About the 1/4 oz Snow Falcon Gold Coin

A Fractional Gold Coin from the RCM's Wildlife Programme

The 1/4 oz Royal Canadian Mint Snow Falcon Gold Coin is the gold counterpart to the more commonly known 1.5 oz silver Snow Falcon, which was the fourth design in the RCM's unconventional multi-ounce silver bullion programme. The gold version contains 7.78 grams of 999.9 fine gold with a C$10 face value as Canadian legal tender. Issued in 2016, this is a single-year design that was not continued as an annual series.

The coin features the gyrfalcon (Falco rusticolus), the largest falcon species in the world, native to Arctic and subarctic regions including northern Canada. In the medieval period, white gyrfalcons were considered gifts worthy of kings, and they held particular significance in Norse falconry traditions. The reverse design depicts the bird in flight with wings spread, capturing the species' power and wingspan, which can reach 160 cm.

As a single-year issue from the RCM, the Snow Falcon occupies a niche between standard bullion and collectible. It carries the same 999.9 purity as the flagship 1/4 oz Maple Leaf and the same radial-line anti-counterfeiting technology, but its limited production window gives it scarcity that the continuously produced Maple Leaf does not have. For buyers who want RCM quality and purity with a distinctive wildlife design rather than the standard maple leaf motif, the Snow Falcon offers an alternative at this weight.

Design Elements

The obverse carries the Susanna Blunt portrait of Queen Elizabeth II, which was the standard RCM obverse from 2004 through 2023. This portrait was notable as the first design since the 1930s to depict the monarch without a crown. Radial lines fill the background field of both sides of the coin, serving as an anti-counterfeiting measure that creates a light-diffracting pattern visible under magnification.

The reverse shows the gyrfalcon in flight against a clean background. The design was part of a broader RCM programme celebrating Canadian Arctic and northern wildlife. Other designs in the silver version of this programme included the Polar Bear (2013), Arctic Fox (2014), Polar Bear and Cub (2015), Grizzly Bear (2017), and Snowy Owl (2018). Each was a single-year issue.

The gold version shares the same reeded edge and Canadian legal tender markings as all RCM bullion coins. At 20.0 mm diameter, the 1/4 oz gold Snow Falcon matches the dimensions of the standard 1/4 oz Gold Maple Leaf, fitting standard capsules and storage accessories designed for that denomination.

Tax Treatment of the Snow Falcon Gold Coin

As Canadian legal tender struck in 999.9 fine gold, the Snow Falcon qualifies for investment gold exemptions across all major markets.

Purchase Tax

  • Canada: GST/HST exempt as investment-grade gold from the Royal Canadian Mint.
  • United Kingdom: VAT-free as investment gold.
  • United States: No federal sales tax. State-level treatment varies by state.
  • European Union: VAT-exempt under the EU Investment Gold Directive.
  • Singapore: GST-exempt as an Investment Precious Metal.
  • Hong Kong: No sales tax or import duty.
  • Australia: GST-free for investment-grade gold at 99.5% purity or above.
  • New Zealand: GST-exempt for gold at 99.5% purity or above.

Capital Gains and Retirement Accounts

  • USA: IRA-eligible. The 999.9 purity exceeds the IRS minimum of 99.5% for gold in a precious metals IRA. Must be stored with an IRS-approved custodian. Long-term capital gains on bullion are taxed at the 28% collectibles rate.
  • UK: Not CGT-exempt. The Snow Falcon is not UK legal tender. Gains are subject to CGT at the individual's rate with a GBP 3,000 annual allowance.
  • Canada: Capital gains taxed at the 50% inclusion rate. Physical gold bullion is not eligible for RRSP or TFSA accounts.
  • Germany: Capital gains tax-free after a one-year holding period.
  • Australia: CGT applies with a 50% discount for holdings over 12 months.

Snow Falcon vs Maple Leaf and Other RCM Gold Coins

The Snow Falcon's closest competitor is the 1/4 oz Maple Leaf from the same mint. Both are 999.9 fine gold, both carry RCM anti-counterfeiting radial lines, and both have C$10 face values. The Maple Leaf's advantages are significant: vastly greater liquidity, continuous annual production ensuring ready availability, tighter bid-ask spreads on resale, and the addition of Bullion DNA digital authentication (introduced in 2014). The Snow Falcon's appeal is its distinctive design and single-year scarcity.

Among other RCM wildlife gold coins at this weight, the 1/4 oz Polar Bear and 1/4 oz Arctic Fox come from the same programme and share identical specifications and security features. Choice between these designs is largely aesthetic, though secondary market availability varies by year and dealer.

Outside the RCM family, the 1/4 oz Britannia offers CGT exemption for UK buyers that the Snow Falcon cannot match. The 1/4 oz Perth Kangaroo provides annual design variety as an ongoing programme rather than a single-year issue. For most investors, the standard Maple Leaf will be the better purchase at this weight due to its superior liquidity and lower premiums. The Snow Falcon suits buyers who specifically want the gyrfalcon design or who are assembling a collection of RCM wildlife coins.
