About the 5g Rosa Platinum Bar

The 5g PAMP Rosa Platinum Bar

The 5g Rosa Platinum Bar carries PAMP Suisse's rose motif on 5 grams (0.1607 troy ounces) of .9995 fine platinum, the standard purity for platinum bars. PAMP (Produits Artistiques Metaux Precieux) was founded in Castel San Pietro, Ticino, Switzerland in 1977, became part of the MKS Group in 1981, and is one of the world's leading independent precious metals refineries, with LBMA accreditation alongside COMEX, Shanghai Gold Exchange, and Dubai Multi Commodities Centre listings. PAMP pioneered the decorative "art bar" category in modern bullion, and the Rosa design, a single blooming rose with two buds rendered in high relief, is its aesthetic and gift-market line, sitting alongside the flagship Lady Fortuna.

Be clear-eyed about what a 5 gram platinum bar is for. Gram-weight platinum bars carry very high premiums, in the 20-40% range for 1g-5g sizes, against 5-10% for 1 oz bars, and that acquisition premium is not fully recoverable at buyback. The platinum bullion market is also a fraction of the size of gold's, so dealer selection at small weights is limited. The 1 oz bar is generally considered the minimum practical investment size in platinum.

That makes this product a gift, a presentation piece, or a low-cost first taste of platinum rather than an efficient store of value. Within that niche it is a strong pick: PAMP's brand is among the most recognised in private-mint bullion, the bar comes sealed in a tamper-evident assay card, and the rose design exists precisely for occasions where appearance matters as much as metal. Buyers focused on value per gram should look instead at larger platinum bars.

The assay card is integral to the product. Each card carries the official PAMP assayer's mark with weight and purity certification, and bars removed from their sealed cards may trade at a discount. Note that the Rosa series does not carry PAMP's Veriscan digital fingerprinting; that technology is reserved for the Lady Fortuna line, so authentication of a Rosa bar rests on the assay card, the matching serial number, and PAMP's brand verification services. Platinum itself adds a natural safeguard: at 21.45 g/cm3 it is so dense that no common cheap metal can convincingly substitute for it, which is why counterfeit platinum bars are rare. The metal neither tarnishes nor corrodes, and a carded 5g bar stores flat in something close to credit-card dimensions.

Tax Treatment of a 5g Platinum Bar

Platinum misses the investment-gold exemptions that many countries offer, so the picture varies sharply by jurisdiction:

  • UK: 20% VAT on purchase, and CGT applies on disposal since bars have no legal tender status. This is the least tax-efficient market for platinum bars.
  • EU: Full standard VAT, 17-27% depending on the member state. No investment exemption for platinum.
  • US: No federal sales tax; most states exempt bullion, though a roughly $500-and-under platinum purchase can fall below exemption thresholds in the threshold states (Florida $500, Louisiana, Massachusetts and New York $1,000, California $2,000). Gains are taxed at the collectibles rate of up to 28%. For IRAs, platinum must be at least 99.95% pure from an accredited refiner; PAMP bars at .9995 are widely listed as eligible by custodians, though tiny bars are an unusual IRA choice.
  • Canada: No GST/HST on platinum refined to at least 99.5% purity, which this bar meets.
  • Australia: GST-free as investment-grade platinum (99%+ purity).
  • New Zealand: GST-exempt; the platinum threshold is 99% purity.
  • Singapore: 0% GST under the Investment Precious Metals scheme (platinum 99%+), and no capital gains tax.
  • Hong Kong: No sales tax, import duty, or capital gains tax.
  • Switzerland: Platinum carries 8.1% VAT; only investment gold is exempt.

Rosa Platinum vs Fortuna, Other Refiners, and Bigger Bars

Within PAMP's own range, the natural alternative is the Lady Fortuna. Fortuna is the flagship: higher liquidity, wider dealer recognition, and since 2017 the Veriscan surface-mapping technology that the Rosa line lacks. Purity and assay card quality are identical, so the choice is aesthetic. The rose suits gifting; Fortuna is the safer pick if eventual resale recognition is the priority.

Against other refiners, Valcambi offers similar premiums with a more utilitarian design philosophy, while Heraeus and Argor-Heraeus (with its kinebar holographic security) are the other LBMA-accredited names producing platinum bars. Credit Suisse platinum bars still circulate on the secondary market but are no longer produced. Generic bars trade closer to spot, with PAMP's brand premium buying the design, the assay card, and LBMA-grade provenance. Platinum bar selection is narrower than gold or silver across all refiners, and small sizes are not consistently stocked.

The more important comparison is across weights. A 1 oz platinum bar carries a 5-10% premium against 20-40% for gram-weight bars, and has the best resale liquidity in the platinum bar market. Six 5g Rosa bars cost meaningfully more per gram than a single ounce bar holding similar metal. There is no investment case for accumulating platinum 5 grams at a time; there is a perfectly good case for buying one as a present that happens to hold its metal value.
