About the Buddha Gold

PAMP Suisse Buddha Gold Bars

The Buddha bar is part of PAMP Suisse's Faith series, a collection of five designs celebrating major world religions through minted gold bars. Each design in the series represents a different tradition: Buddhism (Buddha), Christianity (Romanesque Cross), Islam (Ka'bah), Hinduism (Lakshmi), and Judaism (Am Yisrael Chai). The Buddha bar depicts Siddhartha Gautama seated in the lotus position with rays of enlightenment radiating outward, drawn from classical Theravada and Mahayana artistic traditions.

PAMP (Produits Artistiques Metaux Precieux) produces these bars at their refinery in Castel San Pietro, Ticino, Switzerland. The refinery holds LBMA Good Delivery accreditation and is accredited by the Swiss National Bank. Every Buddha bar is struck in .9999 fine gold, individually serial-numbered, and sealed in a tamper-evident CertiPAMP assay card that certifies weight, purity, and authenticity. Removing a bar from its sealed packaging can reduce resale value, as dealers prefer bars in their original assay cards for authentication.

The Faith series is one of the few bullion product lines to systematically represent multiple world religions, which makes these bars popular as culturally meaningful gifts. Gold sizes available include 5g, 10g, and 1 oz bars. A separate "Lucky Buddha" design also exists from PAMP, depicting the laughing Budai figure rather than the historical Siddhartha Gautama. The two are distinct products and should not be confused.

All gold Buddha bars share the same design elements. The obverse shows the seated Buddha in the lotus position (padmasana) with radiating rays of knowledge. The reverse carries the standard PAMP Suisse layout shared across the Faith series: the circular PAMP logo, weight and purity marking, the "ESSAYEUR FONDEUR" Swiss refiner's designation, and a unique serial number. "Essayeur Fondeur" is a legally controlled Swiss title indicating production by a registered precious metals refiner.

Each bar ships in a CertiPAMP assay card with a tamper-evident seal. The assay certificate, signed by a certified assayer, verifies weight, purity, and gold content, and the serial number printed on the card matches the one laser-engraved on the bar. The design has remained consistent since the series launch, with no annual variations or year-specific editions. The seated Buddha with radiating rays is one of the most visually striking PAMP bar designs and appears frequently in collector forums and bullion review sites.

Tax Treatment for PAMP Buddha Gold Bars

As refinery-produced gold bars, the Buddha bars are not legal tender in any jurisdiction. They carry no face value. Tax treatment depends entirely on metal type, purity, and the buyer's country of residence.

Purchase Tax

  • United Kingdom: VAT-exempt. Gold bars at .995+ purity qualify as investment gold under HMRC rules. No VAT on purchase.
  • European Union: VAT-exempt under EU Investment Gold Directive 98/80/EC. Gold bars of .995+ fineness are classified as investment gold across all member states.
  • United States: No federal sales tax. State-level treatment varies, with roughly 35 states fully exempting bullion. See the state-by-state breakdown for specifics.
  • Canada: GST/HST exempt. Gold bullion of .995+ purity is classified as a financial instrument under the Excise Tax Act.
  • Australia: GST-free. Gold at .995+ purity in bar form qualifies as investment-grade precious metal.
  • Singapore: GST-exempt under the Investment Precious Metals (IPM) scheme for gold bars of .995+ purity and at least 0.5 troy ounce.
  • Hong Kong: No sales tax, no import duty, no VAT of any kind.

Capital Gains and Resale

In the United Kingdom, gold bars are subject to Capital Gains Tax on disposal, regardless of purity or origin. Only UK legal tender coins (such as the Britannia and Sovereign) are CGT-exempt. The annual CGT allowance of £3,000 applies. PAMP bars do qualify as SIPP-eligible gold, allowing tax-deferred holding within a UK pension wrapper.

In the United States, physical gold is classified as a collectible by the IRS and taxed at a maximum long-term rate of 28%, higher than the standard 15-20% rate for equities. The .9999 purity exceeds the .995 minimum for IRA eligibility, and PAMP bars are widely accepted by IRA custodians for tax-advantaged retirement accounts.

Singapore and Hong Kong impose no capital gains tax on bullion. In Canada, 50% of capital gains are included in taxable income (rising to 66.67% for annual gains above CAD 250,000).

Buddha Bars vs Other PAMP Designs and Competitors

The most direct comparison is with PAMP's own Lady Fortuna, their flagship bar design since 1977. The Fortuna is PAMP's most widely recognised and liquid product, available in sizes from 1g to 10oz. The Buddha bar carries similar premiums but is more niche. On resale, Fortuna bars benefit from higher recognition and tighter dealer spreads. The Buddha bar's appeal is more specific: buyers who want a culturally meaningful design, particularly for gifting within Buddhist communities.

Against other religion-themed bullion, the Faith series stands alone in its breadth. Scottsdale Mint produces Christian-themed silver bars and rounds, but nothing comparable in gold or in multi-faith scope. Various private mints produce Buddhist or spiritual-themed rounds, but these lack LBMA backing and the assay certification that PAMP provides. The premium gap between PAMP and generic private-mint bars reflects the Swiss refinery's quality standards and brand recognition.

Compared to standard gold bars from Swiss competitors like Valcambi or Argor-Heraeus, the Buddha bar carries a modest design premium. A plain Valcambi 1oz bar or Argor-Heraeus 1oz bar will typically trade at a lower premium over spot, since the manufacturing cost is lower without the detailed artistic design. For buyers whose priority is minimising cost per ounce of gold, a plain bar from any LBMA-accredited refiner achieves the same investment outcome. The Buddha bar's additional premium buys the Faith series design and the gifting/collectible angle.

The Good Luck Yellow Dragon, another PAMP design, competes in the culturally themed gifting segment. The Yellow Dragon targets Chinese cultural contexts specifically, with its red CertiPAMP card and dragon motif. The Buddha bar has broader appeal across Buddhist traditions in Southeast Asia, East Asia, and Western convert communities. Both carry .9999 purity and identical assay packaging.
