About Golden Eagle Coins
A Family-Owned Bullion and Coin Dealer in Laurel, Maryland
Golden Eagle Coins is a US precious metals and coin dealer based in Laurel, Maryland, in the Washington D.C. metropolitan area. The business was founded in 1974 by Robert W. (Bob) Mangels Sr. and his nephew Richard J. Stelfox, and was later registered as Golden Eagle Coins, LLC in Maryland in September 2007. It remains in family hands: after Mangels Sr. died in 2017, his son Bob Mangels Jr. took over the business, making Golden Eagle Coins a second-generation family firm.
The dealer's range covers gold coins and bars along with silver, platinum, palladium, and rhodium bullion, plus US and foreign collectible coins. Over the years the company has also dealt in paper currency, memorabilia, jewelry, and stamps, though bullion and numismatics became the core of the business as it moved online. Sales run primarily through its website, and the showroom at 3386 Laurel Fort Meade Rd operates on an appointment basis.
Golden Eagle Coins has sold online since at least August 2001, when its website traded as Golden Eagle Coins and Jewelry. The company states that it was among the first US bullion dealers to connect its website to Comex and World Market live pricing feeds, allowing product prices to update in real time with the metals markets.
Golden Eagle Coins is a PCGS Authorized Dealer, listed under the name Golden Eagle Coin Exchange, and has been accredited by the Better Business Bureau since February 2017.
From Sorting Laundromat Silver to a Second-Generation Dealer
Golden Eagle Coins traces its origins to the late 1960s, when Bob Mangels Sr. ran five coin-operated laundromats. Sorting the takings from his machines, he and his family pulled out the circulating silver coinage that still passed through everyday cash, and the habit grew into a serious interest in precious metals.
By the early 1970s Mangels Sr. had teamed up with his nephew Richard J. Stelfox, and the pair travelled the national coin show circuit across the United States as dealers without a fixed base. In 1974 they opened their first retail shop, and the business that became Golden Eagle Coins was born. The decades that followed brought multiple relocations and expansions before the company settled at its current premises in Laurel, Maryland, in the Washington D.C. metropolitan area.
The product range in those earlier years was broad, taking in paper currency, memorabilia, jewelry, and stamps alongside coins and bullion. The move online narrowed that focus. The earliest archived snapshot of the company's website dates to August 2001, when it traded as Golden Eagle Coins and Jewelry; the jewelry element was later dropped from the trading name as the business concentrated on bullion and collectible coins, from gold bars to rhodium. The company states it was among the first US bullion dealers to integrate its website with Comex and World Market live pricing feeds, an early step in its evolution from brick-and-mortar coin shop to a primarily e-commerce operation. As online sales took over, the physical showroom became appointment-only.
The business was formally registered as Golden Eagle Coins, LLC in Maryland on September 19, 2007, more than three decades after the first shop opened. Bob Mangels Sr. died in June 2017 at the age of 81, and ownership passed to his son Bob Mangels Jr., who owns and runs the business. Earlier that same year the company gained Better Business Bureau accreditation, and it holds PCGS Authorized Dealer status under the name Golden Eagle Coin Exchange.
