About the 5 oz Fortuna Silver Bar

PAMP's Flagship Design in a Substantial Silver Format

The 5 oz PAMP Suisse Fortuna silver bar brings the most recognised bar design in the precious metals industry to a mid-weight format that balances premium efficiency with manageable unit cost. The Lady Fortuna motif, introduced in 1979, was the first decorative design ever placed on a precious metals bar. Before PAMP, bars carried only weight and purity stamps. That innovation created the entire category of minted bars as distinct from plain cast ingots.

PAMP (Produits Artistiques Metaux Precieux) was founded in 1977 in Ticino, Switzerland, and is now part of the MKS PAMP GROUP. The refinery is LBMA-accredited and produces bars in gold, silver, platinum, palladium, and rhodium. The Fortuna design depicts the Roman goddess of fortune blindfolded, holding a cornucopia overflowing with gold coins, alongside sheaves of wheat, poppies, and a wheel of fortune. The design has remained essentially unchanged since 1979.

At 5 troy ounces of .999 fine silver, this bar carries a lower per-ounce premium than the 1 oz Fortuna but a higher premium than the 10 oz Fortuna or larger sizes. Each bar comes sealed in PAMP's tamper-evident CertiPAMP assay packaging with a unique serial number and assayer's mark. The Fortuna series also benefits from PAMP's Veriscan technology, which maps the microscopic surface topography of each bar at manufacture and registers it in a secure database. Buyers can verify authenticity through the Veriscan smartphone app or PC software.

The combination of PAMP's LBMA accreditation, the iconic design, Veriscan authentication, and sealed packaging makes the Fortuna one of the most trusted bar products in the global bullion market. The trade-off is a higher brand premium than generic or lesser-known refinery bars.

Fortuna Silver Bar Range

PAMP produces Fortuna silver bars from 2.5g through 1 kilogram. Common sizes include 1 oz, 5 oz, 10 oz, and 1 kg. All silver Fortuna bars are .999 fine and feature the same Lady Fortuna obverse design, with the PAMP logo, serial number, and specifications on the reverse.

Security Features

  • Veriscan: Each bar's microscopic surface is scanned and registered at manufacture. The profile is unique and impossible to replicate. Verification via smartphone app or PC scanner.
  • CertiPAMP Packaging: Tamper-evident sealed packaging with integrated assay certificate. Includes microprinting and UV-reactive elements.
  • Serial Number: Unique number engraved on the bar and recorded on the certificate, enabling traceability.

The Fortuna design was genuinely groundbreaking in 1979. The idea that a bullion bar could be aesthetically attractive was novel at the time. A 45th Anniversary edition was released in 2024 in select sizes.

Tax Treatment for the 5 oz PAMP Fortuna Silver Bar

Despite PAMP's prestige and Swiss origin, silver bars from private refineries receive no special tax treatment. The tax position is determined by the metal type and purity, not by brand or accreditation.

United Kingdom

Silver bars carry 20% VAT on purchase, regardless of the refiner. Gold PAMP bars are VAT-free, but this does not extend to silver. Bars are also subject to CGT on disposal, as they are not UK legal tender. This is a key distinction from gold Britannias, which are both VAT-free and CGT-exempt. For UK buyers, PAMP's silver bars carry the full double taxation burden of VAT on purchase and CGT on gains.

United States

No federal sales tax. State-level exemptions apply in approximately 35 states. The .999 purity meets IRS requirements for silver in a self-directed IRA, and PAMP's LBMA accreditation means most custodians accept Fortuna bars as IRA-eligible. Gains are taxed at the collectibles rate of up to 28%. Reporting requirements apply: sales of 25 or more 1 oz bars in a single transaction require Form 1099-B from the dealer.

Switzerland

PAMP's home market. Investment gold is VAT-free. Silver carries 8.1% VAT, the lowest rate in Europe. Swiss vault storage offers favourable tax and security conditions for long-term silver holders.

European Union

Silver bars attract full local VAT rates (17-27%). The investment gold exemption under Directive 98/80/EC does not cover silver. In Germany, the margin scheme (Differenzbesteuerung) may reduce effective VAT on secondary-market PAMP silver bars.

Australia and Singapore

Investment-grade silver at 99.9% purity is GST-free in Australia and GST-exempt in Singapore under the Investment Precious Metals scheme. PAMP has a significant presence in Singapore through specialist dealers.

Canada

Silver bars at 99.9% purity or above are exempt from GST/HST.

Hong Kong

No sales tax, no import duty, no capital gains tax. One of the most tax-friendly jurisdictions for silver purchases.

PAMP Fortuna vs Other Premium 5 oz Silver Bars

The 5 oz Fortuna occupies the premium end of the silver bar market, where buyers are paying not just for metal but for brand recognition, security technology, and resale premium recovery.

Against the PAMP Rosa series, the Fortuna is PAMP's flagship and carries stronger market recognition. The Rosa is a design alternative with the same purity and assay card quality but without Veriscan authentication. Rosa bars target the gift market; Fortuna bars target the investment and collector market. At the 5 oz weight, the Fortuna is the standard choice for buyers committed to the PAMP brand.

Compared to the Geiger Edelmetalle Original series, both products offer extensive security features. Geiger uses UV-reactive coating, reeded edges, and micro-engraving. PAMP uses Veriscan digital fingerprinting and CertiPAMP sealed packaging. Both are premium products with collector appeal. Geiger bars are available at the 5 oz weight, though their strongest presence is in metric weights (100g, 250g, 500g, 1 kg, 5 kg).

Against the 5 oz ABC Refinery cast bar, the price gap widens. ABC cast bars carry lower premiums and offer more silver per dollar. The trade-off is the absence of sealed packaging, Veriscan authentication, and PAMP's global brand premium. For Australian buyers focused on cost efficiency, the ABC bar is the rational choice. For buyers who want the strongest brand recognition and security assurance in the silver bar market, the Fortuna justifies its premium.

The broader decision at 5 oz is whether the PAMP premium is worth paying at all. Stepping up to a 10 oz silver bar from any refinery typically delivers better per-ounce premiums than a 5 oz PAMP bar. Buyers choosing the 5 oz Fortuna specifically are making a statement about brand preference and authentication assurance, not optimising for the cheapest silver.

5 oz Fortuna Silver Bar: frequently asked questions

The PAMP Suisse Fortuna 5oz silver bar is 999 fine silver, equivalent to 99.9% purity. This meets the fineness threshold for investment-grade silver recognised in the UK, EU, US, Canada, and Australia.
A 5 troy ounce silver bar weighs 155.52 grams. Troy ounces are the standard unit for precious metals; one troy ounce equals 31.1035 grams. If you are comparing prices with bars listed by weight in grams, 155.52g is the figure to use.
