • Hong Kong: No sales tax, no import duty, no capital gains tax.
