The Armillary is one of the most unconventional products in the gold bullion market. Produced by Swiss refiner Valcambi and issued as Cook Islands legal tender, this 1 oz gold piece consists of four concentric rings that can be separated into individual 1/4 oz coins, twisted into a three-dimensional armillary sphere sculpture, or worn as a bracelet or pendant. It is bullion, jewellery, and desktop ornament in a single product.

Each complete Armillary contains one troy ounce of .9999 fine gold, divided across four rings that each carry a $25 Cook Islands Dollar (CID) face value, totalling $100 CID for the assembled piece. First issued in 2015, it is marketed by Valcambi under their "A'coins" brand and uses the same patented CombiBar divisibility technology that the refiner applies to its scored gold bars.

Valcambi SA, headquartered in Balerna, Switzerland, is one of the world's largest precious metals refiners, processing approximately 1,800 tonnes of gold annually. The company holds LBMA Good Delivery accreditation. The Armillary represents Valcambi's most experimental product concept, sitting at the intersection of bullion investment, Swiss precision engineering, and wearable art.

The naming references the armillary sphere, a historical astronomical instrument consisting of graduated rings representing celestial circles. Used from antiquity through the Age of Exploration for celestial navigation, the instrument was fundamental to the history of astronomy. The coin's ability to twist into this shape is a direct homage to that scientific heritage.

This is not a product for pure bullion stacking. The premium over spot is significant compared to standard 1oz gold coins, and liquidity on the secondary market is limited. The Armillary is better understood as a gold-backed gift, novelty, or collector piece where the inherent metal value provides a floor price. Buyers looking to minimise cost per ounce should consider conventional sovereign coins instead.

Armillary Specifications and Construction

The Armillary does not have conventional coin dimensions. Rather than a single disc, it comprises four rings of varying diameter that nest concentrically. Each ring bears inscriptions including "COOK ISLANDS", the face value, weight, purity (.9999 AU 1/4 OZ), and year. The 2015 issue features the Ian Rank-Broadley portrait of Queen Elizabeth II. The Cook Islands (population approximately 15,000) is a self-governing territory in free association with New Zealand, issuing legal tender coins through arrangements with various foreign mints and refiners.

The reverse design is minimal and geometric, with the Valcambi name running across the ring dividing lines and a central void. The aesthetic prioritises the coin's transformative function over pictorial imagery. Valcambi's assay card packaging lists weight, purity, and authentication details from a certified assayer.

Separation into four individual coins is mechanically possible but reassembly into the armillary sphere form is described as challenging due to the precision fit of the interlocking rings. Valcambi states that the perforated CombiBar construction is "very difficult if not impossible to counterfeit" because of the engineering tolerances required to produce functioning separable rings that also lock together into a three-dimensional shape.

Tax Treatment of the Armillary Gold Coin

The Armillary benefits from favourable tax treatment in most jurisdictions because it meets the key criteria: it is legal tender from a recognised issuing authority, struck in gold of .9999 fineness (well above the 900 fine threshold most regulations require).

United Kingdom

The gold Armillary is VAT-exempt as investment gold. UK retained EU rules exempt gold coins that are legal tender, post-1800, and at least 900 fine. The Armillary exceeds this at .9999 purity. It is not CGT-exempt because Cook Islands coins are not British legal tender. Capital gains are taxed at the individual's rate (18% or 24%) with the annual allowance applying.

European Union

VAT-exempt across the EU under the Investment Gold Directive (Council Directive 98/80/EC). Legal tender coin, gold purity above .900, qualifies without question.

United States

The Armillary is IRA-eligible as a .9999 gold legal tender coin meeting IRS Section 408(m) purity requirements. State sales tax treatment varies; most states exempting investment gold bullion will cover this product. No federal sales tax applies.

Canada

GST/HST-exempt as investment-grade gold exceeding the 99.5% purity threshold.

Australia

GST-free as gold of 99.5%+ purity in coin form, qualifying as investment-grade precious metal.

Singapore

Qualifies for the IPM (Investment Precious Metals) GST exemption at 9% GST savings, as gold at 99.5%+ purity.

Hong Kong

No sales tax, no import duty, and no capital gains tax apply to gold in Hong Kong.

Armillary vs Standard Gold Coins and Divisible Alternatives

The Armillary does not compete directly with standard bullion coins on price. Its premium over spot is substantially higher than a conventional 1oz Gold Maple Leaf or 1oz Gold Britannia, reflecting the complex manufacturing process and the product's novelty positioning.

The more relevant comparison is with other divisible or premium gold products:

• Valcambi CombiBar: The CombiBar is a flat gold bar scored into separable 1g segments. It uses the same divisibility concept as the Armillary but in a purely utilitarian rectangular format. The CombiBar is cheaper per gram and more practical for fractional gold needs; the Armillary adds the artistic and wearable dimension at a cost premium.
• PAMP Suisse gold bars: Both are Swiss-made .9999 gold products from LBMA-accredited refiners. PAMP bars (including the Lady Fortuna line) are conventional flat bars with strong brand recognition and tighter buy-sell spreads. The Armillary's transformative quality is unique but comes with reduced liquidity.
• Standard sovereign coins: A 1oz Maple Leaf or 1oz Philharmonic will always be cheaper per ounce and easier to sell. For buyers whose priority is accumulating gold at the lowest premium, the Armillary is the wrong product.

The Armillary occupies a narrow niche: buyers who want .9999 gold with legal tender status in a format suitable for gifting, display, or wearing. The gold content provides a verifiable floor price, and the Cook Islands legal tender status ensures favourable tax treatment, but the premium paid above that floor is the cost of the Armillary's unique physical form. Dealers may offer less favourable buy-back terms than for standard bullion, so buyers should factor the wider spread into their cost calculation.
