About the 20g UBS Gold Bar

The 20g UBS Gold Bar

This bar contains 20 grams of 999.9 fine gold, equal to 0.6430 troy ounces. The 20 gram weight belongs to the metric, gram-denominated bar series that runs from 1g up to 1 kilo, and it is native to European and Asian markets where gram-denominated gold is the standard rather than troy ounces. In Germany, Switzerland and Austria the 20g size is a popular mid-range choice, and gold souks and Asian bullion dealers stock 20g bars prominently. In the US, Canada and Australia the weight is available but less mainstream, since troy-ounce denominations dominate retail trade there.

The size occupies a useful middle ground on cost. Premiums at 20g typically land between those of 1 oz bars and the 50g and 100g sizes, roughly 4 to 8 percent over spot depending on brand and dealer. That is significantly cheaper per gram than 1g to 5g bars, which can carry premiums of 10 to 40 percent, though still more expensive per gram than 1 oz gold bars and larger sizes.

Bars at this weight are typically supplied in sealed assay cards carrying a serial number, refiner mark and weight and purity certification. The card matters for resale: a bar removed from its original assay packaging may need re-assaying before a dealer will buy it back, while sealed, carded 20g bars from major refiners typically achieve buyback at or near spot. A 20g bar in its card is roughly credit-card sized, so storage takes no real planning.

At 999.9 fine, the bar comfortably clears the 995 threshold that defines investment gold in the UK and EU and the 99.5 percent floor used by Canada, Australia and the US IRA rules. All major Swiss and German refiners produce bars at the 20 gram weight, and the standard presentation is a sealed assay card certifying the serial number, weight and purity.

For scale, at gold prices around $3,300 per troy ounce in 2026 a 20g bar represents roughly $2,100 of metal, a meaningful but accessible purchase that sits close to the half-ounce budget bracket while containing about 29 percent more gold than a 1/2 oz piece.

Tax Treatment of the 20g UBS Gold Bar

At 999.9 fine, this bar qualifies as investment gold in every major jurisdiction that uses a purity test.

  • UK: 0% VAT, since bars of 995+ fineness count as investment gold. Bars are not CGT-exempt, however; that exemption is reserved for UK legal tender coins. Gains above the £3,000 annual allowance are taxed at 10 or 20 percent depending on your income band.
  • EU: 0% VAT across all member states under the Investment Gold Directive, which covers gold bars of 995+ fineness.
  • US: No federal sales tax; state treatment varies, with around 35 states exempting bullion and a handful applying thresholds such as $1,000 in New York or $2,000 in California. Long-term gains are taxed at the 28 percent collectibles rate. The bar meets the 99.5 percent IRA purity floor, but IRA eligibility also requires an accredited refiner and storage with an approved custodian.
  • Canada: 0% GST/HST, as the bar exceeds 99.5 percent purity.
  • Australia and New Zealand: 0% GST for investment-grade gold of 99.5 percent purity or better.
  • Singapore and Hong Kong: No GST under Singapore's Investment Precious Metals scheme, and no sales tax of any kind in Hong Kong. Neither levies capital gains tax.

20g Bars vs Half-Ounce Coins and Other 20g Bars

The closest decision most buyers face at this budget is between a 20g bar and a 1/2 oz coin. The gold content is not the same: 20 grams equals 0.643 troy ounces, so the bar holds about 29 percent more metal than a half-ounce coin. Metric bars also tend to be priced more keenly, with gram-denominated bars from the big Swiss refiners typically carrying lower premiums than sovereign mint half-ounce coins. The choice often comes down to regional habit: metric markets favour grams, troy markets favour fractional ounces, and resale is smoothest where the denomination is familiar.

Within the 20g weight itself, the 20g PAMP Suisse Fortuna is the most recognised option globally, though its famous design carries a slight brand premium. Valcambi 20g bars are often the lowest-premium choice from a Swiss refiner, Argor-Heraeus offers its Kinebar with a holographic security feature, and the Valcambi CombiBar splits the 20 grams into break-off segments for divisibility at a higher premium. Heraeus and Umicore also produce LBMA-accredited bars at this weight, and Perth Mint sells a 20g bar in CertiCard packaging aimed at Australian and Asian buyers.

Stepping up to a 1 oz bar buys a lower premium per gram and stronger liquidity in North America and Australia, where the troy ounce is the default trading unit. The 20g size wins where budget, gifting convention or a metric home market makes the gram denomination the natural fit.
