The Bahar Azadi (Persian for "Spring of Freedom") is an Iranian sovereign gold investment coin introduced in 1979 following the Iranian Revolution, replacing the Pahlavi coin. It is produced by the Security Printing and Minting Organization of the Central Bank of Iran. The coin plays a significant cultural role in Iran, commonly used as a store of value and given as a wedding gift. Pre-1989 versions feature a calligraphic/geometric design; post-1991 versions show a portrait of Ayatollah Khomeini.

The Bahar Azadi is .900 fine gold, equivalent to 21.6 carat. It is neither 24 carat (pure gold) nor 18 carat; the .900 alloy follows the historic tradition of mixing gold with copper for durability. This purity qualifies it as investment gold for VAT exemption purposes in the UK and EU, as both require a minimum of .900 fineness for coins.
