About the Australian Wildlife Gold

Perth Mint Australian Wildlife Gold

"Australian Wildlife" is an umbrella covering several distinct Perth Mint bullion sub-series that feature native Australian animals, sitting alongside but separate from the mint's flagship Kangaroo, Koala, and Kookaburra programmes. The gold variants include coins and bars across the Wedge-Tailed Eagle (2014-present), Emu (2018-present), Quokka (2022-present), and various limited-edition wildlife pieces. All are struck at the Perth Mint in Western Australia, one of the world's most respected government mints, established in 1899 as a branch of the Royal Mint.

The defining characteristic of these Wildlife sub-series is low mintage combined with government-mint quality. The Emu and Quokka programmes cap production at 30,000 coins per year for silver, with gold variants produced in smaller fractional sizes. For context, the American Silver Eagle has no mintage cap and typically produces 20-40 million coins annually. Perth Mint Wildlife coins offer something markedly different: collectibility potential layered onto genuine bullion credentials.

All Perth Mint Wildlife coins are Australian legal tender with face values in Australian dollars, struck in .9999 fine gold (or silver). This four-nines purity is a Perth Mint signature that many competitors do not match: the US Mint strikes at .999, as does KOMSCO (South Korea). The purity distinction matters for IRA eligibility in the United States and for investment-grade classification under various national tax regimes.

The Wedge-Tailed Eagle sub-series carries a particularly notable provenance. It was designed by John M. Mercanti, the 12th Chief Engraver of the United States Mint, best known for designing the reverse of the American Silver Eagle. An American engraver designing Australia's eagle coin creates an unusual cross-national collaboration; 2026 marks the 11th Mercanti design for this series.

The gold Wildlife products currently available include 1/4 oz coins in the various sub-series. These fractional pieces carry higher premiums per gram than 1oz gold coins, as is standard for fractional gold, but the low mintages and annual design changes provide collectibility that generic fractional gold lacks.

Australian Wildlife Gold Sub-Series Overview

The Australian Wildlife umbrella encompasses several distinct Perth Mint programmes, each with its own specifications and mintage levels. All share .9999 fine gold purity, Australian legal tender status, and the Perth Mint's standard security features.

Modern Perth Mint bullion coins include micro-laser engraved letters visible only under magnification, the Perth Mint "P" mintmark, and the LBMA-accredited swan logo as standard security features. The 2024 issues across multiple series carried the special "P125" mintmark for the mint's 125th anniversary. The obverse portrait transitioned from Jody Clark's Queen Elizabeth II effigy to Dan Thorne's King Charles III design from 2024 onwards.

Additional limited-edition wildlife coins have included the Saltwater Crocodile, Green Turtle (5,000 mintage), Frilled Neck Lizard (5,000 mintage), Thorny Devil Lizard, and the Thylacoleo (an extinct marsupial lion). These one-off and short-run issues are typically produced in 1 oz silver and selected gold formats, with mintages substantially lower than the recurring annual programmes.

Tax Treatment of Australian Wildlife Gold Coins

All Perth Mint Australian Wildlife gold coins are Australian legal tender at .9999 fine gold, qualifying for investment gold treatment in every major market.

Australia

GST-free as investment-grade gold from a government-owned mint. Perth Mint coins are among the most trusted domestic products in Australia.

United Kingdom

VAT-exempt as investment gold (legal tender, above 900 fineness). Not CGT-exempt since they are not UK legal tender. UK buyers seeking CGT exemption should consider the Gold Britannia or Gold Sovereign.

United States

IRA-eligible at .9999 purity, meeting the requirements under IRS Section 408(m). Perth Mint coins are widely recognised by IRA custodians. The Wedge-Tailed Eagle has particular appeal in the US market due to the Mercanti connection. State sales tax varies.

Canada

GST/HST-exempt as gold coins exceeding 99.5% purity. May also qualify for RRSP eligibility through approved dealers.

European Union

VAT-exempt under the Investment Gold Directive (Directive 98/80/EC).

Singapore

Qualifies for the IPM GST exemption. Perth Mint has a strong presence in Asian markets, and the Quokka sub-series has particular appeal given Rottnest Island's popularity with visitors from Singapore and other Asian countries.

Hong Kong

No sales tax, import duty, or capital gains tax applies.

New Zealand

Gold coins at 99.5%+ purity are GST-exempt as fine bullion.

Australian Wildlife vs Perth Mint Flagship and International Competitors

The Wildlife sub-series occupy a distinct tier within Perth Mint's product range and the broader gold bullion market.

  • Perth Mint Kangaroo: The flagship gold programme with high mintages and maximum dealer availability. Premiums are lower than Wildlife coins because production volumes are far larger. For buyers focused purely on accumulating gold at the lowest premium, the Kangaroo is the better choice. The Wildlife coins trade the Kangaroo's liquidity advantage for lower mintages and annual design variety.
  • Perth Mint Lunar Series: Running since 1996, the Lunar programme has the longest collector following of any Perth Mint themed series. Lunar coins command premium prices on the secondary market, particularly for earlier years. The Wildlife sub-series are newer and less established but carry the same .9999 purity and government-mint credentials.
  • Canadian Wildlife Series (RCM, 2011-2013): The Royal Canadian Mint's wildlife programme was a defined six-coin set that ran for three years. Perth Mint's approach is more open-ended, with multiple concurrent sub-series and the flexibility to add new animals over time.
  • Australian Striped Marlin and Australian Platypus: These sit within the broader Perth Mint wildlife category. The Striped Marlin is a one-off; the Platypus is part of the Next Generation mother-and-baby series. Both are available at 1/4 oz gold, the same weight category as most Wildlife gold coins.

The unique selling point of Perth Mint Wildlife gold is the combination of low mintage (30,000 or less), government-mint quality, .9999 purity, and annual design rotation. This creates a product that functions as both a bullion investment with genuine gold value and a collectible with potential numismatic appreciation. The trade-off versus standard bullion coins is higher premiums and potentially wider buy-sell spreads when liquidating.
