The 1 oz Klondike Gold Rush coin is refined to .99999 purity, five nines, the highest achievable fineness in gold refining. Produced by the Royal Canadian Mint, this is one of very few bullion products in the world struck at this extreme purity level. The additional nine of purity over the standard .9999 used by the 1oz Gold Maple Leaf represents a significant refining achievement, though the actual difference in gold content per ounce is less than 0.01 grams.

The series launched in 2021 to commemorate the 125th anniversary of the Klondike Gold Rush (1896-1899), when an estimated 100,000 prospectors travelled to the Yukon in search of gold. Each year's reverse design depicts a different stage in the gold rush journey, painted by artist Steve Hepburn: Panning for Gold (2021), Prospecting for Gold (2022), Passage for Gold (2023), and From Dore to Refined Gold (2024). The series tells a chronological story, tracing gold's journey "from pan to coin," a fitting narrative for a coin that is itself the product of extraordinary refining precision.

With a face value of 200 CAD, the Klondike Gold Rush carries the highest face value of any 1 oz gold bullion coin in the world. It is Canadian legal tender, and the bullion version has no fixed mintage limit, though production volumes are far lower than the standard Maple Leaf. The coin established the market for five-nines gold bullion. Before this series, the Royal Canadian Mint's five-nines gold was available only in limited collector editions, including the famous 2007 $1 million Gold Maple Leaf.

The Klondike series is the spiritual predecessor to the RCM's "Our Purest" branding launched in 2025, which continues the five-nines tradition with lower mintages and premium packaging.

Precise radial lines in the background provide visual complexity that is difficult to replicate. A laser micro-engraved maple leaf contains the year numeral (visible only under magnification). Canada

As Canadian legal tender at 99.5%+ purity, the Klondike Gold Rush is GST/HST exempt. The coin qualifies for the federal precious metals exemption that applies to gold in bar, ingot, coin, or wafer form at 99.5% purity or above. Capital gains from disposal are taxable at the 50% inclusion rate (50% of the gain is added to income and taxed at the marginal rate).

The coin is also eligible for RRSP (Registered Retirement Savings Plan) and TFSA (Tax-Free Savings Account) accounts, provided it is held through an approved custodian. United States

The coin is IRA-eligible as a product of a sovereign government mint exceeding the 99.5% purity threshold. No federal sales tax applies, and over 35 states exempt precious metals from state sales tax. The Klondike Gold Rush also has cultural significance for American buyers, as Skagway, Alaska was the primary departure point for the gold rush. Long-term capital gains are taxed at the collectibles rate of up to 28%.

United Kingdom

VAT-free as investment gold (gold coin of 900+ fineness that is or was legal tender). Not CGT-exempt in the UK, as only UK Royal Mint legal tender qualifies for CGT exemption. Gains are subject to CGT at the individual's rate (18% basic, 24% higher), with the annual 3,000 GBP allowance.

European Union
