The 1/4 oz Bison Gold Coin is a fractional denomination in the Royal Canadian Mint's Bison bullion programme. The series launched in 2015 with annual bison reverse designs by RCM staff artists. Security Features

The Bison gold coin shares the RCM's full security suite, which was extended across bullion products from 2016:

• Radial lines: Precisely machined lines visible on both obverse and reverse, producing a light-diffracting pattern that is extremely difficult to replicate. These lines are machine-cut with tolerances measured in microns.
• Micro-laser engraved privy mark: A tiny maple leaf in the reverse field containing the last two digits of the year, visible only under magnification. This mark provides immediate vintage identification.
• Bullion DNA: The RCM's proprietary authentication system, allowing verification at authorised dealers with specialised readers. Each coin is digitally fingerprinted during production.

The 2015 debut year did not include the radial lines or maple leaf privy mark. These features were added from 2016 when the technology was extended beyond the Maple Leaf programme. Canada

Gold bullion coins issued by the RCM are exempt from GST/HST under the Excise Tax Act when meeting investment criteria. The Bison qualifies as RCM-produced legal tender gold of .999+ purity. Capital gains are taxable at the 50% inclusion rate (increasing to 66.67% for gains above CAD $250,000 annually from June 2024).

United States

The .9999 purity exceeds the IRS 99.5% threshold for IRA eligibility. State sales tax exemptions apply in most states that exempt precious metals bullion. Federal capital gains are taxed at the collectibles rate of up to 28%.

United Kingdom
