About the 1 oz American Eagle Silver Round
America's Flagship Silver Bullion Product
The 1 oz US Mint American Eagle Silver Round is the world's best-selling silver bullion product, authorised by the Liberty Coin Act of 1985 and first struck in 1986. Weight, content, and purity are guaranteed by the United States Government. The coin carries a $1 face value (making it legal tender, though its market value far exceeds this) and is struck from .999 fine silver sourced originally from the US Defense National Stockpile under the Strategic and Critical Materials Stock Piling Revision Act of 1979.
The American Silver Eagle commands the highest premiums among sovereign-minted silver coins, typically 20-30% over spot in normal market conditions. This premium reflects domestic US demand, the US Mint's pricing to authorised purchasers (which sets a floor), and the coin's dominant position in the American bullion market. For comparison, the Canadian Silver Maple Leaf carries premiums of 15-20%, and the Austrian Philharmonic sits lower still at 12-18%.
The Eagle underwent its first design change in 2021, transitioning from Type I (the original John Mercanti heraldic eagle reverse, which became the most reproduced coin image in history) to Type II (a landing eagle by Emily Damstra). The new design added an anti-counterfeiting reed pattern on the edge, with a specific missing-reed position that varies by year. Both Type I and Type II were produced in 2021, making it the only year with two reverse designs and creating collector interest in both final-year Type I and first-year Type II coins.

Design
The obverse carries Adolph A. Weinman's Walking Liberty design, originally from the 1916-1947 Walking Liberty half dollar. This iconic image depicts Liberty striding toward the sunrise, draped in an American flag, with one hand extended in a gesture of freedom. The reverse (Type II, 2021-present) shows an eagle landing with an oak branch, designed by Emily Damstra. The previous Type I reverse (1986-2021) featured John Mercanti's heraldic eagle with shield, which became one of the most recognisable coin designs in modern numismatics.
Mint marks indicate the production facility: P for Philadelphia, W for West Point, S for San Francisco. Bullion-issue Eagles are sold in tubes of 20 and monster boxes of 500 (25 tubes).
American Silver Eagle Tax Treatment by Country
The Eagle's status as US legal tender and its specific inclusion in IRA legislation make it one of the most tax-advantaged silver bullion products available to American buyers.
- United States: IRA-eligible under Section 408(m) of the Internal Revenue Code. Eagles are one of only a few coins specifically named in IRA legislation (they have a special exemption from purity requirements that applies to American Eagles regardless of fineness). State sales tax: exempt in approximately 35 states. Capital gains are taxed at the 28% collectibles rate for long-term holdings (over 1 year); short-term gains taxed as ordinary income. No 1099-B reporting requirement for Silver Eagle sales (unlike Gold Eagles, which trigger reporting at 25+ coins in a single transaction).
- United Kingdom: Subject to 20% VAT on purchase. Not CGT-exempt (not UK legal tender). UK buyers face the same VAT as on any other silver product, negating the Eagle's domestic US advantages. The Silver Britannia is the better choice for UK buyers due to CGT exemption.
- Canada: GST/HST exempt at .999 purity. Not RRSP-eligible (not issued by a Canadian mint).
- Australia: GST-free at .999 purity (meets the 99.9% silver threshold). Capital gains subject to CGT with 50% discount if held over 12 months.
- New Zealand: GST-exempt at .999 purity. No capital gains tax.
- Singapore: GST-exempt under the IPM scheme (qualifies as a silver coin of .999+ purity that is/was legal tender).
- Hong Kong: No sales tax, no import duty, no capital gains tax.
- South Africa: Subject to 15% VAT. No silver exemption.
- EU: Silver Eagles are subject to standard local VAT (17-27% depending on country). Some EU countries offer margin scheme treatment for secondary-market coins.
American Eagle vs Other Sovereign Silver Coins
The Silver Eagle's primary competitors are other major government-minted 1 oz silver coins. The decision between them depends on the buyer's country, tax situation, and whether they prioritise lowest cost per ounce or maximum liquidity and IRA eligibility.
Against the Canadian Silver Maple Leaf: the Maple Leaf offers .9999 purity (vs .999), MintShield anti-fingerprint technology, and micro-engraved security features. It carries lower premiums (15-20% vs 20-30%). For buyers outside the US who do not need IRA eligibility, the Maple Leaf delivers more silver per dollar with superior security features. The Eagle wins on US liquidity and IRA eligibility.
Against the Silver Britannia: the Britannia is .999 fine with advanced security features (latent image, micro-text, tincture lines). For UK buyers, the Britannia is clearly superior due to CGT exemption on disposal. For US buyers, the Eagle's IRA eligibility gives it the edge. Premiums are comparable, though the Britannia sometimes runs slightly lower outside the UK market.
Against the Austrian Philharmonic: the Philharmonic is .999 fine and consistently among the lowest-premium sovereign silver coins in European markets. No advanced security features. For European buyers seeking the cheapest sovereign silver coin, the Philharmonic is hard to beat. The Eagle's premium gap over the Philharmonic can be 5-10 percentage points.
For pure metal accumulation without regard for brand or tax status, generic 1 oz silver rounds at 5-10% premiums deliver significantly more silver per dollar than any sovereign coin. The Eagle's premium is the price of maximum liquidity, government guarantee, and IRA eligibility.

The American Eagle design is produced by the US Mint and carries strong recognition among buyers and dealers alike, which sustains demand and supports a premium over plain generic rounds. That recognition also tends to mean easier resale and tighter buy-back spreads. Collector interest in the iconic Walking Liberty obverse adds a secondary layer of demand on top of the pure silver content.

Each 1 oz American Eagle contains 1 oz of 999 fine silver, meaning it is 99.9% pure silver. That works out to 31.1035 grams of fine silver per piece. The .999 fineness meets the investment-grade standard recognised in bullion markets and qualifies for GST or VAT exemption on silver bullion in several countries, including Canada and Australia.
