About the 1 oz Asahi Refining Diwali Gold Bar

A Diwali-Themed Gold Bar from a Major LBMA Refiner

The 1 oz Asahi Refining Diwali Gold Bar combines investment-grade bullion with cultural significance. Produced by Asahi Refining, an LBMA Good Delivery and COMEX-approved refiner, this 999.9 fine gold bar features Lakshmi, the Hindu goddess of wealth and prosperity, on its obverse. The bar is designed specifically for the Diwali gift-giving tradition, where purchasing gold during the festival (and particularly on Dhanteras, the first day of Diwali) is considered auspicious.

Asahi Refining has an unusual corporate lineage. The Japanese parent company, Asahi Holdings, acquired Johnson Matthey's North American and Asian precious metals refining operations in 2015, inheriting facilities and LBMA accreditation from one of the industry's most established names. In 2019, Asahi added Republic Metals Corporation's capacity after acquiring it from bankruptcy. The company now operates refineries in Salt Lake City, Utah and Brampton, Canada, with a precious metals mint in Miami, Florida.

The Diwali series sits in a niche that most Western refiners leave unoccupied. Gold purchases during Diwali represent a significant portion of annual global gold demand, particularly in India and among the South Asian diaspora. Asahi targets this diaspora market with a product that serves both as a cultural gift and a serious investment, backed by full LBMA and COMEX credentials. The bar is available alongside smaller sizes in the same series, including 2.5 gram and 1 gram gold bars, as well as a 1 oz silver variant that features both Lakshmi and Ganesha.

The reverse of the certificate carries the company's quality mark debossed with gold foil, alongside weight and purity details. The bar's finish uses a contrast between frosted and mirror-like surfaces for visual distinction.

The Asahi Diwali series also includes smaller denominations: a 2.5 gram bar (20 x 12.3 mm) and a 1 gram bar (15.2 x 8.7 mm), both at .9999 fine gold. These smaller sizes are popular as gifts rather than pure investment purchases, with the Diwali theme adding cultural significance to a practical format.

Tax Treatment for the Asahi Diwali Gold Bar

At .9999 fine gold, this bar qualifies for investment gold tax exemptions across all major bullion markets. The themed design does not affect its tax classification; the relevant criteria are metal purity and form, not artwork.

United States

The primary market for this bar. State sales tax varies; approximately 35 states fully exempt bullion purchases. Asahi Refining's LBMA Good Delivery and COMEX-approved status means the bar meets the requirements for IRA-eligible precious metals under IRS Section 408(m), which requires gold to be at least 99.5% pure from an accredited refiner. Capital gains are taxed at the 28% federal collectibles rate for holdings over one year.

United Kingdom

Gold bars at 995+ purity are VAT-exempt. The Asahi Diwali bar qualifies. Gold bars are not CGT-exempt (that applies only to UK legal tender coins such as Britannias and Sovereigns). Gains above the annual CGT allowance of GBP 3,000 are taxable at 18% or 24% depending on income. Gold held within a SIPP pension wrapper is sheltered from CGT.

Canada

GST/HST exempt for gold at 99.5%+ purity. Asahi has refining operations in Brampton, Ontario, and the bar is readily available through Canadian dealers.

Singapore and Hong Kong

Singapore exempts gold bars from GST under its Investment Precious Metals scheme (minimum 99.5% purity from qualifying refiners). Hong Kong has no sales tax or capital gains tax on any bullion. Neither jurisdiction taxes capital gains on bullion sales.

Asahi Diwali vs Standard Investment Bars

The Diwali bar's main competitors are standard 1 oz gold bars from major LBMA refiners, since the buyer is choosing between a themed product and a plain investment bar at the same weight and purity.

Against a standard Asahi 1 oz gold bar, the Diwali variant carries a slight premium for the themed design and collector packaging. The metal content is identical. The practical question is whether the cultural significance justifies the markup. For a Diwali gift, the answer is clearly yes; for pure cost-per-ounce investment, a plain bar is more efficient.

PAMP Suisse produces a wider range of themed and cultural bars, including the Lunar calendar series and the Lady Fortuna range. PAMP bars generally command higher premiums than Asahi due to stronger brand recognition, particularly in Asian and Middle Eastern markets. Both refiners hold LBMA Good Delivery accreditation, so the underlying quality assurance is equivalent.

Perth Mint has released Diwali-themed coins (as distinct from bars), which carry legal tender status from the Australian government. For buyers who want legal tender status for tax or regulatory reasons, a coin format may be preferable, though it comes at a higher premium than a bar.

The Asahi Diwali bar's specific positioning is the intersection of LBMA-certified investment grade and South Asian cultural gift-giving. Most Western refiners do not produce Diwali-specific products, leaving this as a relatively uncontested niche backed by serious refining credentials.
