About the 1 oz Witchcraft Silver Round

Germania Mint's Octagonal Witchcraft Round

The 1 oz Germania Mint Witchcraft silver round is one of the few bullion-weight products that breaks from the standard circular format. Its octagonal shape, combined with .9999 fine silver purity, makes it immediately recognisable in any stack. The series focuses on powerful women from Germanic folklore, with each biennial release depicting a different wise woman archetype from pre-Christian tradition.

Two designs have been released so far: the Seeress (2023) and the Herbalist (2025), with two more planned through 2029. Each 1 oz BU round ships in a capsule with a Certificate of Authenticity from Germania Mint. The Witchcraft series shares Germania Mint's standard four-nines silver purity, matching the level used across their Allegories and Beasts ranges.

For buyers focused on metal content rather than collectibility, the 1 oz BU version is the entry point to the series. The Ritual edition (antique finish with gold accents, mintage 1,000-2,000) and the 2 oz Ultra High Relief (which features gemstone insets and UV-reactive elements) sit in collector territory with premiums well above bullion pricing. The standard BU round trades closer to generic round premiums, though the low mintage of 10,000-20,000 pieces means secondary market availability is not guaranteed indefinitely.

The octagonal shape serves a practical purpose beyond aesthetics: it functions as an instant visual authentication marker. Most counterfeit rounds replicate standard circular formats, making the non-standard geometry an inherent security feature. Combined with Germania Mint's tamper-evident packaging and numbered certificates, authentication is straightforward compared to generic rounds from lesser-known producers.

The 40 mm diameter matches many standard 1 oz coins and rounds, but the octagonal profile means it will not fit standard round tubes. Capsule storage is standard for this product. All pieces across the series share identical dimensions and purity, with only the design varying between releases.

The .9999 purity is notable for a private mint round. Most competitors at this price point, including the 1 oz KOMSCO Zi:Sin, use .999 silver. The additional nine of fineness is a consistent Germania Mint standard applied across their entire product range.

Tax Treatment for Silver Rounds

The Witchcraft round is a privately minted product with no legal tender status in any jurisdiction. It carries no face value from any government, which determines its tax treatment in most countries.

United Kingdom

Silver rounds attract the full 20% VAT on purchase. No CGT exemption applies because the Witchcraft round is not UK legal tender. Both VAT on entry and CGT on any gain at exit make silver rounds one of the least tax-efficient bullion options for UK buyers. The margin scheme may apply on pre-owned examples (VAT charged only on the dealer's profit margin), reducing the effective VAT burden considerably.

United States

No federal sales tax applies. State-level treatment varies, with approximately 35 states exempting bullion from sales tax entirely. The Witchcraft round is not IRA-eligible because it lacks sovereign legal tender status. Capital gains on silver are taxed at the 28% collectibles rate for holdings over one year, or as ordinary income for shorter periods.

Canada

GST/HST exempt provided the purity meets the 99.9% threshold. At .9999 fine, the Witchcraft round qualifies for this exemption regardless of its non-legal-tender status. Canadian tax law treats rounds identically to bars for GST purposes.

European Union

Standard VAT rates apply to silver rounds across EU member states (typically 17-27%). No investment silver exemption exists for rounds in most jurisdictions. Despite Germania Mint operating from Poland, the product receives no special domestic tax treatment. The German margin scheme (Differenzbesteuerung) applies only to pre-owned silver coins, not new rounds.

Australia and New Zealand

GST-free in Australia at 99.9%+ purity from qualifying sources. New Zealand similarly exempts fine silver at 99.9%+ purity from GST. The .9999 purity comfortably meets both thresholds.

Wise Women of Germanic Folklore

Germania Mint launched the Witchcraft series in 2023 to explore the historical role of wise women in pre-Christian Germanic societies. These were not the witch-trial victims of the Early Modern period but rather respected figures who served as healers, herbalists, prophets, and spiritual leaders in their communities.

The first release, the Seeress, depicts a Volva (prophetess) from Norse mythology. The Voluspa, meaning "Prophecy of the Seeress," is the opening poem of the Poetic Edda and describes both the creation and eventual destruction of the world. The coin's figure wears ceremonial attire including a diadem, belt, and pendant crafted from deer skull fragments and antlers, and grasps a staff symbolising mystical authority. The mintage of 20,000 for the BU version established the series at a level well below mass-market bullion but above true numismatic scarcity.

The 2025 Herbalist release shifted focus to a woman with knowledge of healing plants. Her companion is Ratatosk, the mythological squirrel from Yggdrasil (the Norse world tree) who runs between the eagle at the crown and the dragon Nidhogg at the roots, carrying messages (and insults) between them. The mintage dropped to 10,000 for the BU version, half the inaugural release. Whether this reflects planned scarcity or adjusted production is not publicly stated by the mint.

Mateusz Frackowiak designed both releases, maintaining visual consistency across the series: detailed portraiture, flowing hair, natural elements, and animal companions. Two further characters remain scheduled for 2027 and 2029, though their identities have not been revealed. The biennial release cadence gives each design a two-year primary market window before the next issue.

1 oz Witchcraft Silver Round: frequently asked questions

The cheapest 1oz Germania Mint Witchcraft round tracked on this page is $262.99, currently 302.6% over the silver spot price, sourced from APMEX. Prices move with the silver market, so the live figure above reflects today's best offer.
The Witchcraft series is a limited-edition silver round program from Germania Mint featuring powerful women from Germanic folklore. Launched in 2023 with the Seeress and continued in 2025 with the Herbalist, each release is struck in .9999 fine silver and takes a distinctive octagonal shape. Four biennial releases are planned through 2029. These are privately minted rounds with no legal-tender status.
A 1 troy oz silver round weighs 1 oz (31.1035 grams). Troy ounces are the standard measurement for precious metals and are slightly heavier than the avoirdupois ounce used for everyday goods (28.35 grams), so a 1oz silver round is not the same weight as a 1oz food parcel.
Silver rounds are struck by private mints and carry no face value or government backing. Silver coins are issued by sovereign mints as legal tender, with a nominal face value and government guarantee of metal content. Rounds typically trade at a lower premium over spot than government coins, but they lack the legal-tender status that grants certain tax advantages, such as CGT exemption for UK legal-tender coins.
