Engineered Gold Bars with Interlocking Design

The Scottsdale Stacker is a gold bullion range built around a single engineering concept: precision-machined interlocking edges that allow bars and rounds to nest securely on top of each other. Produced by Scottsdale Mint in Arizona, the Stacker line is the mint's signature product and has become closely associated with the term "stacker" in the bullion community. Scottsdale has trademarked the name.

Gold Stackers are available in bars from 1oz to 20oz, all struck in .9999 fine gold. A 1oz Lion Stacker round is also produced, featuring the Scottsdale Lion in high relief with the same interlocking mechanism adapted for a circular format. The round version uses concave and convex surfaces rather than the rectangular bevels found on the bars.

The interlocking design is not decorative. The top of each bar has a raised bevel that nests into a recessed channel on the bottom of the next bar, creating stable, space-efficient stacks for vault or safe storage. Most "stackable" bars on the market are simply flat bars placed on top of each other. The Scottsdale bevel is genuinely engineered for secure nesting, and it remains the only major producer where this mechanism is the core product feature rather than an afterthought.

Scottsdale Mint was founded in 2008 by Josh Phair, whose background was in mining industry risk management at Willis Towers Watson. That engineering-first approach shows in the product design. The bar obverse features the crowned Scottsdale Lion logo with serial number and weight/purity stampings. The silver Stacker range is substantially broader than the gold line. Silver bars span 10oz, kilo, and 100oz (the "King Stacker," weighing approximately 3.11kg). Silver Lion Stacker rounds come in 1oz, 2oz, 5oz, and 100g sizes, all sharing the same 38.8mm diameter with only thickness varying by weight. This means all four round sizes can interlock within a single stack, mixing denominations. An Eagle Stacker round variant features an eagle design instead of the lion, expanding aesthetic options within the same interlocking system. Bars and rounds use different interlocking mechanisms (rectangular bevels versus concave/convex surfaces) and do not interlock with each other. Scottsdale mints to order rather than holding finished inventory, which means delivery times can extend to 4-6 weeks during periods of high demand.

Tax Treatment of Scottsdale Stacker Gold

Scottsdale Stacker gold products are private mint bars and rounds with no legal tender status. Tax treatment follows the standard rules for gold bullion in each jurisdiction.

In the United Kingdom, gold bars and rounds at 995+ fineness are VAT-free as investment gold. The .9999 purity of the Stacker range exceeds this threshold comfortably. There is no CGT exemption; bars and rounds are not British legal tender. UK buyers face CGT on gains above the GBP 3,000 annual exempt amount. For tax-efficient gold holding in the UK, the Gold Britannia coin offers both VAT and CGT exemption.

In the United States, Stacker bars and rounds are IRA-eligible at .9999 purity, exceeding the 99.5% threshold under IRS Section 408(m). Scottsdale Mint specifically markets its products as IRA-eligible. State sales tax varies; roughly 35 states exempt investment bullion. Many US states exempt bars and rounds of qualifying purity regardless of whether they carry legal tender status.

Canada exempts gold at 99.5%+ purity from GST/HST. Australia treats investment-grade gold bars and rounds as GST-free at 99.5%+ purity.
