The Treasured Maple Leaf is a premium bullion sub-line of the classic Silver Maple Leaf, launched in 2024 by the Royal Canadian Mint. Each coin uses the standard 1 oz .9999 fine silver Maple Leaf as its base but adds a themed privy mark to the reverse and comes sealed in enhanced presentation packaging with a card holder format. The result is a coin that retains full bullion value while adding a collectible element aimed at the gifting market.

Multiple privy mark themes are released each year, creating several variants for collectors and gift buyers. The 2024 releases included Year of the Dragon (Chinese zodiac), Congratulations (fireworks-themed, designed for graduations, weddings, and milestones), and Polar Bear. The 2025 release features Year of the Snake. First Strikes versions are available with more limited mintages, typically 25,000 for the silver coins. A 1/10 oz .9999 gold Treasured Maple Leaf also exists.

A micro-engraved maple leaf privy mark (standard on all RCM bullion since 2014) sits alongside the themed privy mark, providing a secondary authentication layer visible only under magnification.

The themed privy mark itself adds a further layer of design-based authentication specific to each release variant, making the coin harder to counterfeit than a plain bullion issue. Canada

GST/HST exempt as investment-grade silver bullion from the Royal Canadian Mint. The .9999 purity comfortably exceeds the 99.9% threshold required for the federal exemption. Capital gains on disposal are taxed at the 50% inclusion rate, with the Listed Personal Property rule exempting transactions where both purchase and sale prices fall below $1,000 CAD.

United States

IRA-eligible under IRS Section 408(m), as .9999 purity silver from a sovereign government mint exceeds the .999 minimum threshold. Many states exempt bullion purchases from sales tax. Federal capital gains on silver are taxed at the collectibles rate of up to 28% for long-term holdings.

United Kingdom

The gold version qualifies as investment gold and is VAT-free. Silver versions are subject to 20% VAT when purchased from UK dealers, though the margin scheme may apply on secondary market sales. As Canadian legal tender coinage, both gold and silver versions are CGT-exempt for UK individuals, the same treatment as the standard Maple Leaf.

Treasured Maple Leaf vs Standard Maple Leaf and Perth Lunar Privy

The closest comparison is the standard 1 oz Silver Maple Leaf, since the Treasured variant uses the same base coin. Both share .9999 purity, 38 mm diameter, $5 CAD face value, MintShield protection, radial lines, and the micro-engraved maple leaf security feature. The differences are the themed privy mark, the premium card holder packaging, and the limited mintage (approximately 25,000 per variant versus unlimited production for the standard Maple Leaf). On a per-ounce basis, the standard Maple Leaf costs less and offers identical silver content and security.

The Perth Mint produces lunar privy coins with a similar concept: a standard bullion design with a small zodiac animal privy mark added. Perth's privy coins change with the Chinese zodiac cycle and are struck at .9999 purity. The Treasured Maple Leaf extends the privy concept beyond zodiac themes to include non-zodiac designs like Congratulations and Polar Bear, broadening the appeal beyond Chinese New Year collecting.
