About the 5 oz Czech Lion Silver Coin

The Czech Mint's Flagship Series in a 5 oz Format

The 5 oz Czech Lion is the large-format version of the Czech Mint's inaugural bullion coin series, first issued in 2017. Struck by Ceska Mincovna (the Czech Mint) in Jablonec nad Nisou and issued as legal tender of Niue, the Czech Lion has grown from a regional Central European product into an internationally collected bullion coin with strong demand across Europe, North America, and East Asia.

The 5 oz silver version carries a face value of $10 NZD (Niue dollar) and is struck in .999 fine silver at a diameter of 65 mm. The larger format showcases the design detail that is the Czech Lion's primary selling point: a high-relief rendering of the two-tailed heraldic lion that has symbolised the Czech state since the 13th century, incorporating the Crown of Saint Wenceslas and a burning eagle shield.

An embossed hologram security feature called "CZECH SECURITY CHECK", produced by IQ Structures (a Czech nano-optics specialist), distinguishes this from most bullion coins, which rely solely on design detail and precise specifications for authentication. The hologram is unusual in the bullion coin market, where such features are more commonly reserved for proof and collector issues.

The series received a design refresh in 2020, shifting from a naturalistic lion to a more stylised, heraldic depiction by designer Asamat Baltaev. The 5 oz format provides the largest standard canvas for this detailed artwork short of the 1 kg version (limited to just 300 pieces).

The gold versions are struck in .9999 fine gold. Complete sets (all sizes in one year) are extremely limited: gold sets capped at 25 units and silver sets at 50 units. Earlier 1 oz silver issues (2017-2021) carried a $1 NZD face value; this changed to $2 NZD from 2022 onwards.

Tax Treatment for Niue Legal Tender Silver

The Czech Lion is issued as legal tender of Niue, a self-governing territory in free association with New Zealand. Despite being struck in the Czech Republic, its legal status follows Niue's sovereignty.

  • United Kingdom: Subject to 20% VAT on purchase as silver bullion. Not UK legal tender, so not CGT-exempt. Pre-owned examples may be available VAT-free under the margin scheme.
  • Czech Republic and EU: Gold versions qualify for VAT exemption under the EU Investment Gold Directive (post-1800 legal tender coins above .900 purity). Silver versions are subject to local VAT rates (19% Germany, 21% Netherlands, 20% Czech Republic). German dealers may apply the margin scheme (Differenzbesteuerung) to imported silver legal tender coins, reducing effective VAT.
  • United States: Sales tax varies by state. The .999 silver purity meets the IRA threshold, but IRA custodians may not all accept Niue-issued coins. Capital gains taxed at the 28% collectibles rate.
  • Canada: GST/HST exempt as a legal tender coin at 99.9%+ purity. Generally RRSP-eligible through approved dealers.
  • Australia and New Zealand: Niue is a New Zealand-associated territory, which gives these coins a close connection to the NZD currency system. GST-free as investment-grade silver in both countries.
  • Singapore: May qualify for GST exemption under IPM rules (99.9% silver, legal tender coin).
  • Hong Kong: No sales tax, no duties, no CGT.

From Regional Czech Product to International Bullion Contender

The Czech Lion launched in 2017 as Ceska Mincovna's first silver bullion coin. The Czech Mint is not the state mint of the Czech Republic (that role belongs to the Czech National Bank); it is a private mint that licences through Niue for legal tender authority. The choice of Niue followed the pattern established by other private mints seeking sovereign backing for their bullion products.

The original 2017-2019 design featured a naturalistic two-tailed lion wearing the Crown of Saint Wenceslas, the Czech royal crown that forms part of the Bohemian Crown Jewels housed in Prague's St. Vitus Cathedral. In 2020, designer Asamat Baltaev introduced a comprehensive redesign. The new composition is more heraldic in character, incorporating additional symbols of Czech statehood: the burning eagle on a shield (an attribute of Saint Wenceslas, patron saint of the Czech state), a linden branch (the Czech national tree), and representations of the three historical Czech regions: Bohemia, Moravia, and Silesia.

The series has found unexpected international success. Strong demand in China, Hong Kong, and South Korea is unusual for a Central European bullion product and speaks to the quality of the high-relief striking. Domestically, the Czech Lion serves as a point of national pride in the Czech Republic and Slovakia. The German market is significant due to geographic proximity and an active bullion investor base accustomed to ordering from Czech dealers.

Czech Lion 5 oz vs Other Collectible 5 oz Silver Coins

The Czech Lion competes with several other limited-mintage 5 oz silver coins in the international bullion market. The 5 oz Perth Mint Lunar is probably its closest rival: both feature annually changing designs with collector appeal, limited (though not ultra-low) mintages, and strong recognition in Asian markets. The Perth Lunar benefits from the Perth Mint's vast dealer network and established Lunar brand spanning multiple decades.

Against the 5 oz America the Beautiful (now discontinued), the Czech Lion offers ongoing production, higher design complexity, and the hologram security feature. The ATB had far higher mintages and consequently trades closer to melt value for most designs, making it a better pure-silver play but a weaker collector piece.

The 5 oz Mexican Libertad shares the Czech Lion's limited-mintage appeal and strong collector following. The Libertad benefits from a longer heritage (silver series since 1982) and the backing of Mexico's sovereign Casa de Moneda. The Czech Lion counters with its hologram security and more detailed high-relief design work.

For buyers focused on the European bullion market specifically, the Czech Lion is one of very few Central/Eastern European coins competing internationally. The Austrian Philharmonic dominates European sovereign silver by volume but is a mass-production bullion coin without collector premiums. The Czech Lion occupies the niche between pure bullion and numismatics that the Philharmonic does not attempt.

5 oz Czech Lion Silver Coin: frequently asked questions

The cheapest 5oz Czech Lion we track is $457.05, which is around 39.4% over the $65.79 silver spot price. At 5 oz of .999 fine silver, the intrinsic metal value rises and falls with the silver price, while the coin's collectible design typically adds a premium above generic bars.
The Czech Lion is struck by the Czech Mint (Ceska Mincovna) in Jablonec nad Nisou, Czech Republic. The 5oz version is issued as legal tender of Niue and contains 5 troy ounces of .999 fine silver. The series was first issued in 2017 as the Czech Mint's inaugural silver bullion coin and features the two-tailed lion of Czech heraldry.
The two-tailed lion is the heraldic symbol of the Bohemian Kingdom and has been used to represent Czech statehood for centuries. The Czech Lion coin's design features the lion alongside the Crown of Saint Wenceslas (part of the Bohemian Crown Jewels), a burning eagle as an attribute of Saint Wenceslas, and a linden branch, the Czech national tree.
