About the 3g PAMP Suisse Gold Bar
The 3g PAMP Suisse Gold Bar
The 3g PAMP Suisse gold bar packs 0.0965 troy ounces of .9999 fine gold into a sealed assay card from one of the world's most credentialled refiners. Three grams is an uncommon bar weight; most refiners concentrate on 1g, 5g, and 10g, so the 3g format from PAMP and Valcambi serves a niche between micro-bars and the standard 5g entry size. The closest reference points are the 3g Chinese Gold Panda coin and the 1/10 troy oz (3.11g) fractional coins from Western mints.
What you are paying for, beyond the metal, is the PAMP name. PAMP, short for Produits Artistiques Métaux Précieux, is an LBMA-accredited Good Delivery refiner for gold and silver and has been an LBMA Approved Referee since December 2003, one of only three refiners worldwide holding both LBMA and LPPM Referee status. It was the first precious metals brand to put artistic designs on the reverse of minted bars, with the flagship Lady Fortuna motif depicting the Roman goddess of fortune with cornucopia, sheaves of wheat, poppies, and wheel of fortune. The CertiPAMP blister packaging carries a QR code, an independent Swiss Federal Assayer signature, and an individual serial number, and Veriscan technology (introduced 2015) lets the bar's microscopic surface topography be verified as a unique fingerprint via a phone app.
Small bars are premium-heavy by nature: fixed manufacturing costs spread across very little gold. Buyers at this size are typically cost-averaging in small increments or gifting; anyone optimising premium per gram should look at 10g and larger sizes instead.

PAMP's minted bar range runs from 0.3g to 1,000g across many denominations, and the 3g sits near the small end of it. The hallmarking carries weight in the trade: PAMP has used its "Essayeur Fondeur" certification mark since 1980 and its official stamp on gold bars since 1982, holds Swiss Melter License No. 89 under the Precious Metals Control Act, and its bars have been accepted by the Swiss National Bank under LBMA Good Delivery accreditation since 1986. It is the only Swiss refinery simultaneously holding ISO 9001, ISO 14001, ISO 17025, ISO 45001, and SA 8000 certifications.
Authentication layers on a modern PAMP minted bar include the CertiPAMP card's QR code and assayer signature, the individual serial number, and Veriscan, whose underlying AlpVision technology received LBMA Gold Bar Integrity programme Security Feature accreditation in 2023. At this size the assay card matters doubly: a 3g bar is physically tiny and easy to mislay loose, and breaking the seal can mean re-verification and a weaker buyback offer. Keep it sealed and stored flat.
Tax on a 3g Investment Gold Bar
At .9999 fine the bar exceeds every investment-gold purity threshold, so it buys tax-free in most of the world. The small size does introduce one US-specific wrinkle around state thresholds.
- United Kingdom: VAT-exempt as investment gold (995+ purity). Bars are not CGT-exempt, but at 3g of gold per bar, gains are unlikely to trouble the £3,000 annual CGT allowance unless held in quantity.
- EU: 0% VAT on investment gold bars of 995+ purity across all member states.
- United States: no federal sales tax; most states exempt bullion outright. The threshold states cut the other way for small bars: California only exempts transactions over $2,000, and New York, Massachusetts, and Louisiana over $1,000, so a single 3g bar bought on its own can be taxable in those states while a larger order is exempt. Long-term gains are taxed at the collectibles rate of up to 28%. PAMP bars meet the IRA purity and accredited-refiner requirements, though gram-scale bars are an unusual IRA choice.
- Canada: GST/HST-exempt at 99.5%+ purity.
- Australia and New Zealand: GST-free at 99.5%+ purity.
- Singapore: 0% GST under the Investment Precious Metals scheme, which covers gold of 99.5%+ purity from LBMA-accredited refiners; no capital gains tax.
- Hong Kong: no sales tax, no import duty, no capital gains tax.
PAMP: From Ticino Workshop to Global Refiner
PAMP SA was incorporated in 1977 in Castel San Pietro, in the Swiss canton of Ticino near the Italian border, geographically close to fellow refiners Valcambi and Argor-Heraeus. Its early business was manufacturing small minted gold bars sold primarily to Middle East markets, which makes a gram-scale bar like this one a direct descendant of the company's original product line. In 1981 MKS (Switzerland) SA, the Geneva trading house founded in 1979 by Iraqi-born gold trader Mahmoud Kassem Shakarchi, acquired a majority shareholding in PAMP. After Shakarchi's death in 1983, his daughter Karma and son Marwan took over and led expansion into Asia and globally.
The accreditations accumulated steadily: LBMA and LPPM accreditation as a trader in 1987, COMEX trading from 1989, TOCOM in 1990, appointment as an LBMA Approved Referee on 17 December 2003, LPPM membership for platinum and palladium in 2007, and Shanghai Gold Exchange membership in 2014. The 2008 MMTC-PAMP joint venture with the Government of India's MMTC created India's largest gold refiner and the country's only LBMA-accredited Good Delivery refinery. On 30 November 2021, MKS and PAMP merged into MKS PAMP SA, with PAMP retained as the product brand.
On the product side, PAMP introduced artistic reverse designs to minted bars, with Lady Fortuna becoming the flagship motif, developed the CertiPAMP assay-card blister packaging in the 1990s, and launched Veriscan surface-fingerprint authentication in 2015. Wholesale clients include the US Mint, Royal Canadian Mint, Royal Mint, and Austrian Mint, and Harrods offers PAMP minted products at its in-store bank in London.
3g PAMP Bar vs Gold Panda, 1/10 oz Coins, and Other Small Bars
The dominant product at exactly this weight is the 3g Chinese Gold Panda, which replaced the 1/10 oz Panda denomination in 2016 during China's metric conversion. The Panda is .999 fine with an annually changing design that gives it collector appeal, and typically trades at 10-20% over spot. The PAMP bar counters with higher .9999 purity, sealed CertiPAMP packaging, and Veriscan verification, without the year-to-year design variable.
The other natural comparison is the 1/10 troy oz coin (3.11g) from Western mints: the 1/10 oz gold Britannia, Eagle, Maple Leaf, or Krugerrand. These carry 0.11g more gold and have wider recognition at general-purpose coin shops, which matters for quick resale; the 3g metric weight is less familiar in troy-ounce markets. For UK buyers the fractional Britannia adds CGT exemption that no bar can offer. European buyers at this price point more commonly choose 1/10 oz Britannias or Philharmonics over 3g products.
Within bars, Valcambi also produces a 3g bar, though the weight is less common than 1g, 5g, or 10g from either refiner. The economics of small gold apply across all of them: manufacturing costs are similar per unit regardless of size, so percentage premiums at 3g are steep and buyback spreads are wider than for larger denominations. Treat the 3g format as a gifting and small-increment accumulation tool; for premium efficiency, the step up to 10g and beyond is where costs start to fall meaningfully.
