Investment-grade gold bullion is VAT-free in the UK, Canada, Australia, and most of the EU. In the US there is no federal sales tax, though some states apply it to bullion purchases. On resale, capital gains rules vary: UK sellers pay 18% to 24% CGT above the £3,000 annual allowance; US sellers face up to 28% as gold is classed as a collectible; in Canada 50% of the gain is included in taxable income.

For a single 1g bar, options include a home safe (bolted down, fireproof), a bank safe deposit box, or allocated storage at a bullion dealer. Home storage is low-cost but requires adequate insurance. A bank vault suits occasional access. Allocated dealer storage keeps the bar in a professional vault and is practical if you plan to add to your holding over time.
