About the 1/2 oz PAMP Suisse Lunar Silver Bar

Swiss Craftsmanship in Fractional Silver

The 1/2 oz PAMP Suisse Lunar Silver Bar combines LBMA-accredited Swiss refinery quality with the cultural appeal of the Chinese zodiac calendar. Each year's release features a new zodiac animal design, making the bar both an investment in .999 fine silver and a collectible tied to the twelve-year cycle. PAMP ran the original Lunar Calendar Series from 2012 to 2023, and launched the Lunar Legend Series in 2024 with more elaborate mythological storytelling behind each animal.

PAMP Suisse (Produits Artistiques Metaux Precieux), founded in 1977 in Ticino, Switzerland, pioneered the concept of artistic minted bars. Before PAMP, precious metal bars carried only weight and purity stamps. The Lady Fortuna design of 1979 was the first decorative motif ever placed on a bar, and the Lunar series continues this tradition of treating bullion surfaces as a canvas for detailed artwork. Each bar is minted (struck, not cast), giving sharp relief and a mirror-like finish.

At 1/2 troy ounce, this bar offers an entry point to the PAMP Lunar series below the cost of a full 1 oz PAMP Lunar Silver Bar. The per-ounce premium is higher on the fractional piece, reflecting both manufacturing costs and the collectible design premium that all PAMP Lunar products carry over generic silver bars.

Every bar ships sealed in PAMP's distinctive CertiPAMP tamper-evident assay card, displaying weight, purity, serial number, and a certified assayer's signature. Bars produced from 2017 onwards also include Veriscan anti-counterfeiting technology, which is LBMA Security Feature accredited and can verify the bar through its sealed packaging using a smartphone app.

The obverse features the zodiac animal for the year of issue, often accompanied by the Chinese character for that animal. Design style has evolved across the series: early years (2012-2014) featured single animals in formal poses, later years introduced adult-and-young pairings (2015, 2018-2019), and the 2024 reboot shifted to mythological narrative illustrations.

The reverse carries PAMP's standard elements: logo, weight declaration, purity stamp, serial number, and assayer's mark. The distinctive red CertiPAMP card provides a tamper-evident seal that should not be broken. Bars removed from their sealed packaging trade at a discount on the secondary market.

PAMP Lunar Silver Bar Tax Treatment

As a privately produced silver bar with no legal tender status, standard silver bullion tax rules apply across all jurisdictions.

  • United Kingdom: 20% VAT applies on purchase. All PAMP silver bars are CGT-liable at disposal (not UK legal tender). UK buyers specifically seeking lunar-themed silver with CGT exemption should consider the Royal Mint's Lunar Year coins, which carry legal tender status and qualify for CGT-free treatment.
  • United States: IRA-eligible at .999 purity from an LBMA-accredited refiner. State sales tax varies; most states exempt. Capital gains at 28% collectibles rate.
  • Canada: GST/HST exempt as silver bullion at 99.9%+ purity.
  • European Union: Subject to standard VAT (17-27% depending on country). Germany offers the Differenzbesteuerung (margin scheme) on pre-owned silver bars, reducing effective VAT to the dealer's margin only. The Netherlands offers a similar margeregeling.
  • Switzerland: PAMP's home market. Silver bars attract 8.1% VAT (the lowest rate in Europe). PAMP bars can be purchased through GOLDAVENUE, PAMP's own retail platform, with Swiss storage options.
  • Australia: GST-free at 99.9%+ purity from an accredited refiner.
  • Singapore: GST-exempt under the IPM scheme. PAMP is LBMA-accredited, satisfying the refiner requirement. The Lunar theme has particular cultural resonance in Singapore for Chinese New Year gifting.
  • Hong Kong: No tax of any kind. Strong demand for PAMP Lunar products during Chinese New Year season.

Two Zodiac Cycles from Switzerland

PAMP's Lunar Calendar Series launched in 2012 with the Year of the Dragon and ran through all twelve zodiac animals to the Rabbit in 2023, completing a full cycle. Each year's silver bars were produced in 10g, 1 oz, and 100g weights, with some years available in the 1/2 oz format as well. The designs progressed from formal single-animal portraits (2012-2014) through more creative compositions: the 2017 Rooster introduced a distinctive cliff-edge perspective, and the 2015 Goat, 2018 Dog, and 2019 Pig featured adult-and-young animal pairings.

The Lunar Legend Series, beginning in 2024 with the Azure Dragon (guardian of the east, associated with spring and rain), represents a creative reboot. Rather than simply depicting the zodiac animal, the Legend series illustrates the mythological stories behind each creature, drawing from Chinese folklore to give each release narrative depth. The 2025 release features the White Snake (the tale of Bai Suzhen, representing wisdom, transformation, and prosperity).

PAMP's decision to continue the zodiac theme into a second twelve-year cycle, rather than retiring it, reflects the commercial success of the original series. The shift to mythological storytelling differentiates the new cycle from the completed one and supports collector premiums by adding cultural value beyond the zodiac identity alone.

Counterfeiting of PAMP bars has been documented in the secondary market, with at least one case involving fake platinum PAMP bars in replica packaging. The Veriscan technology, introduced in 2017 and subsequently granted LBMA Security Feature accreditation, was developed partly in response to this threat. It maps the microscopic surface topography of each bar at the production line, creating a unique fingerprint that can be verified through the sealed CertiPAMP card using a smartphone or dedicated scanner.

PAMP Lunar vs Other Zodiac Silver Products

The PAMP Lunar series competes in a market segment where several mints produce zodiac-themed precious metals. The half-ounce bar format is less common than 1 oz, narrowing the direct competition.

Against the Perth Mint Lunar Series (Australia's longest-running zodiac bullion programme, since 1996), PAMP offers bars where Perth offers coins. The Perth Mint coins are Australian legal tender, giving them CGT advantages in some jurisdictions. Perth coins also come in .9999 silver versus PAMP's .999. PAMP's advantage is lower premiums per ounce (bars are cheaper than coins to produce) and the sealed assay packaging with Veriscan verification.

Against the Royal Mint's Lunar Year coins (UK legal tender, CGT-exempt in Britain), PAMP silver bars cannot compete on tax treatment for UK buyers. The Royal Mint coins offer both zodiac design appeal and CGT exemption. PAMP bars may offer a lower upfront premium, but the CGT saving on disposal often outweighs this for UK taxpayers holding significant positions.

Against Argor-Heraeus lunar bars (another Swiss LBMA-accredited refiner), PAMP's advantages are Veriscan authentication, stronger brand recognition through the distinctive CertiPAMP red card packaging, and a longer track record in the zodiac bullion space. Both are Swiss, both are LBMA-accredited, and both produce high-quality minted bars.

Against generic (non-themed) 1/2 oz silver bars, the PAMP Lunar carries a collectible premium that reflects its limited annual production and zodiac design. For pure metal accumulation, a generic 1/2 oz silver bar will always cost less per ounce. The PAMP Lunar buyer is paying for Swiss provenance, LBMA certification, collectible appeal, and a culturally meaningful annual design series.
