About the 100 oz Scottsdale Mint Silver Bar
The King Stacker: Engineered for Secure Storage at Scale
The Scottsdale Mint 100 oz "King Stacker" is the largest bar in the Stacker series, a product line that defined the interlocking bullion bar concept. At 100 troy ounces of .999 fine silver, it combines the premium savings of large-format bars with Scottsdale's signature beveled interlocking edges that lock bars together in stable, space-efficient columns. This is a bar designed by someone who thought about what happens after you buy it, not just what it looks like in a product photo.
Scottsdale Mint, founded in 2008 in Scottsdale, Arizona by Josh Phair, built its reputation on engineering-first product design. The Stacker concept uses precision CNC-milled bevels: the top of each bar has a raised edge that nests into a recessed channel on the bottom of the next bar. The result is a stack that resists lateral movement and sits more securely in a safe or vault than flat bars placed one atop another. At 3.11 kg (6.86 lbs) per bar, the interlocking mechanism matters when stacking multiples.
The practical appeal is clearest for buyers accumulating significant silver positions who store their own metal. A stack of King Stackers locked together in a safe is more stable and space-efficient than the same weight in loose bars. The anti-forgery swirl pattern CNC-machined into the reverse of each bar adds a security layer, and individual serial numbers provide chain-of-custody tracking. ISO 9001:2015 certification covers the production process.

The Interlocking Mechanism
The beveled edges that give Stackers their name are precision-machined during production. The top of each bar features a raised bevel; the bottom has a corresponding recessed channel. When bars are stacked, the raised bevel nests into the recess of the bar above, creating mechanical resistance to lateral movement. Same-size bars interlock with each other (100 oz with 100 oz). The rectangular Stacker bars (10 oz, kilo, 100 oz) do not cross-interlock with the circular Lion Stacker Rounds, and different bar sizes within the rectangular range have different footprints and cannot interlock across sizes. Scottsdale has trademarked the "Stacker" name (shown with the registered trademark symbol on products).
Tax Position for the Scottsdale 100 oz King Stacker
As a US private mint product at .999 purity, the King Stacker receives standard investment silver tax treatment. The interlocking design feature has no bearing on tax classification; this is investment bullion, not a manufactured article.
United States
No federal sales tax. Investment bullion is exempt from sales tax in approximately 35 states, with Scottsdale Mint's home state of Arizona providing full exemption. States with partial exemptions (California over $2,000, Florida over $500, New York over $1,000) effectively exempt this bar at normal silver prices given its value exceeds all thresholds. IRA eligible at .999 purity with ISO 9001:2015 certification satisfying IRS requirements under Section 408(m). Capital gains at the 28% collectibles rate for long-term holdings.
United Kingdom
Silver bars carry 20% VAT on purchase in the UK. Not CGT-exempt (bars never qualify regardless of manufacturer). Scottsdale bars are available through UK dealers including Atkinsons Bullion and BullionByPost, with the standard 20% added to the quoted price.
Canada
GST/HST exempt as investment silver at 99.9%+ purity in bar form. Available through Canadian dealers including Sprott Money.
Australia and New Zealand
GST-free in Australia for investment-grade silver at 99.9%+ purity. GST-exempt in New Zealand at the same threshold.
Singapore and Hong Kong
Singapore exempts silver at 99.9%+ from qualifying producers from the 9% GST. Hong Kong has no sales tax of any kind. No capital gains tax in either jurisdiction.
European Union
Silver bars attract full VAT at national rates (19-27%). The margin scheme in Germany and Netherlands may apply to secondary-market Scottsdale bars, though primary availability through EU dealers is limited.
King Stacker vs Other Premium and Institutional 100 oz Bars
Scottsdale competes in the branded private-mint tier, sitting between budget generic bars and sovereign-mint institutional products. Its unique selling point is the interlocking mechanism, which no direct competitor replicates at this quality level.
vs Royal Canadian Mint 100 oz Silver Bar
The RCM 100 oz is .9999 fine (vs .999), individually serialised with Bullion DNA authentication, and backed by a sovereign government. It commands higher premiums but offers superior resale liquidity, global recognition, and authentication technology. The King Stacker offers the interlocking storage feature that the flat RCM bar lacks. For pure investment with eventual resale, RCM wins. For buyers who store their own metal and value the stacking utility, Scottsdale has a practical advantage.
vs PAMP Suisse 100 oz Silver Bar
PAMP Suisse is the world's most recognised bar brand with VERISCAN authentication and LBMA accreditation. It commands premium pricing and offers best-in-class global resale liquidity. The King Stacker cannot match PAMP's institutional recognition, but PAMP cannot match Scottsdale's engineered stacking functionality. Different value propositions for different buyer priorities.
vs Asahi Refining 100 oz Silver Bar
Asahi Refining inherits Johnson Matthey's LBMA accreditation and institutional credibility at competitive pricing. Asahi offers better resale liquidity than Scottsdale due to the LBMA badge, at similar or lower premiums. The King Stacker's advantage is purely the interlocking design. Buyers indifferent to the stacking feature will find better value in Asahi.
vs Generic 100 oz Silver Bars
Generic bars trade at the lowest premiums available. The King Stacker's premium above generic pays for the interlocking mechanism, the anti-forgery swirl pattern, the Scottsdale Lion branding, and individual serialisation. Whether that premium is worthwhile depends on the buyer's storage situation and whether the brand recognition helps on eventual resale.
vs Monarch Precious Metals 100 oz Bar
The Monarch 100 oz is hand-poured (.999) from a US private mint, competing on artisan aesthetics. Scottsdale's CNC precision is the opposite approach: engineered exactness vs hand-pour variation. Scottsdale carries stronger brand recognition and likely better resale premiums. Both lack LBMA accreditation. The King Stacker is the functional choice; the Monarch is the character choice.
100 oz Scottsdale Mint Silver Bar: frequently asked questions
-
Yes. Scottsdale Mint silver bars are 999 fine, meaning 99.9% pure silver content. Each bar is stamped with its weight, fineness, and the Scottsdale Mint hallmark. The .999 standard is the investment-grade benchmark for silver bars and meets purity requirements for tax treatment on silver bullion in markets where that applies.
