About the 1 oz Witchcraft Silver Coin

Germania Mint's Octagonal Witchcraft Rounds

The 1 oz Germania Mint Witchcraft silver coin is a distinctive octagonal round from the Polish private mint, featuring powerful women from pre-Christian Germanic folklore. Struck in .9999 fine silver with an unusual eight-sided shape, the Witchcraft series stands out visually from every standard round bullion product on the market. These are privately minted rounds (not legal tender coins), which affects their tax treatment, IRA eligibility, and resale liquidity compared to sovereign mint products.

The series launched in 2023 with the Seeress design and is planned to run through 2029 with biennial releases, covering four characters from Germanic mythology. Each design depicts a woman of wisdom from the pre-Christian tradition: herbalists, seers, and spiritual leaders who held positions of knowledge and authority. The octagonal shape is a deliberate choice to distinguish these pieces from both competing products and Germania Mint's own other series (Germania, Beasts, Allegories), which all use conventional round formats.

At 20,000 mintage for the standard BU version of the Seeress and 10,000 for the Herbalist (2025), these are low-mintage pieces by bullion standards. The series also includes "Ritual" editions (antique finish with gold accents, 1,000-2,000 mintage) and 2 oz Ultra High Relief editions with genuine gemstone insets and UV-reactive hidden features, though those command collector rather than bullion premiums. The declining mintages across releases (20,000 to 10,000 for the standard BU) suggest increasing scarcity as the series progresses.

The Seeress design depicts a Germanic Volva (prophetess) in ceremonial attire with a diadem, belt, and pendant fashioned from deer skull fragments and antlers, grasping a ceremonial staff that symbolises mystical authority. The Volva is one of the most important figures in Norse mythology; the Voluspa ("Prophecy of the Seeress") is the first poem in the Poetic Edda, describing the creation and destruction of the world.

The Herbalist features a woman accompanied by Ratatosk, the mythical squirrel from Yggdrasil (the Norse world tree) who carries messages between the eagle at the crown and the dragon Nidhogg at the roots. The 2 oz UHR Herbalist edition includes a genuine amethyst stone inset (chosen for amethyst's historical association with protection against poison) and UV-reactive hidden motifs that require ultraviolet light to reveal, echoing the series' theme of secret knowledge.

Tax Treatment of Private Mint Silver Rounds

As privately minted rounds with no government backing or legal tender status, the Witchcraft series receives no favourable tax treatment in most jurisdictions. This is a significant cost distinction from sovereign mint coins of equivalent silver content.

  • UK: 20% VAT applies on purchase. No CGT exemption (not legal tender). The margin scheme may apply to pre-owned examples purchased through qualifying dealers, reducing effective VAT to near zero on the dealer's buy-sell spread.
  • US: Not IRA-eligible. IRA regulations under Section 408(m) require silver to come from a COMEX/NYMEX-approved refiner or national government mint. Germania Mint meets neither criterion. State sales tax varies, though many states exempt all precious metals bullion at .999+ purity regardless of issuer (Arizona, Texas, Utah, and approximately 30 others provide full exemption).
  • Canada: Subject to GST/HST despite the .9999 purity. Canadian tax law requires coins to be legal tender from a recognised mint for the precious metals exemption to apply. Not RRSP-eligible.
  • EU/Germany: Standard VAT applies (19% in Germany, 20-27% elsewhere). Despite the Germanic branding and production in Poland, these are not government products and receive no sovereign-mint tax advantages. The Differenzbesteuerung margin scheme may apply to pre-owned pieces in Germany.
  • Australia: Subject to 10% GST. Investment-grade exemption requires the item to be legal tender or in a form commonly traded on commodity markets.
  • Singapore: Does not qualify as Investment Precious Metal under MAS guidelines. Subject to 9% GST.

In practice, UK and EU buyers pay 19-20% more for these rounds compared to equivalent sovereign silver. US buyers in exempt states face no purchase tax penalty, but lose IRA eligibility permanently.

Witchcraft vs Government Silver Coins and Other Private Mints

The fundamental trade-off with the Witchcraft series is aesthetics and collectibility versus practicality and efficiency. Against sovereign mint alternatives like the 1 oz Silver Britannia, 1 oz Silver Maple Leaf, or 1 oz Silver Philharmonic, the Witchcraft rounds carry no legal tender status, no tax advantages in most jurisdictions, reduced liquidity on resale, and no retirement account eligibility. Government coins also benefit from standardised packaging, serial-number-based authentication, and universal dealer recognition that private rounds cannot match.

The Witchcraft's advantages are purely artistic and collectible: the octagonal shape is genuinely unusual in the bullion market and serves as an instant visual authentication marker, the .9999 purity matches the highest sovereign standards (equalling the Canadian Maple Leaf), mintages are genuinely low (dropping from 20,000 to 10,000), and designer Mateusz Frackowiak's work across the series maintains a consistent aesthetic of detailed portraiture with flowing natural elements. For buyers who value aesthetics, scarcity, and the physical novelty of a non-round coin over tax efficiency and liquidity, the series delivers something sovereign mints do not.

Among private mints, Germania Mint competes with Scottsdale Mint's premium offerings, Perth Mint's themed collector lines, and various European private mints. The octagonal shape, gemstone insets (on UHR editions), and UV-reactive features make the Witchcraft series one of the most technically ambitious products from any private mint. The 500-piece Herbalist 2 oz UHR is firmly in numismatic collector territory rather than bullion. For pure bullion accumulation, sovereign coins are the superior choice on every practical metric; the Witchcraft series exists for a different buyer.
