The Royal Canadian Mint's 1.5 oz Silver Bullion Coin

The SuperLeaf is a silver bullion coin from the Royal Canadian Mint weighing 1.5 troy ounces, 50% more silver than a standard bullion coin. Struck in .9999 fine silver (four nines, the highest purity standard for silver bullion), it was issued in 2015 and 2016 with a face value of $8 CAD. The name "SuperLeaf" is a dealer and market convention, not the RCM's official designation; the Mint catalogues the coin under its Maple Leaf bullion programme without the "Super" prefix.

The reverse features three sugar maple leaves intertwined at their stems, designed by Stan Witten. This tri-leaf design was originally created in 2007 for the Million Dollar Maple Leaf, a 100 kg gold coin (.99999 fine) with a face value of $1 million CAD that was, at the time of its creation, the world's largest gold coin. Five were produced, and one was famously stolen from Berlin's Bode Museum in 2017. The SuperLeaf adapts that design from a headline-grabbing 100 kg gold showpiece to an accessible silver bullion product.

The 1.5 oz format is unique to the Royal Canadian Mint. No other sovereign mint produces a standard bullion offering at this weight, placing the SuperLeaf in an unusual middle ground between the standard 1 oz silver coins that dominate the market and the less common 2 oz silver coins produced by a handful of mints. Per-ounce premiums on the SuperLeaf tend to be competitive with or slightly lower than the standard Silver Maple Leaf, making it an efficient way to accumulate silver in sovereign-minted form.

SuperLeaf Coin Dimensions and Security

The 38 mm diameter is identical to the standard 1 oz Silver Maple Leaf, but the SuperLeaf is noticeably thicker at 4.5 mm versus approximately 3.2 mm for the standard coin, accommodating the extra half-ounce of silver. Tubes hold 15 coins rather than the standard 25 used for 1 oz coins, reflecting the greater per-coin weight.

Security Features

The SuperLeaf carries the same security features as standard Silver Maple Leaf coins from 2014 onwards. Precision-machined radial lines on both obverse and reverse create a light-diffraction pattern that is difficult to replicate. A micro-laser engraved privy mark on the reverse reveals the last two digits of the year of issue ("15" or "16") when viewed under magnification.

SuperLeaf Tax Treatment by Country

As Canadian legal tender from a sovereign mint, the SuperLeaf's tax treatment follows the standard rules for investment-grade silver coins in each jurisdiction.

Canada

Investment-grade silver at 99.9%+ purity is GST/HST-exempt under the Excise Tax Act. The SuperLeaf's .9999 purity exceeds this threshold by a wide margin. The face value is inscribed in both English and French ("ARGENT PUR" / "FINE SILVER") as required for Canadian legal tender. Capital gains are subject to the 50% inclusion rate, with the Listed Personal Property rule applicable: if both purchased and sold for under $1,000 CAD, no capital gain is reportable. For RRSP and TFSA eligibility, qualifying silver bullion can be held in these registered accounts subject to custodian rules.

United States

The SuperLeaf is IRA-eligible as a sovereign-mint coin at .9999 purity, exceeding the IRS requirement of 99.9% fineness for silver. The 1.5 oz weight means each coin counts as 1.5 ounces toward IRA holdings, offering efficient allocation per unit. Sales tax varies by state, with most states exempting investment bullion. Capital gains are taxed at the collectibles rate of up to 28% for long-term holdings.

United Kingdom

Silver coins attract 20% VAT at point of sale regardless of legal tender status, since VAT exemption applies only to investment gold under retained EU law. The SuperLeaf is not CGT-exempt in the UK because CGT exemption is limited to UK legal tender coins from The Royal Mint. Gains are subject to Capital Gains Tax at the standard rates with a £3,000 annual exemption.

Australia and New Zealand

Both countries exempt silver at 99.9%+ purity from GST. The SuperLeaf at .9999 qualifies in both jurisdictions. Australia's exemption saves the 10% GST; New Zealand's saves the 15% GST.

SuperLeaf vs Standard Silver Maple Leaf and Other 1.5 oz Options

The most natural comparison is between the SuperLeaf and the standard 1 oz Silver Maple Leaf. Both are .9999 fine silver from the Royal Canadian Mint with micro-laser security marks and radial line background finishing. The SuperLeaf adds 50% more silver per coin at a face value of $8 CAD versus $5 CAD for the standard coin. Per-ounce premiums on the SuperLeaf tend to be competitive with or slightly below the standard Maple Leaf, making the larger coin marginally more efficient for accumulating silver. The tradeoff is liquidity: the standard 1 oz Maple Leaf is one of the most widely traded silver coins globally, accepted by every dealer worldwide, and available in any quantity. The SuperLeaf, issued only in 2015 and 2016, has a fixed secondary market supply.

No other sovereign mint produces a standard 1.5 oz silver bullion coin, making direct weight-class competition impossible. The closest options in the "slightly larger than 1 oz" space are the 2 oz silver coins available from various producers, including the Perth Mint and the Royal Mint. A 2 oz coin typically carries a lower per-ounce premium than two separate 1 oz coins, following the general rule that premiums decrease with increasing unit size.

Other RCM 1.5 oz silver coins exist from the same era, including the Polar Bear (2013), Howling Wolf (2014), Arctic Fox (2014), Howling Wolves (2016), and White Falcon (2016). All share the 1.5 oz format and .9999 purity. The SuperLeaf is the only one with a botanical subject rather than wildlife, using the tri-leaf design from the Million Dollar Maple Leaf. Collectors sometimes pursue the full set of RCM 1.5 oz coins as a unified collection.

It is important to distinguish the SuperLeaf from the Super Incuse Silver Maple Leaf, which is a separate RCM product line launched in 2021. The Super Incuse features ultra-deep incuse striking (1.5 mm depth) on a standard 1 oz or 1 kg coin with the familiar single maple leaf design. The SuperLeaf (2015-2016) is a standard-relief bullion coin with a different reverse design and a different weight format.
