About the 2 oz Mythical Cities Silver Round
Mason Mint's Mythology-Themed Collector Round
The 2 oz Mason Mint Mythical Cities silver round belongs to an ongoing series depicting legendary lost cities from world folklore. Each release pairs a mythological city with its associated deity, rendered in detailed relief on .999 fine silver. The series launched with Atlantis (featuring Poseidon) and continued with Asgard (featuring Odin), with future releases expected to cover other legendary places.
Mason Mint is an ISO 9001:2015 certified American private mint with over 40 years in precious metals manufacturing. All production is domestic. The Mythical Cities Series sits in their collectible range rather than their generic bullion line, with distribution primarily through Gainesville Coins and a limited network of specialist dealers. The series was originally marketed as the "Lost Cities Series" before being renamed, and some older dealer listings still use the original name.
The 2 oz format at this weight provides a larger canvas for the intricate artwork that defines the series. Mason Mint employs a distinctive production technique using laser-engraved dies that allow weight and purity information to be micro-printed into the design without disrupting the artistic imagery. This is uncommon among private mints, where weight stamps typically occupy dedicated space on the reverse.
Both brilliant uncirculated and antique finish versions are available. The antique finish applies a darkened, aged surface treatment that highlights design details and suits the ancient-city theme, though it does not affect the underlying silver content or purity.

Released Designs
Atlantis (1st release): The obverse depicts Poseidon in underwater armour holding his trident, crowned and surrounded by fish and an Ionic temple. The outer rim features seashells and squids, inscribed "POSEIDON" and "OCEAN EMPEROR." The reverse shows underwater ruins of Atlantis with ancient buildings, Ionic columns, sharks, stingrays, jellyfish, and a passing whale swimming among the structures. A central rotunda anchors the composition.
Asgard (2nd release): The obverse features Odin wearing an eye patch and winged helmet, flanked by his ravens Huginn and Muninn, with a radiant sun and Yggdrasil (the cosmic tree) behind him. The reverse depicts the Bifrost, the burning rainbow bridge connecting Midgard to Asgard, leading to an ornate fortification surrounded by clouds and forest.
Tax Treatment as a Private Silver Round
The Mythical Cities round follows the standard tax treatment for private-mint .999 silver rounds across all jurisdictions. No legal tender status means no special tax concessions in countries that offer them to sovereign coins.
- United States: Sales tax depends on the buyer's state. Most states with precious metals exemptions cover .999 rounds regardless of manufacturer. The purity meets the IRS threshold for Precious Metals IRAs, though custodian acceptance of private-mint rounds varies by institution. Capital gains are taxed at the 28% collectibles rate.
- United Kingdom: 20% VAT applies on purchase. Not CGT-exempt. Available through Atkinsons Bullion, which stocks both the BU and antique finish versions.
- Canada: GST/HST exempt at .999 purity under the investment precious metals classification.
- Australia: GST-free at .999 purity when sourced through approved channels.
- European Union: Standard VAT applies at the local rate (17-27% depending on country). No margin scheme applies to new rounds.
- Singapore: GST-exempt at .999 purity from accredited refiners. Mason Mint's LBMA status should be verified with the dealer.
- Hong Kong: No tax of any kind applies to bullion purchases.
