1/10 oz Platinum Round: frequently asked questions

Platinum is one of the densest metals (around 21.45 g/cm3), so weight is the primary check: a genuine 1/10 oz round should weigh 3.1104 grams. A magnet test eliminates base-metal fakes, as platinum is non-magnetic. Acid testing with a platinum-specific reagent gives a chemical confirmation. For small generic rounds with no assayer mark, buying from an established dealer and requesting a purchase receipt adds an important layer of protection.
A generic platinum round is a privately minted bullion disc with no issuing government, no face value, and no legal tender status. A platinum coin, by contrast, is produced by a national mint (such as the US Mint or the Royal Mint), carries a nominal face value, and is legal tender in its country. Rounds typically trade closer to spot price; government coins usually carry higher premiums due to their official backing and wider recognisability.
