About the 1g Credit Suisse Liberty Gold Bar

A Swiss Banking-Era Gold Bar with an American Design

The 1g Credit Suisse Liberty is a small minted gold bar featuring the Statue of Liberty on its reverse, manufactured by Valcambi SA in Balerna, Switzerland. Credit Suisse gold bars first appeared on world markets in 1979, and the Liberty design, identified by a copyright date of 1985, was specifically created to appeal to the American investment market. It is the only Credit Suisse bar range to carry a pictorial design on the reverse; all other Credit Suisse minted bars have repeating CS logos or blank reverses.

The bar is struck in 9999 fine gold (24 karat) and comes sealed with a serial-numbered assay certificate verified by a CHI Essayeur Fondeur assayer. Valcambi, which has held LBMA Good Delivery accreditation since 1968, has been the sole manufacturing partner for authentic Credit Suisse bars since 2003. Credit Suisse owned Valcambi outright from 1980 until the refinery changed hands, and the bars from both brands come from the same Swiss facility.

The Credit Suisse brand carries an unusual backstory. The bank itself was acquired by UBS in March 2023 following its near-collapse, with the merger completed in May 2024. Existing Credit Suisse bars remain investment-grade bullion; their value comes from the gold content and Valcambi authentication, not the bank's financial standing. Long-term continuation of the Credit Suisse branding under UBS ownership is uncertain, which may eventually make existing Liberty bars scarcer on the new-production market.

At 1g, this is the smallest size in the Liberty series, which extends to 2g, 5g, 10g, and 20g. Premiums on 1g bars of any brand run 8-15% over spot due to the fixed costs of production and packaging, making them the least efficient weight for gold accumulation. The Liberty bar's niche is the intersection of Swiss refining quality, an iconic American symbol, and the lowest possible entry price for a branded gold bar.

Design

The obverse displays the Credit Suisse logo in a rounded rectangle frame, with weight, metal type ("OR FIN" / "FINE GOLD"), purity, and the unique serial number below. The Valcambi certification mark sits at the bottom. The reverse carries a detailed depiction of the Statue of Liberty with flowing robes and crown, with the word "LIBERTY" at the bottom and the 1985 copyright mark.

The Liberty series is exclusively produced in small sizes (1g through 20g). The broader Credit Suisse bar range, which extends up to 1kg and 10oz in its standard minted and cast formats, does not carry the Liberty reverse design. Some bars from the 1988-2006 period may carry "Credit Suisse First Boston" branding, reflecting the bank's investment banking arm at that time.

Tax Treatment for the Credit Suisse Liberty Bar

The 9999 gold purity exceeds investment gold thresholds in all major jurisdictions. As a bar with no legal tender status, the tax treatment on disposal is governed by capital gains rules rather than the exemptions available to certain government-issued coins.

  • UK: VAT-exempt on purchase (investment gold at 995+ fineness). Subject to CGT on disposal at 18% or 24%, with a £3,000 annual allowance. Not eligible for the CGT exemption that applies to UK legal tender coins.
  • US: Credit Suisse 9999 gold bars from Valcambi (LBMA-accredited) generally meet IRS purity thresholds for self-directed precious metals IRAs. Capital gains taxed at the 28% collectibles rate. State sales tax varies; roughly 35 states exempt bullion.
  • Canada: Eligible for RRSP as 9999 fine gold bars. GST/HST exempt at 99.5%+ purity.
  • Australia: GST-free as investment-grade gold (99.5%+ purity).
  • EU: VAT-exempt under Directive 98/80/EC (investment gold at 995+ fineness).
  • Singapore: GST-exempt under the Investment Precious Metals scheme. Credit Suisse bars are well-recognised by Singapore dealers due to the bank's historical presence in Asia.
  • Hong Kong: No sales tax, no import duty, no capital gains tax.

Credit Suisse Liberty vs Other 1g Gold Bars

The Credit Suisse Liberty competes directly with other Swiss-manufactured 1g gold bars. The PAMP Suisse Fortuna is the most recognised small gold bar globally, with its Lady Fortuna design and Veriscan anti-counterfeiting technology. PAMP bars typically command higher premiums than Credit Suisse equivalents, reflecting both the design popularity and the additional digital verification feature that the Liberty bar lacks.

The 1g Argor-Heraeus Classic bar takes the opposite approach: a deliberately minimalist design with no decorative imagery, keeping production costs and premiums as low as possible. For buyers who view a 1g bar purely as a unit of gold rather than a collectible or gift item, the Classic's understated approach and Argor-Heraeus's LBMA referee status offer strong value.

Against standard Valcambi-branded bars, the Credit Suisse Liberty is an interesting comparison: both come from the same Valcambi factory in Balerna. The Credit Suisse branding has historically commanded a modest premium over Valcambi's own-brand bars. Following the UBS acquisition, this brand premium may shift. If new production under the Credit Suisse name ceases, existing bars could become scarcer and carry a secondary-market premium similar to what discontinued Engelhard bars attract. If production continues under UBS, the premium difference is likely to narrow.

The Liberty design itself is a differentiator for American buyers. The Statue of Liberty motif connects Swiss refining quality with an iconic American symbol, a combination that no other major bar series replicates. For gifting purposes, particularly in the US market, this visual identity gives the Liberty bar more character than a generic refiner bar at the same weight.
