About the Asahi Diwali Gold

Asahi Diwali Gold: Bullion for the Festival of Lights

The Diwali series from Asahi Refining is a themed gold (and silver) product line celebrating the Hindu festival of lights. Each bar features Lakshmi, the goddess of wealth, prosperity, and abundance, on its obverse, directly referencing the tradition of purchasing gold on Dhanteras (the first day of Diwali) as an auspicious act. Asahi produces the range in .9999 fine gold across multiple sizes, from 1 gram gift bars through to 1 troy ounce investment bars.

Asahi Refining carries serious institutional credentials. The company is part of Japan's Asahi Holdings and acquired Johnson Matthey's North American and Asian precious metals refining operations in 2015, inheriting infrastructure and expertise from one of the most respected names in the industry (JM held LBMA accreditation since 1852). In 2019, Asahi further expanded by acquiring Republic Metals Corporation from bankruptcy, adding significant refining capacity. The company operates refineries in Salt Lake City, Utah and Brampton, Canada, with an ISO 9001:2015 precious metals mint in Miami, Florida. Asahi holds both LBMA Good Delivery and COMEX-approved status.

The Diwali series specifically targets the South Asian diaspora market and the cultural tradition of gold gifting during Diwali. This is a commercially significant niche: Diwali and the surrounding Dhanteras festival represent one of the world's largest annual gold-buying occasions, with gold purchases during this period accounting for a substantial portion of global demand, particularly in India. Most Western refiners ignore this market segment entirely, giving Asahi a distinctive positioning.

For pure investment purposes, the smaller bars (1g, 2.5g, 5g) carry premiums above spot that are proportionally higher than the 1oz gold bar sizes, as is normal for fractional gold. These smaller pieces are better understood as gifts with inherent gold value than as cost-efficient investment vehicles. The 1 oz bars trade at premiums comparable to other LBMA-accredited bars of the same weight.

All Diwali gold bars carry a unique serial number for traceability and come sealed in tamper-evident packaging with a certificate of assay. The certificate features the Asahi company logo embossed with gold foil alongside "Happy Diwali" text; the reverse bears the Asahi Refining quality mark with weight and purity details. This packaging is designed with the gift market in mind, providing a presentation-ready format that does not require a separate box or case.

The bar design features Lakshmi on the obverse, depicted in a premium finish with contrast between frosted and mirror-like surfaces. The reverse shows the debossed Asahi Refining logo against a reverse-proof background with material, purity, and weight details. The design is consistent across all sizes and does not change annually, making these bars immediately recognisable regardless of when they were purchased.

Asahi also produces Diwali-themed gold coins at 5g and 10g weights in .9999 fine gold, alongside a 1 oz silver bar at .999 fineness (dimensions 50 x 29 x 2 mm). The silver variant features both Lakshmi and Ganesha together, reflecting Diwali's dual focus on material wealth (Lakshmi) and spiritual well-being and wisdom (Ganesha).

Tax Treatment of Asahi Diwali Gold Bars

The Diwali bars are gold bars (not coins), which affects their tax treatment differently from legal tender coins in some jurisdictions. At .9999 fine gold, they meet or exceed the purity thresholds required for investment gold exemptions in all major markets.

United Kingdom

Gold bars of 995 fineness or above are VAT-exempt as investment gold. The Diwali bars at .9999 qualify. However, as bars (not UK legal tender coins), they are subject to CGT at the individual's rate (18% or 24%) with the £3,000 annual allowance applying. For UK buyers seeking CGT exemption, legal tender coins such as the Gold Britannia or Gold Sovereign are the relevant alternatives.

United States

Asahi Diwali gold bars are IRA-eligible. Asahi's LBMA Good Delivery and COMEX-approved status, combined with .9999 gold purity, meets the requirements under IRS Section 408(m) for precious metals IRAs. State sales tax varies; approximately 35 states exempt investment gold bullion entirely.

Canada

Gold bars of 99.5%+ purity are GST/HST-exempt at the federal level. The Diwali bars qualify at .9999 fine. Asahi operates a refinery in Brampton, Ontario, giving the brand direct Canadian market presence.

European Union

Gold bars of 995 fineness or above qualify as investment gold under EU Directive 98/80/EC and are VAT-exempt across all member states.

Australia

Investment-grade gold (99.5%+ purity in recognised forms) is GST-free.

Singapore

Qualifies for the IPM GST exemption as gold at 99.5%+ purity in bar form. Singapore's South Asian diaspora population makes it a natural market for Diwali-themed gold.

Hong Kong

No sales tax, import duty, or capital gains tax on gold bullion.

Diwali Bars vs PAMP Suisse, Perth Mint, and Standard Asahi Bars

The Diwali series sits in a field of themed gold bars from major refiners, each targeting a slightly different buyer.

  • PAMP Suisse themed bars: PAMP produces the widest range of cultural and themed gold bars, including the Lady Fortuna (Hindu goddess imagery), Lunar calendar series, and religious-themed pieces. PAMP generally commands higher premiums due to Swiss brand cachet and longer market presence. Both Asahi and PAMP are LBMA-accredited, so the underlying gold quality is equivalent. PAMP bars include the proprietary Veriscan authentication system, which Asahi bars lack.
  • Perth Mint Diwali products: The Perth Mint has released Diwali-themed coins with Australian legal tender status. These carry sovereign coin advantages (legal tender, potential CGT benefits in some jurisdictions) that Asahi bars do not have. Premiums on Perth Mint products are generally higher.
  • Standard Asahi bars: Asahi's plain (non-themed) gold bars carry the same LBMA and COMEX credentials at slightly lower premiums than the Diwali series. The Diwali bars add the Lakshmi design and gift-oriented packaging at a modest cost increment. For purely investment-focused buyers, the standard bars offer better value; for gift-givers, the themed presentation justifies the difference.
  • Other Diwali products: Indian mints and refiners produce extensive Diwali gold ranges for the domestic market. Asahi differentiates by targeting the diaspora market with Western institutional credibility (LBMA/COMEX), tamper-evident packaging, and distribution through major North American dealers.

The Johnson Matthey heritage running through Asahi's operations is worth noting. JM was among the most respected names in precious metals refining for over 150 years. Asahi inherited that infrastructure and institutional knowledge, giving its products a manufacturing lineage that extends well beyond the Asahi brand name itself.
