Its range spans gold coins, silver bars, and the wider field of gold, silver, platinum, and palladium bullion, alongside rare coins for collectors. The principals brought nearly three decades of combined experience in the numismatic and bullion industry into the retail venture, and the firm maintains direct sourcing relationships with major world mints and distributors, a structure carried over from its wholesale origins and paired with a low-overhead operating model.

Beyond the web store, Monument Metals runs a storefront at its Frederick address that accepts walk-in customers for buying and selling transactions during business hours, with no appointment required. The buying side of that service covers coins and bullion as well as gold jewellery, silver flatware and hollowware, and other precious metal items.

From Wholesale Roots to the Inc. 5000

Monument Metals was launched in 2014 by Jonathan Swyers and a group of co-founders whose careers until then had been spent entirely in the wholesale end of the precious metals and rare coin marketplace. Selling to the general public was a new direction for the principals, who carried nearly three decades of combined industry experience into the venture. The retail strategy drew directly on those wholesale years: distributor connections and sourcing arrangements with major world mints, combined with low overhead, formed the basis of the company's pricing model. The business was incorporated in Maryland as Monument Metals LLC on 17 September 2014, and its website has been captured by the Wayback Machine since at least April 2016.

Growth over the following decade earned outside recognition. The company appeared on the Inc. 5000 list of America's fastest-growing private companies for three consecutive years, ranking No. 659 in 2022, No. 585 in 2023, and No. 1,440 in 2024. The 2024 placement reflected revenue growth of 358 percent over the preceding three years.

In 2025 the company broadened its purchasing operation beyond coins and bullion. An expanded local buying programme added gold jewellery, silver flatware and hollowware, and other precious metal items to its purchasing services, with walk-in sellers accommodated at the Frederick, Maryland storefront. The same year, Swyers launched a donation programme supporting Johns Hopkins Children's Center in Baltimore. The initiative has a personal dimension: Swyers was treated for a brain tumour at that hospital at the age of twelve, and the giving programme grew out of that experience.
