About the 10 oz Two Dragons Silver Coin

A One-Off Royal Mint Design in Large Format Silver

The 10 oz Two Dragons silver coin is a substantial format extension of The Royal Mint's 2018 one-off bullion release. The coin features two culturally significant dragons arranged in a yin-and-yang composition: the Welsh dragon (Y Ddraig Goch) and the Chinese dragon, designed by Timothy Noad, Herald Painter and Scrivener for the College of Arms in London. The coin was issued to mark the Royal Mint's 50th anniversary at its Llantrisant headquarters in South Wales.

The Two Dragons was deliberately designed as a bridge between Western and Eastern cultures, reflecting the Royal Mint's expansion into Asian bullion markets during this period. The Welsh dragon, national emblem of Wales since the early medieval period and symbol of the Royal Mint's home territory, occupies the lower half of the composition. The Chinese dragon, representing power, strength, and good fortune in Chinese mythology, fills the upper half. Between them runs the inscription "TWO DRAGONS."

As UK legal tender with .999 fine silver purity, this coin carries CGT exemption for UK residents, making it one of the more tax-efficient large-format silver coins available to the UK market. The one-off production status means no additional coins will be struck; all supply exists on the secondary market. This is not a series with annual releases but a single commemorative bullion issue, which has driven collector premiums higher since the original mintage sold out.

The obverse features the Jody Clark portrait of Queen Elizabeth II surrounded by a textured guilloche background, an ornamental braided-ribbon pattern that was distinctive to this particular issue and added production complexity beyond standard bullion coins. Timothy Noad's appointment at the College of Arms made him unusually qualified for heraldic coin design, and the dual-dragon composition demonstrates sophisticated balance between two cultural traditions of dragon representation.

The gold version's 5,000 mintage is among the lowest for any 1 oz gold bullion coin from a major government mint. The silver version's .999 purity (not .9999) matches the Royal Mint's standard for silver bullion products. No security features beyond the guilloche background and standard Royal Mint quality assurance are documented for this issue.

Two Dragons Tax Treatment

As UK legal tender, the Two Dragons carries the same fundamental tax characteristics as the Britannia and Queen's Beasts series from the Royal Mint. This gives it a material advantage over silver coins issued by non-UK authorities.

  • United Kingdom: 20% VAT on purchase (silver is not VAT-exempt). CGT-exempt on disposal as UK legal tender. This CGT exemption is the primary investment advantage. For UK silver investors who hold coins long enough to appreciate in value, the Two Dragons avoids the CGT liability that would apply to non-UK silver coins like the Perth Mint Kookaburra, KOMSCO Tiger medals, or Somalia Elephant. The margin scheme is available for pre-owned pieces purchased from dealers who offer it.
  • United States: UK legal tender coins at .999+ purity are potentially IRA-eligible, subject to custodian acceptance. The one-off nature and limited mintage may lead some custodians to classify it as a collectible. Capital gains taxed at the 28% collectibles rate. State sales tax varies.
  • European Union: Silver subject to local VAT rates. Investment gold exemption applies only to the gold version.
  • Canada: Silver coins at .999+ purity from recognised sovereign mints qualify for GST/HST exemption.
  • Australia: Investment-grade silver at .999+ purity is GST-free.
  • New Zealand: Silver at .999+ purity is GST-exempt.
  • Singapore: Silver at .999+ purity from recognised mints qualifies as IPM for GST exemption.
  • Hong Kong: No sales tax, no import duty, no capital gains tax. The dual-dragon concept was part of the Royal Mint's strategic intent for Asian market appeal.

Two Dragons vs Other Royal Mint 10 oz Silver

Within the Royal Mint's own 10 oz silver range, the Two Dragons competes with the 10 oz Silver Britannia and the 10 oz Queen's Beasts. All three share UK legal tender status and CGT exemption, so the tax position is identical. The distinction comes down to availability, premium, and purpose.

The Britannia is struck annually in unlimited quantities, offering the lowest premium at this weight for UK legal tender silver. It incorporates the four-feature security suite (from 2021) that the Two Dragons lacks. For buyers seeking straightforward silver accumulation with maximum tax efficiency and minimum premium, the Britannia is the rational choice.

The Queen's Beasts series offered ten heraldic designs before concluding in 2021. It sits between the Britannia (commodity bullion) and Two Dragons (one-off collectible) in terms of premium and availability. Secondary market Queen's Beasts 10 oz coins are more readily available than Two Dragons due to higher production numbers across the series run.

The Two Dragons occupies the most collectible position among these three Royal Mint options. A single production year, limited mintage, and a design concept (dual East-West dragons) that resonates in both Western and Asian collector markets have pushed secondary premiums above those of ongoing or recently completed series. For buyers who already hold Britannias for their core silver position and want exposure to the same mint's limited-edition work, the Two Dragons provides CGT-exempt diversification into the collector-bullion crossover space. Its weakness is liquidity: dealer buyback programmes are less standardised for one-off issues than for flagship series.
