The 1/2 oz Royal Canadian Mint Wildlife Silver Coin is a fractional entry in the Canadian Wildlife series, a six-coin programme that ran from 2011 to 2013. The series depicted iconic North American animals (Timber Wolf, Grizzly Bear, Cougar, Moose, Pronghorn Antelope, and Wood Bison), releasing two designs per year. With mintages capped at 1,000,000 per design, these were more limited than standard Silver Maple Leafs, giving them a collector dimension alongside their bullion characteristics.

The standout specification is the 9999 fine silver purity. At the time of issue, this was the highest standard in bullion coinage, matching the Silver Maple Leaf. The 1/2 oz fractional size makes this an uncommon product: most silver bullion is traded at the 1 oz standard, and the RCM Wildlife series was primarily produced in 1 oz format. Any 1/2 oz variants in circulation represent either special issues or secondary market segmentation.

The series concluded definitively in 2013 with the Wood Bison. Unlike open-ended programmes that continue indefinitely, the Wildlife series was conceived as a complete six-coin set from inception. This closed-end nature has supported secondary market premiums, particularly for the Timber Wolf (first issue) and Wood Bison (final issue). However, these coins predate the RCM's MINTSHIELD anti-tarnish technology (introduced in 2018), making them susceptible to the "milk spot" cosmetic defect that affected many RCM silver products of this era.

Canadian Wildlife 1/2 oz Silver Specifications

The 9999 purity distinguishes these coins from most sovereign silver bullion. The 1oz Silver Britannia and Austrian Philharmonic use 999 fine; only the Maple Leaf matches the Wildlife series at four nines. The six designs are: Timber Wolf and Grizzly Bear (2011, by William Woodruff), Cougar and Moose (2012, by William Woodruff), Pronghorn Antelope and Wood Bison (2013, by Emily S. Damstra). The obverse carries Susanna Blunt's Queen Elizabeth II portrait standard to RCM coins of this period. Laser-etched radial lines on both faces provide a security feature that deflects light in different directions, though these coins lack the MINTSHIELD coating that protects newer RCM products from the distinctive white milk spots caused by residual planchet cleaning chemicals.

Tax Treatment for Canadian Wildlife Silver

Canada: GST/HST exempt as investment-grade silver bullion. The 9999 purity exceeds the 99.9% threshold for exemption under Canadian tax law. As legal tender coins from the Royal Canadian Mint denominated in Canadian dollars, they qualify without question.

United Kingdom: Subject to 20% VAT on purchase. Not UK legal tender, so no CGT exemption applies; profits on disposal are subject to Capital Gains Tax at the individual's rate (18% basic, 24% higher) above the annual £3,000 allowance. Pre-owned examples may be available under the margin scheme from qualifying dealers.

United States: The Canadian Wildlife series is IRA-eligible for qualifying precious metals accounts, as it meets the 99.9% purity standard required under IRS Section 408(m) and comes from a recognised sovereign mint. This is an advantage over many other fractional silver products. State sales tax exemptions for bullion apply in approximately 35 states.
