About the 10 oz Classic Gold Bar

The 10 oz Argor-Heraeus Classic Gold Bar

The Classic is Argor-Heraeus's standard investment-grade bar line, and at 10 troy ounces (311.035 g) of 999.9 fine gold it is one of the larger formats the Swiss refiner offers below the institutional 400 oz Good Delivery bar. The 10 oz Classic is produced as a cast bar, the traditional poured format, which keeps production costs down relative to minted bars. Bars at this size carry very low percentage premiums (broadly 1-3% for 10 oz gold bars) but represent a substantial capital outlay, which places them with larger portfolios rather than first-time buyers; a 1oz gold bar covers the entry-level case.

What the Argor-Heraeus name adds is institutional pedigree. The Mendrisio refinery has held LBMA Good Delivery status for gold since 1961, is COMEX-accredited since 1974, and is one of only seven global LBMA Referees, the panel that audits other refiners' Good Delivery compliance. Annual gold refining capacity is roughly 400 tonnes, putting it in the same tier as PAMP and Valcambi within the Ticino refining cluster. For a five-figure single bar, that recognition matters: LBMA-accredited bars are accepted by dealers and vault networks without re-assay.

Every Classic bar carries an individual serial number and is certified by an Argor-Heraeus sworn assayer; cast bars below 400 oz ship with a numbered assay certificate. The design is deliberately minimal, the AH monogram with weight, metal, and purity markings and no decorative motifs, a choice that minimises production cost and keeps the authentication marks legible. Buyers wanting artistry buy a Fortuna; buyers wanting the most gold per pound, dollar, or franc at a trusted name buy a bar like this.

Tax on a 10 oz Gold Bar by Country

At 999.9 fineness the bar comfortably exceeds the 995 investment-gold threshold used across the UK, EU, and Switzerland, so purchase taxes are rarely an issue. The bar is not legal tender, which matters in one jurisdiction in particular.

  • UK: 0% VAT as investment gold, but no CGT exemption; only UK legal tender coins escape CGT. On a bar of this value, gains can clear the £3,000 annual allowance quickly, so the total lifecycle cost can exceed that of CGT-exempt Britannias despite the bar's lower purchase premium.
  • EU and Switzerland: VAT-exempt as investment gold. Germany is notable: gains on bars held over 12 months are completely tax-free.
  • US: Most states exempt bullion from sales tax, several with purchase thresholds this bar easily exceeds (e.g. California's $2,000 line). IRA-eligible: gold bars require 99.5%+ purity from an accredited refiner, and Argor-Heraeus is both LBMA and COMEX accredited. Long-term gains outside an IRA are taxed at the collectibles rate of up to 28%.
  • Canada and Australia: Exempt from GST/HST and GST respectively as gold at 99.5%+ purity in bar form.
  • Singapore and Hong Kong: No sales tax on qualifying investment gold and no capital gains tax; the bar's lower premium makes it the straightforward choice in these zero-tax jurisdictions.

Argor-Heraeus Classic vs PAMP, Valcambi, and the Kinebar

Within the Ticino refining cluster, the Classic's direct rivals are bars from PAMP Suisse and Valcambi, both also LBMA-accredited and of equivalent refining standing. The practical differences are cosmetic and commercial: the PAMP Fortuna carries an iconic decorative design and commands a modest brand premium over plainer refiner bars, while Valcambi is known for its clean minimalist bars and divisible CombiBars. The Classic competes on price; its blank-reverse, logo-and-numbers design exists precisely to keep premiums competitive. At equal purity and equal LBMA recognition, the cheapest of the three on the day is usually the rational pick.

Within Argor-Heraeus's own range, the alternative is the Kinebar line, launched in 1994, which adds kinegram holographic security to the bar itself. The Classic relies instead on serial numbers, assayer certification, and the refiner's chain of custody. Ten-ounce bars sit in the size band where the tungsten-core counterfeiting risk becomes relevant for secondary-market purchases, since tungsten's density (19.25 g/cm3) nearly matches gold's (19.32 g/cm3); buying from authorised dealers with intact certification, or requesting ultrasonic testing on larger bars, addresses this.

Against coins, ten 1 oz sovereign coins offer better divisibility and stronger retail recognition, at premiums of roughly 3-8% each versus 1-3% for the single bar. The bar maximises gold per unit of spend; the coins maximise flexibility at exit. German buyers note that after the 12-month CGT-free holding period, the bar's lower entry premium is a clean win over other 10 oz gold bars and coins alike.

10 oz Classic Gold Bar: frequently asked questions

A 10 troy ounce gold bar contains 10 oz of metal. The Argor-Heraeus Classic is 999.9 fine gold, meaning essentially all of that weight is pure gold, with each bar individually serialised and certified by an Argor-Heraeus sworn assayer.
Argor-Heraeus SA is a Swiss refinery founded in 1951 in Ticino, Switzerland, and is accredited on the LBMA Good Delivery List for gold (since 1961) and silver (since 1992). It is also one of just seven global LBMA Referees, meaning it audits other refiners for Good Delivery compliance. LBMA Good Delivery status ensures the bar is accepted without re-assay into major vault networks and exchange settlements worldwide. The Classic bar carries an individual serial number and a sworn assayer certificate.
