About the Treasured Maple Leaf Gold
A Gift-Ready Gold Maple Leaf with a Collectible Edge
The Treasured Maple Leaf is the Royal Canadian Mint's premium bullion sub-line, built on the same foundation as the standard Gold Maple Leaf but distinguished by themed privy marks and presentation-grade packaging. Launched in 2024, each release adds a small commemorative privy mark to the reverse of an otherwise standard Maple Leaf coin, creating limited-edition variants that retain full bullion value.
In gold, the series is produced as a 1/10 oz coin in .9999 fine gold, matching the purity of the standard Maple Leaf. The $5 CAD face value makes it Canadian legal tender, and the coin carries every security feature found on the mainline Maple Leaf: radial background lines and the RCM's micro-engraved maple leaf privy mark containing the last two digits of the year. A second, larger themed privy mark distinguishes each Treasured edition from the standard coin and from other editions in the series.
Each coin ships in a sealed premium card holder rather than the standard tube or flip. The packaging prominently displays the privy mark theme and includes a QR code linking to the RCM's educational website. This makes the Treasured Maple Leaf a ready-made gift without any additional presentation work, which is central to the product's positioning. The Congratulations privy, for instance, is marketed for graduations, weddings, and milestone celebrations.
For buyers whose primary goal is accumulating gold at the lowest cost per ounce, the standard 1oz Gold Maple Leaf remains the more efficient option. The Treasured Maple Leaf's value proposition is different: a recognisable, high-purity bullion coin with limited-edition collectibility and ready-to-gift packaging, at a modest premium above the standard version.

Security Features
The Treasured Maple Leaf incorporates the same security features as the standard Maple Leaf programme. Precise radial lines machined into the coin's background are extremely difficult to replicate. A micro-engraved maple leaf privy mark, visible only under magnification, contains the last two digits of the mintage year. Both features were introduced across RCM bullion in 2014.
The themed privy mark (Year of the Dragon, Congratulations, Polar Bear, or Year of the Snake, depending on the edition) adds a further design element. MintShield surface protection is applied to the silver versions to reduce milk spots, the RCM's proprietary anti-tarnish treatment introduced in 2018.
Each coin is encapsulated and sealed in a tamper-evident premium card holder with an assay-style presentation and QR code verification.
Gold Treasured Maple Leaf Tax Treatment by Country
As Canadian legal tender struck from .9999 fine gold, the Treasured Maple Leaf receives favourable tax treatment in most major bullion markets.
- Canada: GST/HST exempt. RCM gold coins meeting the 99.5%+ purity threshold qualify for the federal precious metals exemption. No provincial variation applies.
- United Kingdom: VAT-free as investment gold (purity exceeds 995 fine). CGT-exempt for UK individuals because the coin is legal tender. The annual CGT allowance (currently 3,000 GBP) applies to any non-exempt bullion in the same tax year.
- United States: No federal sales tax on bullion. State sales tax varies; roughly 35 states fully exempt precious metals, with threshold-based partial exemptions in states like California (over $2,000), Florida (over $500), and New York (over $1,000). IRA-eligible: the .9999 purity exceeds the IRS Section 408(m) minimum of 99.5% for gold. Must be held by an approved custodian.
- Australia: GST-free as investment-grade gold (purity exceeds 99.5%). Capital gains subject to CGT with a 50% discount if held longer than 12 months.
- New Zealand: GST-exempt as fine gold bullion (purity exceeds 99.5%).
- Singapore: GST-exempt under the Investment Precious Metals (IPM) scheme. Gold coins meeting 99.5% purity from approved mints qualify.
- Hong Kong: No sales tax, no import duty, and no capital gains tax on gold bullion.
- EU: VAT-exempt as investment gold under EU Directive 98/80/EC (post-1800 legal tender coin exceeding 900 fine).
Treasured Maple Leaf vs Standard Maple Leaf and Lunar Privy Coins
The Treasured Maple Leaf sits between the standard Maple Leaf and fully bespoke commemorative coins, occupying a niche that several other mints have also explored with privy mark programmes.
Against the standard Gold Maple Leaf, the Treasured edition uses the identical base coin: same Walter Ott reverse design, same .9999 purity, same face value, and same security features. The differences are the themed privy mark, limited mintage (approximately 25,000 per silver variant), and premium card holder packaging. The standard Maple Leaf has unlimited mintage and ships in tubes or individual flips. For pure investment buying, the standard coin will always be cheaper per ounce. The Treasured Maple Leaf adds collectible scarcity and gift-ready presentation at a higher per-coin cost.
The Perth Mint's lunar privy coins follow a similar concept, adding a small Chinese zodiac animal privy mark to standard bullion coins. The key difference is that Perth's privy programme is exclusively zodiac-themed, producing one design per year. The Treasured Maple Leaf programme releases multiple themes per year, including non-zodiac options like the Congratulations and Polar Bear privies. This broader range of themes extends the gift market beyond Lunar New Year.
The RCM Majestic series sits a step above the Treasured Maple Leaf in the Royal Canadian Mint's premium bullion hierarchy. Majestic coins feature entirely bespoke reverse designs (not the standard Maple Leaf design with added privy marks), limited mintages, and higher premiums. The Treasured line is the more accessible entry point into RCM premium bullion.
The Austrian Philharmonic at .999 silver purity (one nine less than the Maple Leaf's .9999) has no comparable privy mark or premium packaging programme. Buyers choosing between the two are choosing between a lower-premium standard bullion coin and a higher-premium limited-edition gift coin built on the Maple Leaf platform.

Treasured Maple Leaf coins are Royal Canadian Mint legal-tender coins, so UK investors benefit from CGT exemption on legal-tender coins from recognised mints. In Canada, 50% of any gain is taxable at your marginal rate. US investors pay up to 28% on long-term gains from precious metal coins. Investment-grade gold versions carry no VAT in the UK or Canada.
